Bratt for Cat sounds like a cool idea, he might be a bit cheaper to sign long term but think he'd want $8 million aav as well. Don't think it addresses the core issue though, spending that much cap on forwards when we have so many holes without adequate solutions. Cat is a better goal scorer than Bratt so i'd rather have him, but then again, if Cat wants an extra million, that could influence the rest of the roster construction quite a bit.

Good news

That reads like we're going to bring DeBrincat back on his 9M QO for next season, which is definitely not good news. Closer to the worst case scenario.

I expect the Sens to be in contention for a playoff spot next season, and if that is the case there's little chance that they trade DeBrincat away, even if he's not re-signing.

This team is not good enough to justify giving up a 1st+ for a 1 year rental, which is what DeBrincat would be at this point.

the 2nd tweet is good news. The QO I've commented on already and I don't like the approach

As long as we know before the draft it’s okay.

I would be curious to see what we can get for him in a hockey deal.

With Norris coming back and offensive progression from guys like Pinto and Grieg (and hopefully Formenton) I’m not as concerned with our ability to replace his production

No no, you need to be concerned with replacing his production. Or at least a chunk of it.

The only way we give up a 1st + for a 1yr rental is by not qualifying him.

EDIT: I misunderstood, my bad

Good on Debrincat for letting the team know and not pulling a Tavares / Stone scum bag type move.

It might be another year where Debrincat doesn’t play in his preferred market and has to move around but he will get what he wants in a year and his conscious is clear that he isn’t f***ing over the long term window of the friends he built on this team

a guy who has 1 full completed season where he scored 35 goals is a "much better sniper" than a guy who has never missed a game due to injury and has scored 40 twice... huh.
He scored 35 in 66 games and has had a great goal/g since he made the team full time.

Norris is a legit sniper but he doesn't bring the shiftiness that DBC does.

However he is a C who has become responsible defensively 5-on-5, playing PK and is already good in the dot.

My ideal scenario is we can keep DBC and then start next year with a healthy Norris, our full compliment of D, Formenton and then Greig or another AHL player rounding out our bottom 6.

Since he's been here, I've never felt DeBrincat was throwing off the right vibes for interest in an extension. I hope he stays, but will be unsurprised if he doesn't.

What's different now is that hockey-wise, he should want to stay. The confidence in the team, in the young group, the culture and the direction (up) all should be there. Ottawa is a nice place to have a young family. If he doesn't stay, it will no longer feel as if it's because we're a mess, but because some other thing we can't control isn't a fit for him. Maybe the spotlight of a Canadian market, maybe family, maybe something else. That's nice as a fan after so many years of collective insecurity and occasional self-loathing. lol

I get JT, but didn't Stone want a long term deal similar to Gaudreau, but we only qualified him for 1?

It's in his best interest to let the team know his intentions. If he wants to move on, it's better to do it now and sign long term somewhere else than to wait a year when he'll have to deal with questions all year about why he's not signing here long term. Plus there's always a chance that an injury or bad season could really hurt his ability to get that big long term deal.

Assen na yo!

You'd think this was Siberia. This is a great city to raise a kid. Not to mention he's with a young team on the rise. I'd say as long as we offer fair value, he thinks about it long and hard.

Stone only signed a 1 yr contract to FA. Then after the trade it was implied he didn’t want to be part of a rebuild , however when he signed the contract he was leading the team on that he was open to signing long term during the season

The Sens have obviously already sent him long term, "fair" offers.

They didn't trade for him, and come to a collective decision to wait it out a full year to start to really try and sign him.

They didn't just trade for him and push the can down the road. If he would have accepted a long term deal, they'd have had the paperwork signed and announced ASAP, or contract headway would have been made, not stuck in "we don't know if he wants to sign" purgatory for another month.

He'll have a good sense on who will be buying the team by July. I don't really blame him to make sure they new owners are committed. If that's what it is, then so be it, if he wants to play elsewhere, we'll have to make a move obviously.

You need to look at things from DeBrincat's perspective

1. By all accounts, he's quiet and likes stability
2. He got traded to a team with a dead owner, a rebuild underway, an uncertain future, and one that's been lacking in fan support

I can get his reluctance to sign away on the bottom line for half his hockey life

The current situation is
1. Team on the rise, solid young core, had a lot of fun here
2. Massive big money interest in the team with a commitment to keeping it in Ottawa and building a new rink
3. Clarity on ownership before the draft. Paperwork might not be done, but he'll know who he is committing to.
4. Huge response from fan base

I get him being slow to warm up to his situation. But the situation today is far brighter than it was last July

As long as he doesn't live near Hogs Back McDonalds, Cat will love it here.

That is so unbelievably specific lol. Did I miss something that happened there?
Lol I was just making a joke about the McDonalds on Prince of Wales and Hogs Back, I used to live right by it and worked at the Boys & Girls Club near it. That place is ghetto af and cops were always around because of stabbings and theft. Now that McDonalds at Rideau is gone, Hogs Back McDonalds is probably the most ghetto McD's in the city.

Exactly
You either want to be part of this group or not
You know you are getting 8ish x8
If you are still undecided after one full season
You know you are not coming back
The summer in Detroit not going to help you decide
