I think both Miller and Lundkvist have higher upside.

No they do not.

You know how I'm the most depressing person on this forum, always telling people to stop overrating our prospects? Well, here I'm saying he's underrated.

Elite vision and puck distribution. Terrific puck control when he holds on to it. Maybe doesn't have elite straight speed, though it is NHL level, but does have spectacular edge work and lateral movement. Knows how to get in position for a good shot and then accurately fires it. Great at accepting passes and stopping the puck on the blue line.

Unbelievably smart. Hockey sense beats any tool (look at Gretzky) and he has it in spades. One of the smartest drafted players not the the NHL last year. He's run up points above what his tools would suggest because of his high IQ.

Despite reputation among know-nothings as an offensive player, he's not scoring because of offensive tools, but because of his high IQ, which is just as useful on defense: knowing where to position yourself is important in all zones. His ability to skate or pass the puck out of his own zone are insane, in line with what his hockey IQ would suggest. His edge work and lateral movement are even more useful on defense than offense. He can play defense with both his stick and his body, knowing which works in which situation. That used to be a problem 3 years ago, causing him to fall to the 3rd round, but it is a strength now.

The acquisition of Fox will be viewed as closer to the acquisition of Mcdonagh than Tim Erixon.

I think the big mistake would have been failing to get a potential star player who fell into our laps for way less than he's worth because we got too cute. If we paid slightly more than the minimum Carolina would have traded him for in a deal that we won going away, it's not a big deal.

ESPN, The Athletic, and TSN all rate Fox higher than Miller. I like Miller and think some of those services underrate him, but there is definitely a clear consensus that Fox is a better prospect than Miller.

West Coast bias.

Brooks’ insistence that the Rangers should buy out Shattenkirk is just so ridiculous. It would be a massive hit on the cap and with some level of retention someone will take Shattenkirk. Give me a break. Buying him out would be stupid. If you can’t trade him then keep him. The guy has underwhelmed but Brooks has treated him like garbage in the press and often times it’s undeserved. The guy took a discount and less term to come here, has been ravaged by injuries. Buying him out makes no sense. Especially not this summer.

Brooks knows as much about hockey as i know about building a space shuttle.

People are really mad about giving up 2 2nds for this kid? When do you want to see the Rangers compete, 2025?

0 guarantee either of those picks amount to anything resembling the player we got. Let alone within the next 5 years. Amazing trade by Gorton

. Being a little over dramatic. We all love the player. Nobody is screamed about about the picks.

I think the issue is what to do with the right side of our D. Shattenkirk, DeAngelo, Pionk and Fox are all smallish puck moving D and there's not really one guy that's really reliable enough defensively that you'd be comfortable playing on your penalty kill...

So I think the Rangers should look into a more defensive minded right sided guy with a little bit more size anyway.

So what you're saying is that we need to draft Moritz with the Jets pick?

Was texting back and forth with a couple of hockey guys during work... here's some thoughts on Fox:
  • Production wise-> Probably one of the, if not the most prolific offensive defensemen in the last 20 years of college hockey.
  • Deft passer, and situational awareness. Just oozes hockey IQ. Can process the game at an elite level.
  • Master of deception. Passes, dekes, and moves the puck while breaking down his forecheckers. Can create a transition attack out of nothing.
  • Not an elite skater, but more than good enough to play in the NHL given the other skill sets.
  • Will need to learn to defend with his feet at the NHL level. Reaching and boxing out works in college hockey against tertiary competition, but he's not going to face those types of minutes in the NHL.
  • Make a lot of deft plays that lead to tip ins and rebound chances. Put him out there with good transition wingers and guys that aren't afraid of the net, and he'll create chances by getting pucks up the ice and through to the net.
  • Good decision maker when it comes to establishing line changes, and getting pucks in deep where guys can win a battle. Very smart player who understands how to control the pace of the game by using the ice and his teammates. Leagues ahead of some NHL defensemen in this regard.
  • Knows how to get lost in the picture and re-appear.
  • Question mark is how he handles NHL size and speed, especially and big boys who can carry the puck. There aren't many college kids in his division that fit that profile of player. Will be new to Fox.

The double digit end, specifically as you get closer to the mid-teens, isn’t terribly far off IMO.

I think at that point it makes more sense to retain Kreider through the season and if he has a reasonably productive year you get better value/return trading him at/near the trade deadline than you do including him in a package with a 1st rounder that won't be too many slots behind the one you're trading for...

Agreed. If they are gonna trade kreider then would get more value by not adding him as a package just to move down a few spots

they needed to wait to see what happens with Dallas' 2nd rounder, if it stayed a 2nd rounder they should have insisted on that draft pick or on Tampa's pick and should have used this opportunity to trade Vesey or Namestnikov.

This. If I were a GM I would always insist other teams take less in trades and that players take less on their contract. Why pay more?

Im going to be pissed of they start calling him "Foxey". Hockey clubs are for the most part terrible with their nicknames. It's almost always a "Y" at the end. Of course...Fast being the exception. "Quickie" is a fine nickname.

This kid goes to Harvard. Hoping for something like "Smaaaty-Pants"
Maybe, Adumb. Or dummy. You know, ironically.

Not sure if we'll have the best prospect pool since we are graduating Chytil, Lias and Howden but we are definitely top-5.
