Would be pretty cool if he stayed in the organization at least in some way.
But like...doing what...? He'll always be the Cap GOAT and probably show up for some ambassador stuff, but I can't imagine (or really want) him involved in any operation or front office stuff. I don't know if any part of his game has ever given me the impression he'd have any skill at that.

I'd expect Ovi to leave the NHL as soon as he feels he can't play to the level required, and his retirement will just be having fun playing in the KHL. I mean, this was the guy who was basically playing hockey 365 days a week at some points in the early 2010's when we'd flame out and he'd go play for Russia. I don't know if he'd know what to do with himself if he couldn't go play.

Tex always speculated that Ovi would take some kind of ownership stake and that the deal was already in place more or less with Ted. Because he is and in some ways always will be the face of the franchise.

I dunno why he would though. It's not as if he's been underpaid and making up for that. They've done nothing but right by him, why would he be promised an ownership stake after it's all said and done?

to keep him involved with the organization. it doesn't have to be huge or controlling or anything.

Ovi will most likely become minister of sports in 10-15 years. That is likely the reason he is showing support for Putin, Medvedev etc and his doctorate in Sports physiology will be the motivation for him getting the position.

Russia is Russia is not like the West.

If we are doing predictions on Ovechkin when he retires, I think he will own lots of houses and go wherever he wants. For tax purposes Florida makes sense in the USA.

There's one simple answer.... Maybe he or she likes it here? Have you asked him?
you've never visited Moscow and dont realize what it is Id guess

ps: its not political thing, just being from Moscow, having lots of money and respect, and you dont need to move anywhere. he can travel wherever he wants for fun, but I doubt he will do anything like daily job for front office.

Backstrom is maaaaaybe, but Id bet he will go back to Sweden

I dont know, there are many roles in the organization. He can pass by his statue outside of the arena on his way to work.

But in all seriousness, Ovechkin will be forever linked to this organization. Even in retirement he will still draw attention for many years to come. I think if he is staying in US, he is definitely going to be with the team in some capacity. Though i expect he returns to Russia when its all set and done.

And yes, like other posters said i think there is a major role in in Russian hockey waiting for him.

I doubt anyone can lure Ovechkin in such a fun-lacking job that is also very likely to decrease his popularity.
Then again, we all know how to make God laugh. The idea that Larionov has finished his 1st season as a head coach is still mind blowing.

Doubt this is the exciting record that will motivate AO to keep playing ;)

FWIW, Larionov was BORN to be a coach. He was basically a player-coach to the younger Russians in Detroit. But yeah, Ovie in an administrative capacity doesn't seem like a good fit. He's a leader, but not a bureaucrat.

I don't need to visit Moscow because I'm not making this choice. Ovi is making his choice and there is only one reason why he would stay in America when he retires from the Caps. The reason is, he wants to. Your opinion on Moscow vs DC or Miami is meaningless, as is mine. His opinion is all that matters. Has he shared it with you lately?

I should edit this: Maybe his wife likes it here and he would stay to make her happy. Has she shared her opinion on the matter lately?

Anyway, the more likely outcome is that he splits time... Moscow may be lovely but the winters are better in Miami :D

I don't think anyone took your comment as political. But there are amazing cities all over the world. Including in Russia and here in the U.S. Moscow isn't the only one. I'm absolutely certain Ovie will always have a home in Moscow. But many of us are pointing out that it may not be where he--and his wife, importantly--choose as their primary home where they raise their kids.

I don't think Ovechkin ever spent a second more in DC than he needed to. All his extracurriculars seem to be in Moscow with Russian club, national or celebrity teams. That or Miami.

Last time I checked, Miami was in the US. It's also where his kids were born. The conversation was about Russia vs. US.

Coming from someone that lives staying in the accountable present this ridiculous debate on post-AO career seems like a waste of energy.
I just think it's an interesting question. We obviously won't know the answer until the day comes. But it's intriguing.

what does dick Patrick do on a daily basis? maybe ovi can accept being dynamo's president and spend some time on TV like messier :)

the little tidbits I heard from him commenting hockey weren't bad, he's certainly much better articulating in Russian than you'd guess

he doesn't need to be tretyak (fhr president) or political figure, because he doesn't need money I'd guess again

and Miami... there are places with warm weather much closer to Moscow

cities like DC or say NY are no match to Moscow at all, don't know much about Miami though

don't underestimate safety and education for kids too. you could be blinded about it, but matching those of Moscow is very hard

73 to go...should we have a countdown thread with caps jersey numbers? Is there a 73 other than Sheary?
