How many years did he have at 2.5?
I don't know. If he wants to play in the NHL now this is a good way to do that... If his gamble doesn't work he leaves money on the table.
He's still young .. maybe he thinks he's more ready than ever.. If its your dream. Chase it.

He's getting bad advice IMO.

How many years at league minimum until he gets back up to ~$2.25M a season?

Just to play devil's advocate, I could see Zadina and/or his agent thinking that without a change of scenery, he almost assuredly gets bought out next summer and never sees the last year of his deal if he stays in Detroit. If that were to happen, the chances of him getting another NHL contract after next season would be slimmer than it would be this offseason. Given his age, his buyout would also be for 1/3 instead of 2/3 the remaining salary similar to what went down with us and Colin White.

Zadina's two remaining contract years are for $1.83M and $2.73M respectively, which is where I'm assuming you're getting the ~$2.25M/season. If what I mentioned is the rationale behind what Zadina is thinking, he is surrendering $1.83M this season and $2.73M x 1/3 = $0.91M next season for a chance to go to a better situation to rebuild his value. In this scenario, he would have to get back to around $1.4M per season to break even, which he could possibly do in one or two seasons if he plays well enough.

It's a risk for sure and he may very well be getting bad advice, but I could also understand him looking at it as the route that will give him the best last chance to carve out a career in the NHL.

Thanks for laying it out so clearly and comprehensively.

I'll admit I missed the 1/3 vs. 2/3 thing.

I'm not much of a CBA/capologist so I appreciate the tutorial!

Still not sure how much of a market there is out there for him, and I assume he'll only sign a one-way contract given his reluctance to go to Grand Rapids.

I'd think that most teams have a prospect or player 23 and younger that has similar or better potential and/or on-ice results than Zadina.

Is it even worth picking him up to stash him on your 4th line? He has a funny skillset that doesn't seem to lend itself to bottom six play.

I'm confused about everyone saying Zadina is just walking away while TSN says he's being bought out?

Here's one explanation:

Zadina is owed $4.56M in salary over the next two seasons. This is tricky to report, because agent Darren Ferris would not comment, but, as I write this, the belief is Zadina is prepared to walk away from the money and not contest the move. According to several sources, in recent conversations, the player made it very clear he would not report if sent to the AHL next season. (That would be a contract violation.)

Basically he gets fired if he doesn't report to Grand Rapids, which are what his intentions are.

He asked for a trade, probably knowing he could be bought out if they couldn't find a suitor.

No buy out.

Mutual agreement to terminate the contract. He's forfeiting his salary over the next 2 years to became a UFA. He's gambling on himself.

Weird. I could have sword the TSN article said for the purposes of buyout in the subject line. They've either fixed it or I'm just an idiot.

Well, to buy someone out I think they have to clear waivers first.

So maybe they assumed that Detroit would do so once he did, but since then he's basically said that he's willing to walk away from the contract.

EDIT: But the buyout window is closed (as of July 1st), so maybe they're just wrong.

I wonder how all the people who are like "I don't care what the return is, just get it over with already" are going to react when the trade finally does go down.

Exactly how you would imagine.

Dorion's in a tight spot.

He gambled and unfortunately for him and for us, it didn't work out, and now he's up against the wall and everyone in the league knows it.

I feel like it was wrong. I was looking before I headed to work and didn't even click the article, but I'm sure the headline said putting him on waivers for the purposes of a buyout. Who knows with me though, I can barely remember to get out of bed in the morning.

People have been saying it in the thread on the trade board so I don't think you're the only person with that impression.
