Fair enough, sorry I must have just seen a a few of your negative posts in a row and misconstrued things: apologies, carry on! :handclap:

It's easy to do that, when I'm disappointed in a game I sometimes just fly into this negative rage where I'm just constantly negative. I shake it off though.

Swedes actually got a pt for taking it to OT, so they finished with 5 pts to top the group...BUT T NA pressures them in the third , knowing they need to win in regulation, and if they do...

Swedes finish behind NA in tie breaker and have to hope for a fortuitous result 2morrow

Would it really matter though? Sweden won against both Finland and Russia, shouldn't that be enough to win against any of them in a head-to-head race? Or is it the goals that count even then?

Yeah, but that's the flaw in the tournament. Sweden tied the game and hogged the puck for the extra point. They should have done 3 point regulation wins.

In a three-way tie, it goes by goal differential.

pulling the goalie is a low percentage play, and if the NA team lost in regulation then they'd be out of the tournament right now.

Lundqvist was brilliant in the third, and OT, and to me that's the story of how Sweden got through, not what team NA did or didn't do

sigh, can you guys stop saying this? It's false. Had North America pulled their goalie and given up a goal then would be in almost the exactly same situation as now. If Finland won tomorrow by say 2, then it's a 3 way tie at 1-2, 2 points. It goes to goal difference and North America wins the goal difference. The only way North America doesn't win that goal difference was if Finland won by 7.

There was almost no risk in losing, the only 2 winning scenarios they have now that they wouldn't have had if they lost in regulation was if Finland wins in OT, or if Finland wins by 7 or more.

Listening to MacKinnon, he didn't know they needed a regulation win. That tells me the coaches didn't know either. That's a big fail.

First off Suomis not beating Russia ...very unlikely anyway...second, even late in 3rd there wasn't that urgency...It should have been made clear to everyone on the team --- YESTERDAY --- that the only way to ensure we make it to semis boyz is to beat these guys in regulation...

Clearly MacK did NOT understand this...ergo either the coaches knew and stupidly didn't make that clear to their young charges...or, as seems more likely, nobody on the whole staff figured it out...

STUPID NO MATTER HOW ANYONE TRIES TO SPIN IT!

Because that other team failed to take an OT point in its loss. How is that unfair? It's just like in the NHL.

Because the Olympics/Worlds don't work that way. This is actually the only tournament that does.

So IIHF rules > NHL rules? I disagree.

Also, if you want to talk about unfair, how about Sweden playing two games in 24 hours while NA gets a full day's rest?

They all played 3 in 4. Team NA had less rest than Russia in their game (Team NA played the late game).

Most people prefer 3 point regulation games. It rewards teams for trying to win in regulation, rather than clogging up the neutral zone for the extra point.

That wouldn't have changed anything, even if I agree with you (a team winning in OT/SO shouldn't get as many points as winning in regulation, especially when the loser gets 1 pt).

Sweden would've ended with 7 points (3+3+1)
NA would have 5 points (3+2)

Russia would still beat NA with a regulation win over Finland (3+3). NA would advance if Russia doesn't win in regulation though.

McDavid needs to work on his finish, he had glorious chances in this must-win game and couldn't put it away. He's faster and has better hands than a young Crosby but Crosby's finishing ability was much better.

It wouldn't have changed this outcome. However, teams would actually try to win in regulation then.

The Auston Matthews chants in OT were amazing. He's already a beloved figure in Toronto.

Darn right he is. He could be the best player on the team almost immediately in his rookie season, we've never had a player who was this good at this age.

He would be so lethal if he had better finish.

Yeah I agree with this. He seems raw in a lot of ways which is what makes me think his ceiling could possibly be higher than Crosby's, Crosby seemed to know what worked in the NHL and how to finish more early, but still was arguably not even a better player in his rookie year than McDavid is. By the end of the year though Crosby probably had the edge, but we will have to see this season if McDavid can pull out a sophomore season like Crosby's.

Gotta love afternoon games on a week day.... At least was able to watch the 3rd/OT.

I bet people on the west coast missed the entire game.

Pretty unfortunate that McLellan never bothered to check the rules before the game. Because otherwise he would of realized that they would of been in an identical situation had they lost this game by 1 or 2 goals, and instead would have pulled the goalie to try to win in regulation.
