it's not like his contract status was a secret

Ottawa knew exactly how long there was until he was going to hit UFA when they chose to trade for him in the first place

The day he was traded everyone knew it was a gamble given his contract status.

Ottawa was going to have to "convince" him to be part of Ottawa's young core going forward.

Either they didn't do a good enough job, given his deployment, or he never had any interest in the first place.

There was a lot of noise at the time about demonstrating to Giroux that Ottawa was serious about progressing as a competitive team and that acquiring ADB was part of it.

It was an exciting time for Ottawa. We had emerged from the Melnyk shadow and the team had taken off some of the financial shackles. They wanted to bring the fans back into the building and try to build up interest in the city after years of mediocrity and savings. Unfortunately, this was a gambit that did not pay off for Dorion and Detroit reaped the benefit.

I'm not sure why Wings fan are so insecure about DeBrincat being booed in Ottawa. It reminds me of when Tavares got a standing ovation in Toronto after his first game back in Long Island.

He was a depth player in Ottawa. He's clearly a better fit in Detroit, on and off the ice. Can't they just be happy about that?

How exactly would Dorion have gone about speaking to Debrincat about that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm not sure teams can just call up a player under contract with another team and ask them if they would be willing to sign long term. It definitely would not have been in Chicago's best interest to give him permission to speak to the Sens prior to the trade.

They can get a gauge from the other GM, it happens all the time. GMs share a lot more than any of us know in trade talks, which is how so much inside shit gets leaked.

There's literally no truth to the rumor he was unmotivated, I actually can't believe there's still people putting this out there.

He had a down year (27 goals and 66 points, still pretty damn good... so yikes, I guess?) which literally every player has. Did Ovechkin give up on his team and not try in 2016? Is that how you see it? Or was it just a down year when things didn't click?

People reading into his comments where he claimed he wished he worked harder as "I gave up on my team" is actually the dumbest possible take I read on here, and I read it daily. "I had a down year and need to work harder" as "I hate my team and I didn't try at all", surely you can see the difference there.... the words people are putting in his mouth, which he never said, are ridiculous. This is worthy of shaming people for claiming this, imo.
Take the comments in context of him forcing a trade to his hometown.

He’s a selfish asshole.

Again, I don’t have a problem with players selecting their place to play. I don’t think we should really have RFA or drafts. Maybe instead each team gets entry level slots eaqch year and can sign that many new guys. Slots have different values and the higher value ones are rarer do guys have to sign for other teams or give up large amounts of money. Something like that.

But to get paid millions to half ass it because you don’t like Canada… selfish.

We are very happy about it, and nobody cares about him being booed. I'm not sure why everyone else is so insecure about us being happy about his success.

Come on, no reason to lie because it didn't work out.

Among forwards, DeBrincat was second on the Sens (behind Stutzle) in ice time per game played. I guess the Sens forwards are Stutzle and depth pieces?

Yes but the bolded is the part that didn't actually happen, and is entirely made up by bitter fans because of a down year (where he still scored 27 goals and 66 points) and this is why every post by bitter fans with hurt feelings is being called out.

66pts in 82 games is "half assing" it? Did Daniel Alfredsson half ass it in 98-99 when he had 33pts in 58 games?

6 points in 9 games is good? Like I said. Regular season player. Always has been. most small players are. Look at Gaudreau
6pts in 9 games in one single run.. when he was a 45pt player… when he was 21 years old.

How can you be labeled a “regular season player” when he’s only had one single run in the post season?

That tiny kid Marchessault did alright last post season, if you were watching.

Giroux wants to come home to play for the Sens: "oh how classy, it's awesome for the city, the team, and the league, you really love to see it!"

DeBrincat wants to come home to play for the Wings: "**** him, classless piece of **** HOW DARE HE NOT WANT TO LIVE IN RENFREW!"
It’s more the way he handled it than the desire.

Half assingn it and screwing over an employer paying you millions.

Yes.

Didn't expect that did ya?

If Chicago knew about his intentions on where he would prefer to play in 2 years its definitely not in their best interest to tell Ottawa he probably doesn't want to sign long term in Canada.
What information would Davidson have shared that would have let Dorion gauge Debrincat's desire to play / sign in Canada.

Sad? The tears of Sens fans are sad, yes. lmao yes, it's me that needs to move on. Not the countless Sens fans, including you, who are incapable of letting this go. I am quite happy about how this all played out, doesn't seem like you are at all.
And should I be? I'd appreciate an honest answer from you, a fellow fan of an NHL team. Should I be happy with how the DeBrincat experiment ended up in Ottawa? Yes our management deserves a lot of the blame and I hope they're held accountable by our new owner/POHO. But Alex deserves his share of the blame as well. Sorry for him that Chicago 'unexpectedly' traded him to a city/team he didn't want to go. That doesn't excuse the effort he put in last season especially when he was welcomed into the organization with open arms and much fan-fare. If you know in the back of your mind that you're not going to stay, fine - at least put in an honest effort while you're there.

Is that asking too much?

Debrincat trade made little sense for Ottawa at the time they acquired him.

Similarly with Tarasenko. Will never understand either of those moves.

Ottawa as usual with their terrible asset management
As far as blunders by Dorion this one is honestly not so bad. He took a shot it didn't work out. The initial trade was looked at pretty favorably for Ottawa.
