Re: Gibson. If Anaheim retains some money (maybe $1-2m) I think acquiring him for 2-3 years then trading him could be the best way to go.

Hard to think Gibson at $4.6 - 5.6m would have 0 value, even then. If he really stinks it up we could retain some on a trade for the last year or so of the deal. Not ideal, but wouldn’t be a killer.

All depends on what Anaheims ask for him is I suppose.

Also, this was interesting from Mike McKenna about UPL, I asked this to him a few months ago:

I still think the most likely scenario is that Adams doesn't get a goalie and we run 13/7/3 out of camp with the idea being that UPL/Comrie/Levi split games evenly until one either proves better than the others OR one proves worse than the others.
think there are to many D men .... 13/8/2 ?

EF said Verbeek is asking a lot for Gibson and Gibson said today that while he wants a trade, he is not expecting one.

Between Verbeek wanting a lot, Gibson having a 10 team NTC, and cap space being tight, it seems unlikely that he moves.

UPL and Mitts for Helly I just read on the main forum as a proposal.

I think that's a winner

Yes, and that's exactly how Montreal made the playoffs many of those years, their team sucked but they had Carey Price. I'm not sure that's what we should be aiming for.

No one wanted anything to do with Adin Hill a year ago, but now he's considered a legit nhl goalie. I find it interesting that Vegas ranks at the top of the league in many of these team metrics.

Our team would be far better in front of the goalie than were those Montreal teams.

Levi merely played like an average NHL goalie when he was up here. It's just that average NHL level goaltending was far better than UPL and light years ahead of Comrie

Except Granato showed last year he is not going to play Comrie unless he absolutely has to. He showed that down the stretch. When Levi needed a night off, it was UPL who got the start. That was very telling

Our team gave up the 6th most xGoals in the entire league, we might score more than those Habs teams, but we defend infinitely worse.

Also, Levi put up top 15 metrics with terrible team defense in front of him. I don't think there was anything average about his performance. I'm also not banking on him, or anyone else, being able to perform well in that environment over a much longer sample size of games. Hence my point from earlier, you need prime Carey Price to be able to put up average goalie numbers with our defense.

I don't know, those Montreal teams did not have stacked bluelines by any means, but Carbonneau, Jacques Martin, and later even Therrien made the most of a lot of recycled vets, and their teams played a whole lot tighter than what is happening currently in Buffalo.

They weren't flashy on paper outside of Markov and later Suban, but they brought in solid vets that were past their primes, yet were still somewhat defensively competent like Hamrlik, Komisarek, Kaberle, Hal Gill, etc, and their systems were much tighter than how Granato has the Sabres playing if I am remembering things correctly. Those Habs teams would collapse down and give up a lot of shots, but the defensive zone coverage and elimination of secondary chances on rebounds and such was better (except for maybe when Brisebois was on the ice ; )

I still don't think Levi should start the year in Buffalo, and should need to force his way up from the ahl. We've been patient with the goaltending issue so far, what is a few extra months? I don't see how starting a 22yo rookie in an NHL crease is a good idea for his development, but I seem to be in the minority on this one.

Maybe they'll decide who should be in Buffalo after training camp and preseason games. In any case, I think we need good goalie in tandem with Levi or UPL/Comrie if Levi starts in Rochester. I doubt that they will go into the season with three goalies, because no one does and it is inefficient.

My guess is that they waive Comrie at the end of camp and they roll with Levi & UPL.
Then the signing of Tokarski confuses me, he is clearly not number 4, and for some reason they signed Cooley.

Depth.

2022-23 - 4 goalies played games
2021-22 - 6 goalies played games
2020-21 - 6 goalies played games
Well, quality is more important than quantity.

Tokarski as an organizational 4th goalie is not quality for that slot?
No, that's not what I meant. I think he's even third goaltender and starter in Rochester than fourth. I meant that over the years we have had a lot of bad goalies.

~15 is the definition of an average NHL starter

It's also all we really need to win

Q: As you watched the playoffs, how were you processing it this year having been just one point away?

It was a lot, obviously. Our players, knowing where we were at the end of the year, you’re thinking about, how are they taking things? It’s all about preparation for next year. Starting from day one. You have the offseason, so you’re thinking about how our players felt during the exit meetings, which were great. It seemed like guys if they watched the playoffs would be able to say, ‘Ok, we’re getting ready for this.’ I thought there was a lot to learn for every team in the league. There is no Stanley Cup Winner for 2024 yet, so every team is trying to find ways to get better. If you watched this year’s playoffs, you see a team like Florida do what they did, knocking off Boston to start and really reeling it in and playing to their identity. We grew into that, playing with an identity toward the end of the year, especially the last 10 games where the pressure was on and it was must-win situations. I think our players felt that we did play to an identity and we need to come in and work on that right away at the start of the year. To get back to the playoffs, some other things when you reflect, I listen to the radio on the way in this morning and they’re talking about goaltending with concern in relation to July 1 and that sort of thing. I’m thinking if you stop and look at organizations specifically at that position, Adin Hill didn’t even start at the start of the playoffs. Vegas now looked at it with all of this information and said we have to re-sign this guy. But at the start of the playoffs, they didn’t even have him in the net. Here’s a guy in their own organization and they didn’t even know how good he was because they played the other guy at the start.

Q: Bobrovsky didn’t even start the playoffs because Alex Lyon was on a roll.

The last three years since they’ve signed Bobrovsky to a $10 million deal, they’ve found ways to not like him. That’s my interpretation. And they start the other guy and in the fourth game of the Boston series they go to him and he doesn’t come out of the net. I hear some of the stuff about our goaltending and you look at some of that stuff, it’s not unnatural to be worried about this. Every other team is worried about it. At the end of the day, you know, our approach to it and my approach is, ‘Stick with the guys.’ We know these young guys are going to have situations and grow from it. I’m getting off topic a little, but it’s all of these things that go through your head as you think about next season.

The Sabres like their goalies more than the fans and media do.

I loved the Granato interview but I tend to like what he has to say normally. Granato + Fairburn is a great combo. Very excited for next season!
