There really is no spot for him. He shouldn't even be on PP1 right now. Giroux is much better.

His skillset is redundant on this team. Getting two really good middle 6 wingers that can score and contribute in other ways would make this team much better.
Getting Norris back next yr pushes Pinto down a line & if Formenton returns he is better than everyone else in the bottom six. We should be able to put together a pretty good top nine when everyone is healthy but keeping them healthy is another thing. Injuries have really become a problem with this team especially in net this yr.

Yes sir. When Brady crushes guys, they take it because they know Brady will drag them to center ice and destroy them. A couple more guys in that mold would be a better alocation of cap space. If the idea is to play heavy forechecking hockey. I'm not saying the guys aren't finishing checks or shying away, it just seems that when teams say "Ok. Alright, we can play like that." the team has trouble with it. I think this is less about The Cat and more about the Senators roster construction and use of cap space. Trading him would be a hockey trade. It might be different if the bottom 6 had been built differently over the last couple years. We are where we are now though and it seems like tough choices are going to have to be made for the next couple. Choices that are going to be easily debatable on both sides...and there will be yelling and noise. Meaningful games? We are at meaningful desicions.

Saying when Formenton returns is like saying when Boucher becomes Chris Neal. It could happen, but not in this Marvel Universe.

I'm very confident Formenton plays in the league again. I am not as confident it's here. It's not impossible just unlikely. Only way I see it happening is if there is new management to go along with new ownership.

Batherson
He's been great on the PP, so I think he still gets his opportunity there. 5 vs 5 he's been just ok.

I also think that shooting percentage will come bak up.
This team, without their best PP shooter still ranked at the very top of the league. Norris will only make PP1 better.

His shooting % will come back up. He is playing with a lot of pressure and is not adjusting well to it. He has never played with any expectations. Coming in as a “star”, the “two time 40 goal scorer “…he has completely psyched himself out

Let this guy rebounding be someone else’s problem.

We did this with Ryan we cannot make the same mistake. We just can’t.

I was always wary of the Debrincat trade, even early after the trade announcement. It was the term (versus player) that concerned me. It was a one year deal with a "potential" (maybe) 2nd year. It seemed like a high price to pay for a short/shorter term player and was also jumping the gun versus where the team was at in terms of its timing (cycle) and development. JMHO.

Yeah I don't see a guy who "doesn't want to be here." His emotion on the tying goal before it was called back plus that gigantic hug for Brady after he bailed him out, plus all the behind the scenes interactions with his teammates and stuff like Steve Warne quoting a source close to the DeBrincat family saying Alex loves Ottawa says otherwise. I see an introvert who's in his own head and trying too hard to live up to the high expectations of being the centrepiece in a blockbuster trade, gripping the stick too tight in what's basically a contract year with a life changing amount money on the line. I get the parallels but I really don't think this is another Bobby Ryan situation. When the contract stuff is resolved one way or another, I believe he'll return to the level of play he established prior to this season.

There is no comparison to Ryan.

DBC is creating his own chances, skating hard and generally being noticeable for not finishing great chances.

Ryan was the opposite of that.

The last 2 games alone show what DBC can bring. It might not have been as obvious on TV but he made a fantastic defensive play deep in zone to break up a one-timer by AM and it led to a rush the other way.

He also went end-to-end in the dying minutes and almost scored on both nights. He is very good, we just need to keep his contract reasonable.

I think given what PD gave up to acquire DBC I doubt he doesn't re-sign him & I'm quite sure he will. What that will be for could end up as a point of dispute but it will likely be around the $8 mil mark IMO give or take. I can also see the argument to trade him for a good young RD like David Jiricek who could grow with this young team, but whether he would be available or not is another story. I also think he will be good insurance for the day Giroux hangs up his skates, losing two of these 50 plus pt players over the course of a couple of yrs could be devastating for this young team. DBC will make this forward group so much better next season & with the return of Norris will only get better IMO. I also like what I have seen in Greig, but it could take him a few yrs before we see him produce in the 50 pt range.

It's his first year on a new team without Kane and without Norris. He works hard, he creates, he's a good forechecker. He needs to use his elite shot way more.

im sick of how unclutch he is

trade him

Scores with a minute left to tie the game against Calgary

Scores the tying goal against the Leafs on Saturday with time winding down (I know it was off side but he still shelfed it)

Scores a huge PP goal top shelf against the Wings that basically sealed the win in one of the games

Also has 5 GWG including 1 in OT

That’s just off the top of my head, so unclutch lmao

hes very uncluth, blatantly obvious to anybody who has watched him this season.

guy can't score on open nets every game, dont even have to think of a few moments when its almost every night

congratulations to a 9mil player showing up for a handful of games this season

trade him

I'd love to see a 3 way deal with Arizona to add Crouse and recoup some picks. He fits this teams identity. Use the extra cap space on a goalie/another forward that can score 20. Add Norris to the lineup and potentially have Formenton come back (i know long shot) and the team is all of a sudden really deep. Really big and really fast. Even without Formenton the added cap room would give the team more flexibility.

Is it elite though?
Has he beat a goalie from more than 15 feet this year?
His shooting percentage is a week established low for him at 9% or whatever today.
At his normal pace on 15% that’s about 15 more goals I believe, I’d like to know how many wide side wide open net goals he had playing with Kane in any given year…l don’t want to guess 15 but I’m guessing 15 lol

Anyway, I go back and forth on this personally. He’s clearly an a good player, smart, handles the puck well, and can make plays but man I’m not sure his shot is elite, and if it’s not elite how can pay him $8/year.
If we don’t sign him I won’t freak out or anything, and if we do sign him ill be 100% behind him. Tough call.

I think it is, yeah. It's a heck of a snap shot, he just doesn't use it enough.

But, yeah, I'll admit i go back and forth these days on the player. I like him, but he's not performing up to his standards and it hurt us so badly.

Worst thing we can do is sign him to an $8mm+ long term contract.

Ideally we trade him and recoup some fraction of what we gave up. If that's not possible for some ungodly reason then let him play out next year and walk.

If you don’t accept that good young players can have down seasons, then you end up giving up on them too early and lose out.

I think DBC is a great player and we shouldn’t be looking to trade away the good players we have.

Makes me shudder seeing trade proposals for quantity over quality all of a sudden. Or people wanting to get more draft picks.

Glad we have pros at the helm while we shoot the shit in here, because we lack typically lack a cohesive vision, patience, and are tremendously reactive and short sighted.

Scary to run a team like that.
