Alec Martinez Extension Talk

He's not a core player. A core player you can overpay for and there's only a couple of them. My core is - Kopitar/Doughty/Quick/Carter. Everyone is expendable for a price.

Sorry, Alec, but I need to make a point here.

You guys are contradicting the whole meaning of 'core'. Williams has been top 4 in points the past 3 postseasons. And MVP last year. Not to mention he has been about as clutch of a player as you will ever find in the postseason. I don't care if he's not making Kopitar or Doughty money. How many other players on this team can you argue that have had similar performances? How many people do you think belong to a core?

Just to make the argument a little easier - I dug up stats for the last 3 postseasons (excluding Quick). Take a gander and tell me that Williams is still not core. I dare you. I double dog dare you.

2011-2014 Postseason Statistics (Kings)

Player | PTS | +/-

Kopitar | 55 | +23
Carter | 51 | +11
Williams | 49 | +21
Doughty | 39 | +6
Brown | 38 | +25
Richards | 37 | 0

Listen - I know Williams is getting older and maybe past his prime, but it will be a sad day for this organization if we lose this guy. Heart and soul player.

^^Very persuasive argument. Mr. Game 7 is, without a doubt, an integral part of the team. Without him, we don't get either Cup.

I think they're using the term "core," however, to describe elite YOUNG guys on which you can build your future. Mainly with respect to long term salary and how it affects the team's cap.

Williams is that grizzled veteran you need to get you over the top, with that extra gear and playoff savvy that you just can't quantify. He's too long in the tooth to be categorized as "core," however.

Bingo....

/ end discussion.

Fair enough...I am just responding to some people who think Williams is more expendable than he may actually be.

Expendable is probably the last word I'd use to describe him.

As for Martinez (getting back on track :D), it's really hard to understate how important it is to have D-men that can effectively put shots on net. Martinez does this in spades, with quick and accurate (if not overpowering) shots. Having a few D-men on the team that can do it really opens things up and keeps defenses honest.

Well in 10 games, Richards' has 2 goals and 1 assist and is a -2...so he is not really making a great case for himself.

Dustin Brown and Jarett Stoll, two guys everyone brings up as playing as equally as crappy as Richards' this year have both picked up there games.

On the flip side though, Jeff Carter has almost the exact same stats in the past 10 games, but I think we can all agree he is more valuable at this point in his career.

I think Carter is def more part of the core than Richards' at this point.

I think Martinez's stock has def risen and this year he has proven to be more valuable the Muzzin.

No one claimed Richards is a core player...There is a Mike Richards thread. Don't turn this one into another one.

Brown and Stoll deserve all the criticism they get(Stoll was awful to start the year).

Brown looked ok to start the year, but the guy is on pace for career lows again.

The important thing is that Martinez is locked up and McNabb is looking better and better each game that goes by. I don't know about you guys, but it's probably a blessing in disguise that Voynov is out right now or McNabb wouldn't be getting any playing time. If he comes back, Sutter is going to have a very difficult decision on who sits. Judging on ice time, it would be Greene right now...but even he is playing pretty good this year. I think by limiting his ice time he is going to be fresher come playoff time.

Very happy that Sutter has done a 180 with Martinez. He didn't used to trust the guy at all and now it couldn't be any more different.

Sutter didn't do a 180 on A-Mart....A-Mart started playing better, and proved to Sutter he could play heavier minutes.

Sutter use to call out A-Mart nightly

reporter "A-Mart is playing well, but only played 14 minutes coach? "

Sutter "A-Mart is a 14 minute defender"....

An interview was done after the day with a cup with A-Mart. A-Mart said he did in fact hear Sutter repeat that in post pressers; and it pissed him off.

But A-Mart went about it the right way, he played harder.

I'm calling BS! AMarts ice time is not about playing better, he isn't playing bad, it is about Sutter not having another option. If Mitchell was still here I'd bet you'd see a Mitchell/Regehr pairing with AMart on the bench.
