When Ovechkin signed his 5 year deal before the start of last season he was 164 goals behind Gretzky's 894. Ovechkin was at 730 career goals.

Lots of people said he had to really cut into that 164 during his first 2-3 seasons as he would be 39 years old going into year 4 of his deal and 40 years old in the final year.

So far he has done just that by scoring 50 last season and 40 this season. That is 90 goals of the 164 which leaves him with 74 goals to score over the last 3 years of his contract and what's left of this season.

75 goals to break the record and hit 895.

And 80 goals for 900. ;)

Injuries or some political changes can still derail that.

But it looks like a question of time.

Unbelievable to say that honestly.

PS: I will proclaim myself one of the biggest Caps and Ovechkin fans in Finland.

I think the real question now is will Ovi break the record in the 2024/25 season or will he need the 2025/26 season to get there.

Lets assume he gets 5 more this year, leaving him needing 70.

40 next year.
30 in 24/25 and he's there. And that's a reasonable decline for a guy getting up there at his age.

Even figuring 35 and 25*, the overall calculus is about the same, only the months change.

So, March/April 2025, or Oct/Nov 2025? Man this is going to be fun to watch.

*Knowing Ovi he may just put up 45 and 41 and do this around January 2025.

Man, all this counting makes me realise how close to the end we are. The closer he will get to the record, the closer he will be to retiring. As someone who fell in love with hockey before Ovi came around i cant believe how much joy i will lose from not being able to watch him anymore. Shit, even checking the stat sheet to see if he scored is exciting. I never had a favorite team so i used to watch all kinds of games just for the joy of watching hockey.

He hasn't talked about that in a while. I wonder if having his kids has changed his thinking.
Yeah I wonder is current events in eastern europe might have altered a post NHL career plan (admittedly this could radically change considering how things play out). I mean post-NHL player career he can probably write his ticket in the DC area related to the Capitals. With both kids born in Florida pretty likely like that AO and wife could apply for green card status and get it.

Why would he stay in US?

Was not my attention to say that was a predicted path but a logical option to consider post-NHL career with two kids born in USA (both in Florida).

I have no doubt that AO loves his country. His obvious pride on the winter olympics participation and world championship are obvious. What I will not do is speculate on AO's opinion on current events or current leadership in Russia in general. I generally do not waste the energy on the unknowable. Would not be surprised if AO returns post-NHL to play in the KHL. For me his his NHL/Capitals GOAT legacy will be as it should.

My own personal opinion one can love their country but despise some actions it takes. Yes... those two things can coexist. Still waiting on where the weapons of mass destruction are in Iraq.

Ovie and Nastya did not have to have their kids in the US. They chose to, which means they also chose to have their boys be US citizens. It suggests a future plan to live at least part time in the States.

Why would they want to do that? Well, there's a significant Russian ex-NHL population in Florida, which is where their sons were born. They can spend Russian winters somewhere warm. And Ovie has strong connections here after living in the US for most of his adult life

Curious what Russian ex-pat population per US State was.

Headline from 2030: Ambassador Ovie finalizes peace accord between US and Russia, century long Cold War now over. KHL now officially associated with NHL. Former president Trump makes “I would have done it sooner” statement from his jail cell.

If Ovechkin was really planning on relocating to the US after retirement, I don't think we'd see him summering in Russia every year. Folks thinking that the War in Ukraine has changed his opinion are willfully deceiving themselves.

I think chasing the record plays the biggest part. Back then i dont think he thought he would be this close. But regardless i think he does finish out playing for Dynamo. Even if its just one of those sign to retire in their jersey type of deals.

Don't kid yourselves of thinking that OV will stay in US after his career in NHL is over. It's not happening. I have no doubt that he will be part of the Russian hockey federation as head of something, who knows if he will be successor of Tretjak, there is a very good chance of that.
