That lineup looks like Macklin Celebrini to me.
As incredible as that would be, what makes you say that?

Sakic didn’t give away Newhook here, we did pay up.

I think ultimately Newhook didn’t fit the Avs lineup and timeline and he will here.

I’m expecting a big year, love this trade.
The hope is that the Avs never really trusted him with big enough offensive role, but MSL will give him that role with time to grow into it.

It may take some time for him to be ready though. Even Dach didn't produce that well until we found the right role for hiim to take his game to the next level in.

If we go Suzuki, Dach, Monahan down the middle, he'll have 3 good lines on which to try to find his niche. I don't think Dvo as his C would do the trick. I also don't want Slaf, RHP, Anderson, and Caufield playing with Dvo as their C. Really hope they go Suzuki, Dach, Monahan at C, though I don't expect it out of the gate.

Few sure things outside of Caufield and Suzuki. This is a team that had about a -80 goal differential last year, both because we let in too many, and scored too few. It's hard to see how that closes.

Health has to improve. Some things that COULD cause improvement:
- Monahan being healthy would be huge (not the most likely though). We were a bubble team when he was healthy.
- The Dach of the second half of the season is the Dach of all of next season.
- The Matheson of the second half of the season is the Matheson of all of next season.
- The RHP - Anderson combo of the second half of the season is the RHP - Anderson combo of all of next season.
- Caufield stays healthy.
- Newhook takes that next step.
- Is Slaf ready to take a step? certainly room for improvement.
- Can Dvo get back to the 48 points per 82 games production he had the first year with us if on the wing with offensive players?
- AND....NO MORE DROUIN, DADONOV, EDMUNDSON, AND WIDEMAN - MANY ADDITIONS BY SUBTRACTIONS.

If Newhook was anywhere that good, Avs wouldn't gave up on him.
He was starting to bust big time there and they let him go. Let's hope he can bring his mojo back, but I don't expect miracles form him.
If you look at the reaction to this trade by Colorado's fans you certainly get the impression that they are happy to see him go and that they are shocked at how much the return was. They certainly think he is not top 6 material.

Still have a hard time getting around to this one. Nothing against the potential. But I wonder if our 31st and 37th would of gotten us Lafrenière instead.

Bednar used a waste like Compher 20 min a game. What Newhook did with Colorado is irrelevant. What he does this season will tell the tale.
Yeah I like Bednar but there’s no denying he is a vet reliant coach….that’s not being critical because….obviously, he won a cup. Most Avs fans have said that “the coach is hard on young players but you can tell he see‘s the potential in Newhook“ And that’s evidenced by the 159gms he played as a rookie & sophomore, good for top 5 in 2019 draft.

The Avalanche just replaced Newhook's speed by signing Miles Wood. Great pick up at a low price.

Super dumb player though, takes bad penalties and has a low hockey IQ. Bad contract for a bottom six player who can't even kill penalties.

No chance, not even close.

It is just ridiculous that people are crapping on Newhook just like they did with Dach. His production is very good for a 20-21 year old player on the 3rd line with no reps on the top PP unit.

Newhook was just a couple of points off from scoring at .5ppg clip in his rookie season.

He had a classic sophmore slump and couldnt reach the expectations of filing the second line centre role on a team looking to compete for a cup. That's pretty normal for a player to not meet that goal in their second season.

There is clearly a lot of potential at play here and I can see why Colorado just doesn't have time or space to wait for him to develop. Their window is open now, they need to fill their roster with players ready to contribute now, not in a couple of years.

We should all wait a while before writing this off.

Only the dumb ones. The smart ones say the complete opposite. :sarcasm:
I'll go out on a limb and stick by our Pro scouting assessment.

This is how I look at it. Usually when an org gives up on a young player, they've had a few consecutive seasons of like 15-20 points, and just haven't put it together. Newhook didn't progress much in his second season production wise, but he did score 14 goals last season, which is the same as Dach (albiet with more games played). That's really nothing to slouch at for his 2nd season in the league, while playing a position that is probably over his head.

As a winger I think we'll see some serious development in his game this season. Looking forward to see what he can do in our top 6 this season. I think many people are going to be in for a surprise...

Maybe.

Not like Laf has been traded.

Not like Laf has shown much more. They've both shown about the same in the regular season.

Laf has had better moments in the playoffs, but Newhook has "won" a cup. He's been there and played and learned from how the vets would have handled the situation.

Same production as teravainen did at the same age with the Hawks, the year he was traded to the canes.

Better production than that goofy kid from Carolina who signed the offer sheet had at the same age

I'm cautiously optimistic

I’d be curious to know what held him back in Colorado. Not sure he was able to tap into all the tools he has. I didn’t like to hear from Avs posters that he couldn’t handle playing center but if being the best he can be means he stays a winger, I don’t see an issue.

I think if last season was Newhooks first season in the NHL Avs fans would have been perfectly happy with his production and role.

But because he was in the league maybe a year or two before he was mentally and physically ready, avs fans saw stagnation and limited potential. Kind of how I (Habs fans) felt about kotkaniemi when he was offersheeted.

I don't think either player was damaged by playing in the NHL earlier than optimal, but a lot of players don't hit their potential till 22-24, or even later.

You would think avs fans would know this, Nate MacKinnon was a 53 point player when we was Newhooks age.

He signed Drouin! Can you imagine?! It already started! :sarcasm:
And Johansen.

Dude, stop with your condescending admonitions and projections. You’re the one who fabricates stuff and then you tell others to chill when called on it.

If you don’t want to be called out for twisting the contents of posts, then it’s simple — just refrain.

If you stopped distorting posts and inferring things that were not logically intended from other people’s messages, then at that point, you might even be coming up with a post that, would be no different than 99% of the comments on this board.

You said you're mad Hughes made a deal with Sakic and he said he thinks you should give Hughes some credit of his own. He didn't twist anything you said he just directly responded to you that Hughes deserves some benefit of the doubt. Odd reply.

Avs were in “win now mode” from the time Newhook joined prior to 2021 playoffs - 2-yrs NCAA + 6-NHL regular season GP under his belt.

Go back and reflect on how much time it took MacKinnon to become a bonafide NHLer… and that’s with Avs in development mode his first few seasons
