Alec Martinez Extension Talk

I'm right here. Still don't think anything gets done UNLESS someone else gets moved this year. Feel free to quote me on that all year. Even more so if it's magically less than 4 million.

Given the Canadian dollar situation this issue got all that more interesting.

Unfortunately going to have to agree with you here, likely now we let Stoll walk. However, must do everything we can to keep mr. ****ing game 7.

I saw something the other day where the NHL was still predicting a health rise in the cap, even with the Canadian dollar

Kings will most likely deal Voynov now. I don't see them using 4 puck movers in the top 4 with DD, Muzzin, Martinez and Voynov.

There's no reason to believe that yet. Muzzin, Doughty and Voynov are all solid all-round d-men who excel on the puck-moving side, Martinez is of the same breed but perhaps a little more polarized.

Voynov could still be dealt, but I don't think it would be because the above perspective. I think it would come down to the cap combined with the sentimentality of a fresh start for Slava, regardless of his fate in court.

I was hoping for 3.5 million, but what are you gonna do. He looked good when he had to be a top 4 guy.

Sure the hell hope so. Want to keep this team intact for multiple Cup runs.

Here it is

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/...pects-healthy-rise-in-the-salary-cap/related/

Despite the growing concern of some of the NHL’s big spenders, the league doesn’t expect a weaker Canadian dollar to keep the salary cap from going up next season, as has been reported.

“I expect there to be a healthy rise in the salary cap for next season,†deputy commissioner Bill Daly said last week, per the New York Times. “The Canadian dollar would have to continue to fall in a material way for that to change.â€

I was expecting way more than 4 so I am thrilled with this! OMG look at what Philly gave Streit and MacDonald and they are also USA years and older!

I hope Martinez steps up after this contract, because Muzzin seems to have stepped down after his extension. I would have thought Muzzin could have gotten a little less. Martinez is a little older and has more experience.

I went through and found some guys that make within $100k of $4 million: Cam Fowler, Dennis Seidenberg, Andrej Mezsaros, Mark Giordano (ugh, what a steal), Niklas Hjalmarsson, Marco Scandella (just signed, effective next year, a pretty good comparison for Martinez), Alexei Emelin, Roman Josi, Marc Staal, Christian Ehrhoff, Victor Hedman, Jake Gardiner, John Carlson, Zybnek Michalek, Josh Gorges

I also found some teams where Martinez would be (at least tied with) the highest paid defenseman: Anaheim, Colorado, New Jersey

I also found some terrible players making a lot of money: Sergei Gonchar (4.6), Kyle Quincey (4.25), Matt Niskanen (5.75), Brooks Orpik (5.5)

Matt Niskanen is FAR from terrible. He is probably Washington's best dman at the moment.

Orpik on the other hand, with that contract......

I think some of you are completely overestimating TT and Pearson's next contracts. They will be south of 3m and 2m on short bridge deals, like contracts of comparable and better players. Johansen deal is an outlier. Now, if it's a 6 year deal, that's a different story altogether. I'm not sweating it at all. DL knows the cap and I'm sure has a plan.

....its been 19 games, and in some of which he rushed back from injury. Also, he's played well. How exactly has he stepped down since his extension?

Why?

We have a contract with him and I believe this case does not result in a conviction.

It has nothing to do with his case. It's more to do with the lack of cap space. We don't have enough money to sign everyone if the cap doesn't go up.

With a $70m cap....

The Kings would have to lose Regehr, Stoll, Williams.

And have to sign Pearson/Toffoli to matching $2m or less bridge deals.

Hope to sign Jones, Clifford, Nolan, Shore, and Andreoff to cheaper deals. And pull up Schultz; just to have less than $2m in cap space with 21-22 people signed. That means we have to pull up a cheap young winger like Zykov or Sabourin.

It's very reassuring that our players are all signing long term deals at reasonable rates. Leads one to believe that DL has long term plans and has created an environment and culture that everyone is buying into.

Voynov is signed through 2019. He already has a contract with Kings.

I know that but look at it with a $70m cap:

Gaborik ($4,875,000)--Kopitar ($6,800,000)--Brown ($5,875,000)
Pearson ($2,000,000)--Carter ($5,272,727)--Toffoli ($2,000,000)
King ($1,950,000)--Richards ($5,750,000)--Lewis ($1,525,000)
Clifford ($1,200,000)--Shore ($875,000)--
Andreoff ($605,000)

Muzzin ($4,000,000)--Doughty ($7,000,000)
Martinez ($4,000,000)--Voynov ($4,166,667)
McNabb ($650,000)--Greene ($2,500,000)
Schultz ($850,000)

Quick ($5,800,000)
Jones ($650,000)

Payroll= $68,343,519

Cap Space= $1,656,481 for 21 players.

So you have 2 open spots to fill for one winger and a replacement player(don't really need but good to have):

Zykov--LW/RW ($735,833)
Sabourin--RW ($753,333)
Nolan--RW/C ($850,000)

It will be very tight, and if Pearson/Toffoli/Jones get more money, someone will have to go or the Kings would have to trade for a cheap player and get retention like that one time with Frattin.
