Alec Martinez Extension Talk

Also with A-Mart getting 4m, that tells me Lombardi thinks someone from Manchester will be ready to step in on D next season to replace RR.

Forbort/Bods/LoVerde/Miller. Most likely Forbort will get the chance.

Gravel/Ebert won't be ready, will need another season.

^^^^

There will be about 23 mil tied up in 6 dmen next year, so a 7th from Manchester makes complete and total sense.

To me it's going to be a total wait and see thing.

(For those who are interested in my full take, feel free http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Jason-Lewis/Taking-a-Look-at-the-Martinez-Extension/179/64531)

One thing for certain, the Kings sure can draft and develop. Continues to be a HUGE part to the team success.

Yep, definitely not a core player.

He's a very strong complementary player. He's not a core player though. A core is 2-4 players.

Wait, why are people mad about this contract? How much do you think Alec would get on the open market? Believe me, he'd get $4M/year and then some... This is another good contract, I thought his price would be $3.5M/year, in which he would've taken a slight paycut but I'd like to see him jump into the top 4 instead of being the 2nd PP/3rd pairing DMan, I think he's got what it takes to be more than that. This also looks like it is bye-bye Voynov, unfortunately.

I have no doubt all our RFAs will return, I just think Stoll's gone, for sure. Maybe JWill, unfortunately. I think Nick Shore can take Stoll's spot or we can put Richards there with Andreoff at 4C.

Regehr is probably gone. I didn't understand the Matt Greene contract this past summer and I still don't understand it. I know he's a leader, great locker room guy, has tons of experience but I just don't know if he's worth 2.5M. As someone said earlier, these signings (Muzzin/Martinez) basically means Regehr is gone and DL is comfortable with bringing one of the young guys next year. I'm thinking/hoping it's Forbort but Gravel is so so good.

Gravel has been getting limited D minutes in Mamchester. Many games he is a healthy scratch, and trades roster spots at D with Raine and Ebert. Also, for some games, he's been playing wing while either Raine or Ebert play D. Forbort is always paired with one of these 3, and plays the offside if he plays with Gravel. So, to your reference of Gravel, he's played all right when he plays D, but he is certainly not being fully groomed right now.

To be fair we're overloaded with D prospects and none of them are really head-and-shoulders above another. Have to imagine that our first moves this season will include a d-prospect.

Gravel will need another year, maybe two.

Forbort/Bods/LoVerde/Miller, are really the only guys that could realistically make the Kings roster next year.

Williams is not a core player. End of story. If people consider Williams a core player...Than Stoll/Richards/Greene/Scuds/Mitchell(Those two gone)/Clifford/
King//Muzzin/A-Mart/Voynov are all core players.

The Core is Kopitar/Brown/Doughty/Quick/Carter.

Brown mostly cause he is the Captain, and the Kings are stuck with his contract. That doesn't mean Brown won't return to his 20G 45+P play.

It's just not looking likely for Brown. We may have to accept that Brown is now a 15G 35+P type of guy.

Brown is on pace for 13 goals and 10 assists. So yeah, not likely at all. Could be really disastrous.

Happy to see AMart in the fold for the long run. :yo:

I think it's about in the range dollar-wise with what most people in this forum thought he would get.

Not that I really care, but just looking at the previous handful of posts isn't this thread going off topic?

Chicago pretty much had to rebuild half of their team after they one the cup. The kings will lose 4 or 5 guys off the roster, and replace them with low cost vets, or prospects. But i still like the fact that they got Martinez signed. This team will still contend for cups in the future.

Is he good on penalty-kill and think you will play PK after returning Voynov /or in future? (I ask because fantasy game.) Last year had average SH TOI/G 0:25s, this year has 1:45s.

Is this the first signing thread we've had on this board or something?

Seriously--when a player gets locked up, people will talk about lineup implications. If you don't like it, don't be a part of the thread. It's really simple.

Look - I get what you guys are saying about core vs non-core, but Williams is every bit as important to this team as any other core player is.

Go back and watch the footage from both of the Kings Stanley Cup winning years - you take Williams out of them and they don't happen, PERIOD. If you don't consider that "core", I don't know what is.

He's not a core player. A core player you can overpay for and there's only a couple of them. My core is - Kopitar/Doughty/Quick/Carter. Everyone is expendable for a price.

Yup. Agreed. Dustin Brown is our captain, but he is definitely expendable. I don't consider him apart of our core, unfortunately. Kopitar/Carter/Doughty/Quick. That is your 4-core.

Chicago was able to stay as contenders after 2010's cap hell because they signed all their elite core players, passed up on overpaying many secondary players and then built around the core with solid development and veteran signings.

The Kings will do the same around Kopitar, Doughty, Quick and Carter, tough decisions will be made, and some players will leave, but ultimately if you have an elite core of 4-5 players, which both teams have you will be fine unless you totally crap the bed at the draft table and with FA signings.
