Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

The ducks have interesting young pieces but Rantanen would have to agree to sign there before they made the deal in order to get 8 years. Just have a hard time believing he’d leave Carolina and sign with Anaheim right now you might as well wait until the summer at that point

If it's a non-contender, it feels more like a trade Chicago would make. And I could see the package back including Seth Jones as a Burns replacement on the top pair.

Anaheim is interesting, but I don’t see them offering up a McTavish, more like a Zegras + package, which doesn’t really move the needle that much.

Hopefully it’s all moot and he signs, but I still don’t see Rantanen sticking around, so id rather get something for him than watch him walk, but that’s just me.

Zegras is only 2 years older than McTavish and has accomplished more at the same ages. I realize there's a #3 pick vs #9 pick going on here, but Zegras moves the needle more than you suggest.

Getting back Zegras would actually be closer to getting a younger Necas back out of the Necas deal, which would be a very good outcome if they can't sign Rantanen.

Seems like Friedman is reaching in saying they went after high end UFAs last summer so maybe they’re ready and willing to get a head start now with the cap rising and Rantanen potentially available

Friedman said this morning he believes the offer is around what MacKinnon makes so 12.6
 
I tend to believe Friedman more than most of the other insiders at this point. When he's said a bit above the $12.5 mark but not hitting that $13-14, in my mind I've thought either the $12.6 for Mack or maybe as high as $12.96 since players are weird. If he shows interest in whatever we've presented as far as the initial offer and our pitch to him, I'm sure we have room to move up.

If we're as desperate to keep him as we should be, we shouldn't be offering him less than what he'd make in FA. Some team out there WILL give him $14 mil/year. Our offer should reflect that.

That's a matter of philosophy. Some guys only care aboue AAV. Some guys have been known to care about total contract value which we can match or exceed with lower AAV with the extra year. I don't think what's been reported is insulting or anything.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they could Gibson too at a discounted price there isn’t much of a market for him it seems
 
Zegras makes sense as one of their annual buy-low swings. The Canes have the draft and prospect capital to do it (and seeing what Kakko got, it probably won't be a huge package) and don't need to deal a ton of salary to fit the contract in.
 
I mean if we think we f***ed up letting Necas go, Zegras is an obvious target for us

I've come around to being open to Zegras but really depends on what we'd have to give up. He's not as good as Necas and as a lefty provides less value for us. I'd consider picks/prospects not named Nikishin, Morrow, Arty, Nadeau but not sure why Anaheim would want future scraps like that rather than just keeping him.

As for Gibson, it feels kind of inevitable, but I don't see why we would have any interest in doing that before the offseason.

*Rumored offer. I have it on good authorities from a source in Quebec the offer is less than Aho makes to keep the salary structure in place and with our knowledge Dundon so cheap..
