Btw if I had to bet on it, Ovechkin is going home after he retires. Maybe he’ll surprise me and want to get into NHL Management, and Ted could sweeten the pot by letting him get a small ownership %….guess we’ll see.

Does anyone think there's any chance of Ovi playing past his current contract? Seems like a given he'll easily break the record before this contract is up. I think I remember seeing him give interviews about retiring or going to the KHL after breaking the record but I believe those were older when the record was much further out of reach and they may have been half joking answers.

I'd think y'all have a better pulse on what he could be thinking. I look at it and think he could very well be sitting on 950+ goals at the end of the current contract, at that point why the heck not go for 1000? Big Ovi fan and of course he should do whatever is best for him but selfishly I so badly want to see him hit 1000.

I think he walks away at the age of 40 when his current deal is up.

Take those old interviews with a grain of salt. Lots of European players say that they would like to finish their careers in Europe but only the ones that fall off a cliff usually actually do it.

As for how long he'll play...who knows. He's gunning for the record but after that he'll play until he is no longer effective. He holds himself to a high standards and like many of the greats of the past, he's not going to keep playing just for the sake of few goals.

This is not your average European, this is one the most famous and influencive human beings in Russia. This is the man who loves his country and his people and feels in debt for his team where grew up playing. After the record is broken, nothing will keep him in the NHL after the contract is done.

I could see Ovie taking 1 year deals untill he hangs it up. Maybe he wants to be the only player in the 1000 goal club. That sounds cooler then jerking off in the KHL.

I think if Ovechkin is at ~930-950 and isn’t limping along I could see him taking 1 year deals to get to 1000.

I'd love to see it, I already feel spoiled having been able to watch his career so far, any more we can squeeze out towards the end of his career would be a cherry on top. Although as a moderate KHL fan who watches some games it'd be cool to see him go there and light it up too. Either way, the day he retires from the NHL will be a sad day for fans everywhere.

I think a lot depends on how the team is doing and how he’s doing. He’s one of the few athletes I believe when they say they’ll just walk away if they can’t play to a certain standard.

That said, if there’s some young blood on the team playing fun hockey and competing for a playoff spot or better and he can still contribute then yeah, I could see him sticking around. If the team is still fading and it’s clear a full tear down is in order then I think he’ll be done when his contract is up.

There is nothing to do in KHL for him Id guess

Remember him skating to the glass where his family sits after last goal? I can see him wanting to do that many more times if he can still score. Should be fun to score in front of your sons,

Him scoring so much in KHL where you have to skate more... looks like harder task. I would not be surprised to see him sign another contract with Caps.

But some just don't believe in what I say :P

Only if SHTF so much in Russia he just can't go back period

Otherwise 99% sure he follows Datsyuk/Fedorov path

7 more games to score at least 8, for his record-breaking 10th 50 goal season.
Very much within the realm of possibility. OV loves challenges, its what drives him.
Wouldn't surprise me if he came through.

Looks like the record breaking 10th 50 goal season is out of reach this year.
Bad luck around for OV recently, with Covid and all the other personal events in his life.
But he'll still get both records, one of the most determined athletes I have ever seen.
