It has been mentioned but I will add again that having a baby brings many changes and is an extremely difficult transition.

We don't know if he is sleeping well, how his wife is doing (postpartum depression is a very real thing), etc...

I am disappointed in how his year has gone but have to review it with an understanding he may just be having normal, new baby type issues.

I don't ever post on here but I felt the need to express my opinion. It was rumored he didn't want to play in Ottawa when he was traded. Every time I watch him play I get the feeling he's lazy and unless he's shooting on a wide open net (for the most part) he can't do what he did in Chicago. I have a feeling it's as simple as him not wanting to be in Ottawa resulting in him being lazy. That's just my opinion though.

I like Debrincat.

But this team may very well miss the playoffs with him being our 5th best forward. If Norris was healthy, I imagine he plays a bigger role in our success than Cat, too.

If he is willing to sign under $7.5m, sign him. If he is seeking $7.75-8.25m, take a hard look at the trade market and then make the choice (trade can sign) that serves the team best. $8.25m +? Max 4yrs or send him packing for what you can get.

I dont think it’s laziness, why would he be lazy in a contract year? I think he has had trouble establishing chemistry with his line mates. He may not want to be here because he hasn’t felt like a good fit with his teammates and or coaching staff but I doubt he arrived not wanting to be here.

I mean he gets lots of chances, that would be a sign that he has chemistry. He definitely has shown hockey sens to get open and to the soft spots. However his number 1 talent is finishing and its been downright bad this year. I dont see him create much on his own either. Just dont see him as a long term fit that makes sense here given what the team already has and how much cap space they have. The identity the team is building his style of play doesnt really fit it either.

And that’s fine, the chemistry thing.

But even in spite
of that, when the puck is on his stick, in a prime spot, he hasn’t been good all year

That actually sounds awful. My partner and I don't want kids because we're not prepared to deal with sleepless nights, but reading this just adds to that lol.

It could be that, I think also playing with Kane helps a lot, defenders will focus more on Kane leaving DBC wide open for the one timer. Ottawa doesn't have a Patrick Kane.

Watching his highlights from last season I was struck how perfect the setups were from Kane.

DeBrincat was finishing those passes quite a bit better than this year but he definitely seems to have a smaller wheelhouse than someone like Norris who is extremely consistent in his ability to get off quality shots, even if the pass isn't perfect.

Once Norris is back next season he should definitely be on the top PP as the shooter. Question then is what to do about the left side. Do we demote Stutzle to PP2 to play DeBrincat on the left dot? Does he get moved to Batherson's spot down low? Or should DeBrincat be demoted to PP2?

I think the answer should be the latter, which makes me question whether it's worth shelling out 8M to re-sign DeBrincat when he's not necessarily needed with 5 excellent skill forwards already signed, most of them to big money deals.

Giroux is here for only two more seasons & once he is gone that frees up $6 mil. I think they should keep DeBrincat because they will need him once Giroux is gone as a top six player rather than lose two top six players. They really only have to figure out the next two yrs & with the number of players leaving should free up some $$$.

If you sleep train your baby starting around 3-4 months you won’t have too many sleepless nights after that. My wife insisted on doing this with our daughter, I was hesitant at first but it only takes a couple of tries before they’re sleeping on their own through the whole night.

We should have went for Fiala.

I don't think Fiala was interested in re-signing here.

After adding Giroux to Stutzle, Tkachuk, Norris and Batherson we really didn't need another 8M top line forward.

The value for DeBrincat wasn't bad but I said last summer we might have been better off adding a decent forward for around half that salary and then using the other 4-5M to improve the bottom 6, defense and/or goalie positions.

I think part of his lack of success is that it is a contract year. Everytime he doesn't score he loses confidence and starts squeezing his stick and the contract starts weighing on his mind. Obviously some players perform well in contract years and some players it makes them anxious. I think he is feeling anxious about it and it has affected his performance.

I think it’s time for DeBrincat to play with a true number 1 centre to maximize his value to the team. Move DeBrincat to the number one line with Brady and Stutzle to see if he can start scoring some key goals down the stretch. Move G to the second line he appears to be productive no matter what line he is on.

just not 9m player.. just not, will not have same impact. looks like skinner type, if team plays good point and goals will come, if its tough time, hi is not game changer boy..

for me 8-9 m that type of player is too much.. trade or not trade both situation will be norm for me..

Giroux signed here two weeks after Fiala was traded and signed,

Just hoping we can flip him for someone more useful game in and game out. Frustrating

It's gonna be tough.

Teams are aware of the situation we're in and also of the contractual situation with Debrincat.

Best case scenario he is willing to re-sign in that 7.5-8M range but that's extremely unlikely.

More likely is we either have to:

1) Overpay him long term and hope for the best
2) Trade him for an underwhelming return
3) Re-sign him to a 1 year deal and risk losing him for nothing.

A bad situation to be in at this time to be sure.

At this point I'm hoping we can swap him for another guy that's kind of underperforming with a longer term contract. I can't see teams lining up to give up good assets when the QO is so high and when you see his play this season. Was expecting Giroux level play from DBC and DBC level play from Giroux. Would've been much better but here we are.

Tough to say Norris wouldn’t have this year with this lineup. 35 in 66 on a shittier team. I think people are forgetting how good he is because he is “out of sight, out of mind “ type of thing. Moving Norris is completely outrageous to even consider. Especially at his bargain contract
Well, I think this ranking of 1C versus 2C doesn't really mean much. We've got two guys that are 1C calibre.

Next year will be interesting

Tkachuk Norris Batherson physically dominated last year.

That leaves DeBrincat Stuetzle Giroux to play a more east west skill game.

We never got to see that really and it's going to be difficult for teams to contend with
