Rentals of his calibre usually get late 1sts and maybe an ok prospect at the deadline. That might not even be what Detroit is offering us now.

If we're out-leveraged and Detroit is just offering us scraps, keep him until the deadline and see if we can make the playoffs. There will be way more buyers able to take him on then, and who knows, there's a small chance they can work out an extension (not betting on it).
Pageau got a first, second and a conditional third at TDL, so ya definitely a possibility.

He doesn’t want out of Ottawa right now, it’s not a trade demand. He just doesn’t want to sign with Ottawa long term for the next 8 years. He wants to sign with one of those teams as a UFA, if Ottawa has a trade to make that happen a year early, awesome. If they don’t, he’s got an 8+ million dollar deal to UFA. If they trade him somewhere he doesn’t want to be, he plays a year and goes to UFA.

I don’t think DBC is too worried about getting to his desired spot right away. If he does, awesome, if he doesn’t, he’s got an 8 million dollar ticket to UFA, then his desired spot.

That’s the route that, to me, is incredibly obviously happening.
Well that’s opposite of what just got reported, it’s very confusing.

What Steve Warne said is definitely opposite of what everyone else has been reporting.

I personally take that article as fluff, and am going to go with what Garrioch, Dreger, Friedman, etc. have reported. So my view is definitely skewed the side of what’s been reported elsewhere, and what’s going on between the Sens and DBC at the moment that paints a picture similar to what everyone else has reported.

If Warnes take is accurate, my take isn’t for sure

The Warne article is a fluff piece put out by his agent essentially

I’ll bet my house he’s being dealt

Maybe he had a change of heart once he realized there is no chance Nick Kypreos will be involved in Sens management.

He picked his home town and a bunch of established teams that would have difficulty fitting him in under the cap. If the team is saying they want to trade him, he isn't making it easy, so it doesn't sound like a guy that desperately wants out.

Just look around these forums, there are lots of diverging opinions on whether signing him would even be in the teams beat interest, I'm sure he and his agent understand that there's no guarantee whoever new ownership brings in will be in the keep him camp. So right now he's potentially weighing his options, sign now with zero guarantee where he plays next season, or don't sign until the uncertainty drops.

The team on the other hand is protecting its interests, asks him teams he'd consider extending with. If Det isnt interested, we might have a hard time finding a trading partner.
Is there a list of teams he'll accept a trade to?

The Warne article can be 100% accurate and he can still end up traded, your house is likely safe because Dorion really can't let things go sideways and lose him for nothing.

I don't mind either option, if he signs, great, if we trade him, I'm hopeful we can fit in a goalie and a maybe a 40+ pt physical winger with the cap room,

I wonder if his teammates convinced him tbh..

He seems like a private person with a young family, Ottawa is the perfect place to raise a young family. It is for the most part safe, lots of activities for young kids and if you’re a cottage type person, Cottage country is an hour away.

Hockey related, this team is on the cusp of having their window open with a very competitive team. As a fan, this team comes off extremely close and are only going to continue to grow with one another, exciting times are ahead, as Bob Dylan would say, “the times they are a changing”.

If that really is a reason then holding onto him and hoping a deal is made during the sason might be better than just sensing him to Detroit for scraps.

We are trying to be competitive this year after all, no?
"Competitive"? "Playing meaningful games"? Playoffs?

He's making a lot of assumptions not wanting to negotiate a deal now..

If he wants to stay.. get the negotiations going . Lay out your demands. If Dorion can't meet them convince Dorion you want to stay if the new ownership can meet the demands This no negotiation and providing a list of teams and saying you want to stay just doesn't line up for me. Talking out both sides of your mouth. If you want to stay .,. at least negotiate to see where you stand... Its about $ and term and trade protection and possibly bonuses .. what do you want.

Dorion very likely won't be here July 1st. Just like the Leafs with Treliving, Pens with Dubas/whomever, Flames with Conroy, Flyers with Briere, the Sens are likely to make a change quickly after the season is over. It's nearly impossible to get a guarentee that a new GM won't be coming in.

He could sign with his NMC kicking in, Sens could hire a new GM May 6th, then there's the hypothetical chance he could still be traded in the next 2 months that this reason relies on.

But if he was worried about that with another team, his agent could go to ownership and ask for their word that he won't be traded before his NMC kicks in. Here, there's no one to ask that of because everyone could be different in a month.

Assen na yo!

Exactly. So it’s a moot point, waiting out ownership isn’t going to change anything, the same questions about who is going to be the GM next year will still be the same questions throughout the season.

Exactly this. The problem is he probably loses millions, if not double digit millions in career earnings if he signs here.

That's why it's a difficult decision for him and his family, and why he said he needed to consult with them at the end of the season.

He picked destination cities in warm climates where the tax rates are lowest, plus his hometown. The same cities that almost all players would want to play in, for those same reasons. They only team left off the last, that fits the criteria, is Tampa (and Arizona, but who knows where they'll be in 2 years).

Tennessee - no income tax
Texas - no income tax
Nevada - no income tax
Florida - no income tax

It shouldn't come as a shock to think that Debrincat would prefer to play in those places than Ottawa, when given the choice. It's a difference of millions on a 7 or 8-year deal. The guy wants to maximize his earnings, and that's his right. He should go for it.

At least he, unlike Duchene, doesn't appear to be stringing the team or fanbase along. "I'm not interested in discussing an extension." aka. a polite hint.

It's wild that this is even a question. Everyone knew it was a risk when the trade was made. It's not out of left field.

Sometimes the most obvious reason is the reason. He's not extending here, even if a new owner comes and pinky swears that he won't trade him.

Why are people so convinced that he doesn't want to sign here because he doesn't like the city??? Total nonsense.

My impression is that he doesn't want to sign long term after having such a down year because he'd be leaving alot of potential career earnings on the table, especially with the cap potentially going up $4m when he goes UFA. The Sens, on the other hand, absolutely want to sign him long term right for the exact same reason, probably in the range of 7.5-8m (8yr). Plus, the fact that both parties know that's probably the limit the Sens can afford anyways in their cap structure.

The whole "I need to talk to my family" schtick was simply because he needs to decide between the following two options:

1. If it's worth leaving money on the table in favor of a long term contract so he can settle in Ottawa and plant his roots, especially with a newborn child.

2. Or if he wants to take the 1yr deal with the uncertainly of pricing himself out of our cap structure if he plays much better next year, or even risk getting traded this offseason.

There's been no indication that he doesn't like it in Ottawa. None whatsoever.
Called it.

More and more evidence coming out is proving my theory correct.

You guys really should listen to me more often.

When people say he "doesn't like Ottawa", they usually mean, "if given the choice, he'd prefer to play in other cities over playing in Ottawa." And that seems to be... true.

I don't think anybody actually believes that he woke up every day miserable because he had to live here for 8 months.

Players don't hate Ottawa. Or Columbus. Or Edmonton. Or Winnipeg, really. But that doesn't mean they would choose to play there, if presented with an alternative.

Debrincat has the chance to go with an alternative, and he's going to do just that. I'm sure in 8 years when someone asks, "how was that year in Ottawa?" he'll say "It was cool. Nice city. Good people." The guy doesn't seem like an asshole.

We would but.... too much to filter through to get to the "could be gems" And the over the top love for Dorion is a major turn off that's hard to look past even if he's front and center with you every post.
