2 wins away from the Stanley cup final and you categorize that as “barely got past half” the amount of wins needed to win the cup. I usually agree with your takes, but that’s a bad spin on it.

Is it though? We really shouldn't have won either of the first 2 series, and we got stomped by Tampa after game 2. The only reason we got as far as we did was Igor going on a streak at the right time

Don't be worried. The annual dreaded offer sheet against the NYR never happens. Many years we see a Larry offer sheet article but in reality you will see a ET before an offer sheet.
The thing people forget about offer sheets is it isnt just another team sending out the offer with the player not knowing anything about it, blindsiding the team you are trying to poach.

The player and agent is approached, they have to consider the offer and sign it, knowing that if they do it they could be leaving the city/team to go elsewhere. And if the offer is matched the player and GM have to live with the fact that the player wanted to leave.

Yes, its a business, but it wouldnt be a great impression if Laf signed a sheet to get 1-1.5 more million in that scenario for the 2nd rounder compensation. It would likely be for much more and that level of an offer would be a risk given Lafs performance in the league thus far.

Could easily say we were 63% of the way to a CUP WIN... literally 6 wins from hoisting it...
Only two teams got closer, right?

Laughing at “loads up on vets at the TDL” like it’s some shocking thing
Most playoff bound teams load up on vet players to shore up holes in their team. That’s not a bad move as long as you don’t completely sell your farm and picks to do it, and Drury hasn’t done that yet
Holes in the top 6? Besides us, name other healthy playoff bound teams that acquire 2 players for their top 6 in back to back deadlines.

Laf and Kakko had shots at the top 6 early last year. But when the results were underwhelming, they found themselves back together on the 3rd line, while the team went out to acquire other players to fill openings in the top 6. And I'm supposed to believe that this year will be different and we'll have patience for these guys in the top 6 if they struggle? Yea ok...

And regarding farm and picks...every ranking I've seen has us in the bottom 1/3 of the league...and we just got done with a draft where we had 2 picks in the first 4 rounds.

I mean in back to back years we gave up firsts.

We overachieved, still had to go to two game 7s against backup goalies with teams missing star players, then ran out of gas halfway through the conference final. This was in a year that everything pointed to us being a run of the mill team with a hot goalie. And we didn't even get to the Cup Finals. We barely got past half the required number of wins to be Champs, really.

By all signs including our subsequent campaign, that Conference finals run should be read as an outlier. At least under Gallant. Obviously if Laviolette has them come in and play differently and they all of a sudden turn into a 5v5 juggernaut then we can amend projections.

But it should have been clear to all that giving up firsts was a bad idea.
The Copp and Kane ones were conditional though so we can't say no chance if the conditions were reached. I myself would make the condition reaching the finals but that probably wasn't on the table.

They just filled some obvious needs with short term low cost vet signings already like Wheeler, Gus, Pitlick, Bonino, etc. I doubt they acquire as many guys at the deadline as they have done the last 2 years.

Well it's mathematically 62%. Not even 2/3rds of the way.

I think the point that needs to be absorbed by the board at large is that getting beat 4-2 in the Conference Finals isn't as close as everyone thinks it is. Once Tampa got their feet we were summarily dispatched and we would have been run off the ice by Colorado.

Then they should have turned down the trade and done without.

63% is barely more than half.

Yea and? 3 teams won as many as 10 playoff games last year and this year. As long as we are throwing percentages out there, that's 9% of the league. It's still an accomplishment.

The last 40% is the hardest.

1 first, the 29th overall pick....

This is a pretty insane post...

"The Rangers shouldn't have tried to make their team better or gear up for a playoff run because their play 5on5 isn't great'
You always should try to make your team better. It’s throwing away assets on lost causes that’s the problem.

Actually it’s 62.5% which rounds to 63. 63 is 26% more than 50. “Barely” huh?
I think YOU need to accept that being 6 wins away from hoisting the cup is nowhere near “no chance of winning”…

Isn’t a goalie part of the team? So why denigrate the team because one player was able to carry them far?

It’s such a stupid way to shit on a team because their goalie played great (which was not necessarily true against Pittsburgh).

“The only reason…..”. Such a shallow and silly way to knock the accomplishment

How quickly people forget that we were up 2-0 in game three before the series police decided to step in and/or Trouba did a dumb Trouba thing. The Cup was very available for the taking that year.

This year too. We beat NJ easily with a coach that had any sense of flexibility to adjust to Schmid. They won the first two games 5-1 FFS.

The Rangers are a good team.

It's more than halfway between half and three-quarters.

Available for the taking for the Avs. Lol. If somehow we managed to not shit the bed in that series, the Avs would've steamrolled us. As for last year, not sure we were beating anyone with our shit 5v5 play and a PP that went to sleep after Game 2, Round 1.

The only thing the regular season is good for is placement. Once there, how good of a team you were in that season when it comes to playoffs mean absolute shit in this sport.

I am willing to bet that the #1 overall pick in 2020 now 21 years and enterting season 4, will have a better year and will have more ice time. Call me crazy. We now have a coach who.actually has a track record for player development.

If he meets 80% of his draft day potential we end up with a 1st line winger. Let's give him a chance with a new regime before wanting to trade him for picks that we will whiff on anyway.

Disagree. But who knows.

I mean, that’s different. You can argue that it was a fluke for whatever reason. The backup goalies, Igor, whatever.

But what you can’t do is diminish how far they went. They were the 3rd team out of 32 teams. To categorize that as “barely half the amount of wins” needed to hoist the cup is laughable.
