Prospect Info: 2024 2nd Overall - Artyom Levshunov

If my math is right, then Rockford as a team has:

88 five on five goals for
116 five on five goals against
-28 5 on 5 goal differential

Which for context, makes Levshunov's -5 on the season not too bad.

Korchinski is rocking a -21 on the other side though.

I'm not going to make any definitive calls on him yet. He's young and has plenty of time to develop. I think he's slid by on physical talent so far and now he's in a place where he can develop the rest of his game. I think some his critics forget how much time Keith and Seabrook spent in the AHL. I just hope they don't rush him up here.
Seabrook played 3 games in the AHL.

I think a lot assume that Levshunov is bad defensively, but he really isn’t. He’s a bit of a loose cannon and loves humping up in the play. But when he actually puts his head down to play defense, he’s not easily moved and knows exactly where to be.

So I guess the prominent thing with him is again, focus.

I think he's got some shit in his neck that we haven't seen much of yet. I mean he was hacking and wacking and fighting a guy in summer workouts. He's so goofy but I think he flips a switch.

I would like to see him stop directing people around the ice. It's my biggest pet peeve on him. He literally points plays out to his teammates and shit. Dude, just worry about yourself. I think he needs to be coached hard. He needs to be our next Hawks coaches whipping boy. From what I've seen he needs out of this "oh we're making mistakes and developing" situation and into getting his ass chewed and getting booed if he plays half ass. That's my read on him at least.

The way he jumps in on the puck aggressively and some other unconventional things he does lead me to think he has to communicate a lot to QB the team. He definitely needs instant coverage because he'll get overly aggressive position-wise in any zone when he sees an opportunity. But that's the big part of his game, flipping the possession and keeping everything going back the other way with occasional chaos.

Your right. For some reason I thought he spent a year in the AHL. Keith spent two complete seasons, though.
He spent an extra year in the whl he probably wouldn't of had because of the lockout and he likely would of been rushed up if not for. Which is the benefit I think a lot of 03 draft picks got.

Would he have really been up for the 2004-05 season as a 19 year old? I'm not saying definitively one way or another, but at that draft position, it's a bit rare to be playing NHL as a teenage defenseman.

Don’t let the haters see you get hot arty. The Levy has Broken!

Everytime I watch him play I am amazed at how so many people are so down on him. I mean just his size, skill and the way he moves is so impressive as a 19 year old defenceman in the AHL.

It's great to see Levshunov turn the corner.

Levshunov and Rinzel are both trending up. If they both hit we have 2 big, right handed D for the next decade+.

I think it has to do with Demidov looking like a 70 point winger next year. I think if we picked 3rd and Demi went 2nd I think no one would care. I think he slots solidly in the 3-6 range in that draft and RD with size and skating and puck skillz do not come along that often. I think the concern is he seems somewhat lacks effort and urgency at times. If he does not grow out of that you are kind of limited on your ceiling.

I guess I just don't understand how people can say things like "Demidov is looking like a 70 point winger next year" and in the same breath voice concerns about Lev. Certainly its possible that Demidov becomes the better player down the road, but I think the way Lev is looking as a 19 year old defenceman in the AHL is just as impressive as Demidov putting up the points he is putting in the KHL. I think people are underestimating just how difficult the AHL can be on a young defenceman.

I don't think there's any reason to think Demidov will be any better than Michkov in his first season and that ain't 70 points.

Anyone else thinking we can't have both KK and Lev?

It kind of feels like because of Lev and the defensive crop as a whole that it is setting up for KK to be the odd man out via trade at some point.

Most of my reservations around the draft were because I didn't like the compete, wasn't consistent, and his play was very erratic. He'd have shift after shift, even full games where he just wouldn't compete hard enough, be lazy in the corners, and make sloppy breakout passes. I still feel like that's on his AHL tape too, but the compete has been a little better, certainly since college.

He's always been really toolsy and those jump off the screen on plays. I still don't think the offense is dynamic and I think he'll end up being a good player but I don't think like his hockey brain is elite and he's gonna turn into Drew Doughty or something.
