Hmm... People had quite a bit to say over the last few days... Oddly quiet in here after a great game where he factored heavily into every goal scored, with a goal and 2 primary assists.
It's funny, you saw exactly what frustrates people with Marner and what excites them in the same game.

He made the best plays of the night and the worst.

The way he took that pass on the Jumbo goal was a thing of beauty

Marner is capable of putting nights up like this. He just needs to be more consistent. Until then, even after a game like last night, he’s still not worth 11 million.

I mean...the guy is the 2nd or 3rd highest paid winger in hockey, this is what those guys do.

Do you think Panarin, Kucherov or Kane don't routinely do this kind of stuff?

I feel dumber for reading just this page of the thread. I don't think I can even go back and read the previous 15 pages of drivel.
K...

Anyway, Leaf fans had every right to criticize Marner after his Friday performance. He wasn't good. It's funny commenting now after he has a good game when you're no where to be found defending him during his bad ones. Let's just hope he keeps this recent performance going and go from there.

I don't feel the need to defend him after Friday's game as I can't go up and down like a yoyo with every game. 90% of the Leafs were horrible on Friday night.

A player like Kucherov does do this stuff, though not as "routinely" as you think, and unlike Marner, it took until his prime, and unlike Marner, he gets praised and appreciated for being able to do this stuff, and unlike Marner, he doesn't get absolutely dumped on for every perceived "mistake" he ever makes.

Who of the hockey fans in Tampa are going to bitch about a player on a team friendly deal that helped carry their team to a SC and might help them repeat? IMO Mitch did himself no favours with his contract negotiations so he is going to hear it from fustrated Leaf fans when he and the team lay an egg. Keep playing like he did last night and most of the Marner haters won't have a platform to stand on. Same is true for Willie, JT and Matty but to a lesser degree.

By the time Marners contract is done, it is quite possible he overtakes George Armstrong as the highest point winger the leafs have EVER had on their team. This would put him in the top 5 players of all time on the team. It is amazing people think he is easily replaceable.

Most big criticisms are not really based anything concrete. He has flaws as all players do but arguments that he should have been paid 8 to 8.5 million on an 8 year deal dont really add a lot. What is clear is that the team wins when he plays well and often lose when he doesnt. This is a real correlation vs causation.

I liked some of the defensive plays Marner was making last night but he had that awful blunder at the end of the game that thankfully didn't cost the Leafs.

While we all obviously want a Cup, sometimes I think people miss out on the fact we have 3 guys on the roster who could surpass many all time club records, if here a while. Frustrating as it can be at times, at least enjoy that.

I would say more than 3. The lines need to find some stability to maximize chemistry. Potential is huge because these boys are on the beginning edges of their prime.

Sure is a good thing they didn't trade Kucherov when he was putting up point paces in the 60s at the same point in development that Marner's been putting up 90s.

Sure is a good thing they didn't trade Kucherov after he followed up a great season with a bad playoffs, with 2 assists, a game misconduct, and a suspension as his team got swept.

Sure is a good thing they didn't trade Kucherov every time he had a bad or average game (which is plenty), or every time he attempted something that wasn't the "old school hockey" way (which is plenty).

Unfortunately, not having a platform to stand on has never stopped it before. One would think seeing a player that is stylistically similar to Marner "help carry their team to a Cup" would help people appreciate him a bit more, but unfortunately, for some, nothing he could ever do would be enough.

He needs to be taken off the pk. He adds little value if any. Let the plugs do the dirty work. Conserve his energy for double shifting on 5 vs 5. He’s one blocked shot in the ankle / foot away from the IR list

Marner just surpassed JVR for total career points as a leaf. With some luck this year, he will push past 13 more leaf alumni and will pass Kadri.
He will probably do it in 2/3 the number of games played as well . He already cracked the all time top 10 for single season points and top 5 for single season assists but who needs him eh ?

Yup. There is a reason for that.
And if you’re looking for things to slag on a guy, your chances improve when he’s on the ice all the time.

I haven’t really read the Marner threads last few months, but a quick peruse looks like the borg mentality around here has worsened, he’s a piñata. I also note the very positive opinions of him in other mediums remains strong, they get the kid and his game. This place is Fox News sometimes.

Marner had a very strong Game 2 against Ottawa and needs to keep that motor running to be a consistent impact every shift. I don't think he's ever had problems compiling points but what we need is that relentlessness. Tim Stuetzle reminded me a little bit of that rookie Marner motor that was absent last year.

Money Mitch still looking like himself from last year.

He apparently worked on his shot this off season but I haven't seen any improvement except for that one goal in a scrimmage.

Why did this man have to be so greedy?
Pure gold.
