They basically traded the 37 pick for Newhook . Florida pick was basically free for us and Fairweather won't amount to anything. You won't get a better player at 37 than him plus he is NHL ready.Don't have to wait for 3 or 4 years

terrible take, Domi isn't 22 years old, the Habs clearly think they are getting someone that in a few years will be a lot better then they have shown so far. The Habs should be targeting players under say 24 years old or so, Domi would be like putting a screen door on a submarine.
Oh yes, I remember now, Domi was geriatric when we acquited him.

This seems nice. Untapped upside.

But Hughes isn't following the expected or normal or typical rebuild gameplan. @Lafleurs Guy hope you can concede this point by now.
How is he not following the typical rebuild plan? He’s traded vets for picks/prospects and for the 2nd year in a row is drafting top five.

How is that not the typical plan?

Reminds me of the Andrew Shaw trade (to get him) which I didn't like. This one I like a bit more than that one, though. Still seems like a lot, but I'm assuming the Habs like and believe in this player.

Its much closer to being a Dach deal than a Shaw deal. Shaw was older, established and overrated from his playoff performance. Newhook has draft pedigree and is a player Montreal feels they can "unlock" in the same manner they did Dach.

Corey Sznajder has a good breakdown:

I have no idea how this deal will turn out, but Newhook is still a work in progress, and Hughes is betting they can make better use of him than Colorado.

That’s only semantics. We’re a rebuilding team that has traded off a 1st and a 2nd in a deep draft. There will be fallers and we’ll bite ourselves.

In reality, we’ve shipped out quality roster players — they just had yet to be named.

Friggin’ Sakic — Hughes learned nothing from his past dealings with him.
There no guarantee those picked players wotlrk out either. Chill out we also still have 5th overall.

Give it up. That primadonna is signing with the Kings. Back to things that actually matter.

More trades like this and he might be done as GM. How small do they want to get? To make sure that they don’t value size and physicality, they threw in Fairbrother even if he’s only a fringe asset.

This is looking like Gorton’s blueprint with the Rags. We’re going to get rag dolled.

But, we’re still in the early stages of roster building, let’s see what else comes up.

Trades for one small forward and he's on the path of being done? Let's see what else he has in store first.

Drafting Michkov would be amazing but yah, that's a small top 6/9

Slaf 6'4 / Suz 5'11 / CC 5'7
Newhook 5'11 / Dach 6'4 / ?

Let's say this is our top 6 (Slaf and Newhook both take steps up).

I don't think size is that big of a concern here. Hell, we could add an other goal scoring midget (Michkov) on the second line.

We have to get bigger, yes. On the bottom 6.

Caufeld 5’7´´
Gally 5’9´´
Pinard 5’9’´
Newlook 5´10´´
Farrell 5´ 9 ´´
Mesar 5´ 9´´

Most of us see it. For now, we are in transition years but once we are out of it, we need more size/skating types.

Trying to defend the move and thinking size don't matter anymore is reaching to defend.

Yeah, definitely would have preferred 2024 Colorado's pick going back.

Newhook's only 22, and only finished his 2nd full season in NHL, so there's still a lot of room for development. He brings a lot of speed too, which the team could use.
Plus he's from Newfoundland so he'll likely be the best beer drinker on the Habs so there's also that. :)

Are you dense? It was a joke clearly. I see you are hiding in the shadows looking for your past debate revenge. I think you are the one who needs to give it up.

You are really not comprehending things well like you think you are. Takes a lot for me to put someone on ignore mode. Keep it up

ok, let's revisit this in 5-6 years and see where that player (pick) is!!!!

honestly it shows me they don't have as much faith in the scouts if they don't see the talent available at 31 etc. I don't think the people on this forum are far off on their talent evaluation and I agree there are franchise players in the goaltender and D postion with the 2 picks we just gave up. We are missing out on filling 2 positions with by taking on Alex f***ing Newhook. I actually prefer the scouts here to the scouts hired by Montreal, they hosers here usually get it right.
