Alec Martinez Extension Talk

Yes, but that person was saying that the Kings would have $16m even if the cap stayed at $69m. Which is completely wrong. If the cap only goes up to $70m-$71m the Kings will have trouble. if it goes up to $73m, the king might be able to sign all the important RFAs and maybe Williams.

Read the Mike Richards thread, (Kingsfan poster) has already debunked the Cap nonsense numerous times.

Kingsfan's projection was even with a (ZERO) cap increase. Kings are able to keep everyone save RR/Stoll/Clifford. Williams signs a Gabo style retirement deal with low cap hit. Toffoli/Pearson on bridge deals like they should be.

So, in your estimation, the cap isn't going up at all? Also, this is where development comes into it. Something the Kings have over pretty much every team in the league. Take note Edmonton.

I think it will be around $72m, with hopes of it being more of $74m. But as of now, you have to be thinking it's not going to go up because it hasn't yet (until offseason) and the league doesn't know how much revenue was made this year.

It's not a problem till it is.

People said the same thing last year, and the year before that.

The only player(of worth) the Kings have lost due to a cap crunch is Willie Mitchell.

Not bad Lombardi, not bad.

Yeah and previous cap projections have said the league would be at $78m cap this year. But that didn't happen, and the Kings lost Mitchell and had to sign Gaborik super cheap with a lot of years. And now they could be losing Regehr, Stoll and Williams. That's a lot of veteran leadership that's gone because of the cap.

I wouldn't miss RR or Stoll. Williams would sting, but the Kings would get over it. Those are not core players.

The only players Kings fan's should worry about is the Core. The Core is locked up save Kopitar.

As long as the Kings keep Kopitar/Doughty/Quick/Carter, they will be fine.

Ditto. Why is this so hard to understand?

Will you guys just shut up about the cap already? We just signed a player who is a solid part of our defense core and is forever a legend in our organization. It's not even halfway through the ****ing season and you guys are freaking out about NEXT season. We'll cross the bridge when we have a clearer picture heading towards the off-season.

Also with A-Mart getting 4m, that tells me Lombardi thinks someone from Manchester will be ready to step in on D next season to replace RR.

Forbort/Bods/LoVerde/Miller. Most likely Forbort will get the chance.

Gravel/Ebert won't be ready, will need another season.

You know, in 2028, the cap will really turn the screw on the Kings roster. Could be disastrous. Plan accordingly now.

I have full faith in the architect of two Stanley Cup winning teams making the necessary decisions.

Homer's legacy lives on...and on...everytime I look on Capgeek and see the $$$$ next to the inept slow low IQ flyers D...and AMAc at 5 M...thru 2020...brutal. Streit and AMac getting over 10 M between the 2 of them and Isles fans still laughing.

Early and well earned Christmas gift for AMart. Huge fan of his game and good to see that done, he doesn't have that worry hanging over him. I'm guessing DL will try to get TT and TP done next with 2 yr bridge deals just south of 3M each.

What would Philadelphia trade for Lombardi?

I'm guessing the Liberty Bell, the Rocky Statue, etc.

Meh, still not enough. :)

Never mind what next years cap is; a lot can happen personnel wise between now and the end of the season via trade, performance, etc. That and we know DL isn't going to change the core until after this year as he feels loyal to the group that won it all and gives them a chance to do it again. If we miss the playoffs or lose early or something we might see a dramatic shakeup for next year but I'm not going to worry about that bridge until it's close. I'm just gonna enjoy the ride and the extension of my favorite kings dman!

That's great news. The recent stretch of games with the porous Kings' defense has really helped Martinez stand out as one of the few positives on the blueline. Unlike Greene and McNabb.

The most popular thing for King fans is to bash on McNabb just like most on here did to Muzzin. He is a young defenseman and yea will make mistakes, everyone should know and expect that as it happens with almost all guys when they are young and learning the ropes. His game has gotten better with every game played and I feel he will be a solid blueliner for us for years to come and we will need his tough style of play.

I'm glad but I know something is going to have to happen from this signing. Everyone is in win now mode, and I'm thinking about winning forever mode. My real life job is to look at the future of things and make deals not just the present, so it's just how I operate. So I see the future problems that can come with a deal like this.

Completely understand when the mind works like that. The good thing for us both is Lombardi is the same way and thinks years ahead as he makes moves for our team. I remember him saying he wants to build a winner but not for just a year or two but he hopes to be able to build a Redwing type of success with a chance to win for years. :D

Yes sir. I have been waiting for this team for 40+ years and am enjoying every minute of the ride. :handclap:

Agreed 100%. He most certainly is improving game by game. I honestly don't know what people are seeing to be so harsh on his game. There are no stats, traditional or advanced that will back the assertion that McNabb is not capable of playing defense for the Kings. People have to remember that McNabb didn't have the benefit of a season or two in Manchester learning the Kings system. Now that he's getting used to the system and his partner's tendencies, he's making better decisions and isn't as panicky with the puck in his own zone.

Wait, why are people mad about this contract? How much do you think Alec would get on the open market? Believe me, he'd get $4M/year and then some... This is another good contract, I thought his price would be $3.5M/year, in which he would've taken a slight paycut but I'd like to see him jump into the top 4 instead of being the 2nd PP/3rd pairing DMan, I think he's got what it takes to be more than that. This also looks like it is bye-bye Voynov, unfortunately.

I have no doubt all our RFAs will return, I just think Stoll's gone, for sure. Maybe JWill, unfortunately. I think Nick Shore can take Stoll's spot or we can put Richards there with Andreoff at 4C.

Regehr is probably gone. I didn't understand the Matt Greene contract this past summer and I still don't understand it. I know he's a leader, great locker room guy, has tons of experience but I just don't know if he's worth 2.5M. As someone said earlier, these signings (Muzzin/Martinez) basically means Regehr is gone and DL is comfortable with bringing one of the young guys next year. I'm thinking/hoping it's Forbort but Gravel is so so good.

Brayden McNabb has been magnificent. Another steal by Lombardi. Kid looks great and he's got a lot of potential.

Some people can't comprehend the idea that it takes a little time. Sutter and his coaching staff have turned pretty much every young defenseman they get into a useful NHL player. Not to mention that the kids Dean gives them to work with actually have quite a bit of raw talent.

McNabb has been good, nice and steady. I don't even like the guy.

But his play has been improved.

You can't underestimate the value of a top coaching staff and esp STevens who excels in training young D. McNabb has shown all the signs of rounding out , with the more minutes and game situations he plays, into a fine young D. He's got great size and is learning to use it the right way.

it's also important to note that for him, and, Voynov Muzzin and AMart before him and whoever comes after, how Crucial it is for a young D's getting their roots, and growth , having a true top 2 D to learn from and lean on, less pressure on them. Having Mitchell and Scuds helped when those young D were brought up. Just think how Eckblad will benefit, he's even living with Wilie M. and Jones having Weber and JOsi.
I am almost afraid to think of how Ghost and Haag will be thrown to the wolves next year when they are rookies on the Flyers, who currently don't have a 1 2 or 3 D...too much pressure on them to succeed.
McNabb is in a good place for him to learn and adjust to a new system. He'll be a fine assest on the backend

Agreed. Mentoring is part of being a good organization. Heck, going back to Sean O'Donnell for DD early on too. That's how Detroit was able to stay on top for so long. Moving from one core to the next. That's the type of culture that DL is fostering here in LA it seems.

Great example with Detroit. What player wouldn't benefit from being around Lindstrom. Outstanding Captain and leader, did it the right way. And Babcock knows how to work young players.

Yep, definitely not a core player.
