Gallagher also exists don’t forget lol
He's on the 4th line in my books. For sure I don't expect him to start out there. But hopefully, MSL just can't justify playing Slaf and RHP behind him due to their play at some point.

Newhook>Benson

Just imagine we traded 31 and 37 for pick 12 and selected Benson lol

But instead of an 18 year old Benson we get a 22 year old NHL ready Newhook.

This trade is such a massive win, I’m amazed so few our realizing it.
I like the trade. But Newhook has to take that next step. Benson has huge potential. Very different player.

If the Sabres ever give up on him early, I'd be all over that!

@DramaticGloveSave any chance we can get Lafreniere for a package around Barron?

I doubt it, as I think the Rangers will look for an established NHLer like Debrincat.

I’m 100% sold on RHP long term, but wouldn’t be surprised if he started the year in Laval- unless we trade away a vet. Probably see an opening day lineup in everyone’s healthy of:

Caufield-Suzuki-Monahan
Newhook-Dach-Anderson
Slafkovsky-Dvorak-Gallagher
Hoffman-Evans-Armia
(Pitlick-Pezzetta)

I hear you. But if RHP kills it in camp, they can't hold him back. MSL has to have the balls to scratch one of Armia or Hoffman.

Don’t think Rangers would give up for Barron just yet. Do think Barron could fetch a decent player though. I’d very much look into trading Barron and a forward for a winger with potential.

I wonder what we could get Lafreniere for. Probably would cost more than we're willing to give up.

I think the Rangers could trade him in a package to a team with their hands tied like Ottawa with Debrincat or Winnipeg with Scheifele.

But then imagine we fast forwarded 4 years and Benson hadn't eclipsed 33 points. Few would be chuffed.

it's a win if he grows this year and becomes a consistent forward. I agree, the potential is worth the picks, but I won't call it a win until he's successful in the top 6.

I would rather have Benson, but I also had him in my top 10. Probably will bust.

Hughes trades were great, the drafting, not has impressed.
Come on now, he drafted #1 OA coming out of the pandemic with no consensus 1,2 or 3. That alone is unbelievably unlucky. This year we miss out on can’t miss #1 C’s picks 1-4 unbelievably unfortunate. I‘m confident Slaf, Beck & Hutson will amount to (at least) serviceable players. This year we picked the #1RHD of the draft, that’s never a bad thing. He wasn’t my choice but he’ll be, at least, a serviceable player moving forward. Dach & Newhook are spectacular adds from the 2019 draft along with our own Cole…..

Agreed about being unlucky, if we just switch draft positions from last year and this year we have Bedard and Jiricek and nobody is crapping on Hughes.

Put Dvorak on the 4th, move money hands to center the 3rd, push anderson and slaf up the lineup and dress RHP. He easily deserves to be in the lineup compared to the vets

Also I could see

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Slaf - Newhook - Anderson
RHP - Monohan - Gally
Hoffman - Dvorak - Evans

Actually interesting to look at Newhook's history in comparison to Caufield's, going back to the draft. He had a better D+1 in the NCAA, solid D+2 across 3 leagues as well.

Their progression started differing in their D+3 but let's remember that Caufield had a terrible start before being given extreme freedom by MSL, something which Newhook has never had.

I would say they are essentially 1-year removed from having a similar path. Newhook definitely doesn't have the goalscoring potential but in terms of overall ability... What if he could work his way back to a Caufield-level piece in our puzzle?

Yeah it’s funny how people don’t see the potential upside being bigger. If he was 24-25 then that’s a different story. But he’s barely had time or opportunity to do much.

I'm one of Pitlick's biggest fan, but RHP deserves that spot more than him, not even talking about Armia/Hoff

I agree if you talking about an 18yo Benson vs a 22yo Newhook, but you draft Benson not for his ability right now, but for his potential and no one knows what he'll be at 22.

You really can't compare the two as of right now, because one has 4 more years of development under their belt.

I see it differently. I had Caufield well ahead of Newhook in their draft years, and Newhook made it interesting in their D+1 season. But before and since it's been all Caufield. Hobey baker, 48 goals in his last 82 games, best USNTDP goal scorer ever.

Nothing against Newhook, as I think he can bring a lot of value to our top 6, but Caufield might very well score 50 some day.

I think Zach Benson have a star type potential. The best comparable for Newhook is Oliver Moore, speedy player with great potential to put 50-60 pts per season. It's like Habs trade their 31 and 37 for 17th and pick Moore. That's really good.
