Like you can't Google it.....I can't remember who won the cup 5 years ago or what state they represent. I'm sure they have that hometown pride and feel like winners, but I don't care. Only know it wasn't my team.
Man it's bad enough he tried this in Phoenix with an actual NHL team, trying to grift a smaller city is even more slimy.

Vintage asshatery!Strictly my opinion here.....
It started with Glendale when he came in all hard core at the city manager over negotiating a multi-year lease. Glendale terminating the original lease five years earlier didn't help and he was probably aware of that. Also knew the league's view of the city after that happened and figured that was a leverage point for him.
Couple that with what he had done to date with the political class in California and Nevada for years he probably figured Arizona was just like them..... and they simply aren't.
As much as Arizona cities take political jabs at each other, they will always circle the wagons with each other when it comes to someone coming from the outside looking to fight.
Gubmimt mint isn’t business, gubmint are takers, that produce nil.Like Glendale terminating the lease with IceArizona after fooling their outgoing city attorney into believing he could immediately go to work for them, thus violating state laws??
Not exactly limited to Glendale either....my previous post above hinting Meruelo could have not been the reason TED failed was somewhat true.
Attorney general: Tempe violated open meetings law on Coyotes' political contract
State investigators determined that Tempe violated Arizona's Open Meeting Law but did not improperly use public funds to skew an election.www.azcentral.com
Tempe claims they were completely innocent, but from technical point they weren't.
The fallout of this, had TED passed, could have (and probably WOULD have) been even a bigger shitshow.
They claim Vegas and Utah are going to be making an effort to grow youth hockey in the valley, I suspect that's more wishful thinking than insider info. Sure there might be recruitment clinics like the Vegas stuff but actually trying to actively grow youth hockey in the valley...yeah I highly doubt that.Well rounded article..

That's what I mean though, they're not going to give two f***s about youth hockey in AZ let alone foot a tangible part of the bill for it. Their concern is recruiting fans and they're going to do it via marketing, pep rallies, and crap like that. They just want people buying merchandise, they don't care about youth hockey in AZ.Vegas will do it because they had to give up Utah as a territory to recruit new fans from.
Utah knows there will be fans who will follow the team and would like to keep that going. What's delaying them is they spent the last six months just trying to get the franchise up and running (Smith initially was using his Jazz staff at first until he could get a hockey business staff assembled) and they just established the UHC Foundation to get new programs started in their own state.
So right now Vegas has the advantage of having the infrastructure already in place (just by moving the programs they had started from Utah to Arizona) and Utah is just beginning to catch up.
What do you expect them to do? Full blown hockey programs? Those were killed by Alex Meruelo when the Coyotes left town. That's what I mean though, they're not going to give two f***s about youth hockey in AZ let alone foot a tangible part of the bill for it. I hope I eat crow here but I highly doubt I will.
I'm not expecting them to do anything, them not caring about youth hockey in AZ is literally my point. What do you expect them to do? Full blown hockey programs? Those were killed by Alex Meruelo when the Coyotes left town.
You can't expect VGK or Utah to just fill that gap entirely but hosting hockey clinics that are FREE help and are certainly better than nothing. They're still trying to grow the game in their City. Even as a VGK fan in AZ I understand that they aren't playing for me.. I've chosen to follow THEM and appreciate the gesture. Something they really didn't have to do.
Hopefully Lindsay Fry and crew continue doing what they're doing but they're also control freaks and don't want outsiders on their territory.
