Good Morning Everyone, as I wake up this and read a few more things, I am even more excited... I think this kid in time is going to be a baller.

Elite Defensive Defensemen with Size who can skate (possibly right now) and I'm not worried about the offensive side, I have no doubt he will develop that as well... I truly believe this dude can be the young franchise defenseman we have be dying to get since #5 retired.

Bring on BPA Forward at the Start of Round 2...

Checked those combine results:

2019 NHL Combine results: Top 10 at each drill - Sportsnet.ca

- Seider was 2nd-4th best at Aerobic Fitness VO2max test.
- And also 2nd longest wingspan from top prospects after Vlasic.

So, good basics to play for big minutes and that wingspan enables bigger puck-control area and also bigger area for effective stick defence.

Very nice tools to have for your top defenceman.

I appreciate some of the optimism. Personally I'm still in the "I don't know what to think and feel" zone. On the o e hand there is stuff to like in Seider's scouting report. I see the smarts and skating ability in what little video there is. I just find it hard to be excited about a pick I've barely seen when there were a lot of guys I felt strongly have great NHL futures

Trust me, it's just better to trust scouts who will do this for their living.

I was surpriced too, because I walked on the same mine and didn't thought Seider as and option for us, because we didn't have a pick on his "rank-range". But that "rank-range" kind of disappeared after 5th overall.

I was totally surpriced after hearing the name, but who cares. Like Kotkaniemi was the surprise pick at last year, and how well that turned out for Canadiens? Same could very well happen to us with Moritz Seider.

Seider and Kakko were those only two players, who managed well against men at World championships. Hughes struggled and nobody else didn't participate.

I mean you can use that same appeal to authority to claim it's a bad pick because the consensus had him later. You have to trust our scouts in particular for that to hold, and I don't. However I do like what I see in Seider. It's not like Rasmussen where I felt like I knew the player well and just didn't like the tools. With Seider I just don't know, but I won't blindly trust our scouts either.

Does anyone know where to find any full game recordings of him in DEL or IIHF? I can't seem to find anything besides WC games that YouTube won't let me play (not available in my country).

Also how often do you does a big player with good skating and is lauded for his athleticism and intelligence not pan out? Honestly im getting hyped for this pick draft position and value be damned.

I'm surprised by his prospect thread in the draft board. Someone said everyone was laughing at this pick but all I see are high praise of him and the selection. Even from leaf and ava fans. Also three people called this pick two weeks ago.
This was much less of a blindside than Cholowski bc of those rumors about this pick. When they called Cholowski he must have been the only D prospect I hadn't researched or read about in depth, I was shocked. Both have in common being big risers leading up to the draft though.

FWIW, don't forget we all wanted to crucify Ken Holland when he took Tyler Bertuzzi.

You better believe people would be grabbing their pitchforks if Holland made this pick! Since it was Yzerman, the response is more reserved.

I was at the LCA watching and the air went out of the building when Seider's name was announced. I'm pretty sure my face was glazed over with disbelief as well. After a little time to let everything sink in I think people will come to like this very surprise pick.

Yeah I'll be honest, I'd be more upset if Holland was GM, but Stevie Y gets a few of these before they're too infuriating. I will say his first round does not have a great record and Seider reminds me a lot of Slater Koekkoek who he also reached for

I originally was shocked by this pick mostly because I hadn't really considered him in the top 6 range, I was looking a lot at the guys who went 3,4,5 and a few who went 7-12 last night.

After doing more reading and research, I am liking this pick more and more. The kid has a large and robust toolbox by all accounts.

Here is to hoping he hits his max potential and has a strong development over the next couple of years!

As scouting gets better and better I think one of the last avenues where players can really get underscouted/overlooked is when you're dealing with situations of 17-18 year olds playing against men in some of the 2nd tier Euro leagues (NLA/DEL/Czech/etc).
This kid was 17 for most of the season and if I'm reading reports right he finished the year with 10 points in the last 28 games including playoffs which is pretty good, along with being a + player on a championship winning team and then adding 2 goals in 5 games at the WHC, another nice accomplishment for that level of competition at his age.

One has to wonder where he would have been ranked had he played in WHL or something all year.

I haven't posted since last night, so I have many things.

My youtube scouting had him lumped in with everyone else that people wanted, so I'm perfectly ok with the pick.
You can't just magically trade down. Somebody needs to want to trade up.
If you like a guy, you take him. You don't trade down and hope he's still there.
On the flip side, Yzerman is not infallible. He's had plenty of bad draft picks and didn't win anything with the team of hall of famers he was gifted in Tampa.

Honestly I’m not as unhappy about this pick as I was initially, especially given the run on D, but I think it points to the fact Yzerman likely doesn’t think much about the young d men in the system.
Its also about type.

Hronek isn't defensively awful but is an offence first guy. Lindstrom is a 2 way guy who's absolute ceiling appears to be middle pairing. Bowey has some promise, but has proven he's not a first pairing guy. Kaski is an offence first unknown quantity who might become a bigger finish Rafalski or might be in Finland in months. Our senior right D (or those who can play right) will be out of the league in 2-3 years or sooner. Regula shows some promise, but needs to take massive steps to be a top 4 D, which seems unlikely, and Saarijarvi hasn't shown much a the pro level.

Our others are leftys, and Cholo is a great passer but isn't defensively great, McIsaac has shown a great two way game, but lets not forget Sproul and Outlette were award winners in the CHL. Who else is there? Hicketts? Setkov? Kotkansalo? Barton? All long shots.

So our best young D are either smaller offence first or have never played against men or in Lindstrom's case appear to project as bottom pairing guys. This pick represents a D man who has pro experience, has size and is noted for pro level defence with untapped offensive potential. That instantly makes him unique in our system, but at first description compares well with Hronek at the same age, only bigger and with a more defensively focused game.

Been following this guy since Owen Sound picked up his CHL rights and as a German hockey fan - and I think Red Wings fans should be really excited about this kid. He was for my money the #2 D in the draft, and you only have to look at his end of season play with Mannheim and at the Worlds. The kid plays well beyond his years.

I have a hunch that the Oilers would have picked Seider at 8 over Broberg too. Say what you want about Broberg's physical traits, but Seider is about the same size and is significantly more polished. He played, and eventually excelled, at a higher level than Broberg did this season.

Now if the Red Wings could do Owen Sound a solid and assign him to the OHL next season, that would be terrific. However, I fully expect him to keep playing in Germany, he's one of the rare talents that should hold a Top 4 spot on Mannheim all season.

Hockey iq, size and skating. That's a solid foundation for a top pairing dman. I had him going 9 to Anaheim. Sure, I would have liked Yzerman to fall back and taken him but that's easier said than done and you never know if another team has him high.

I'm starting to like this pick more. He projects as a composed, defensively sound, minute-munching defenseman. We have Cholo, Hronek, and even McIsaac who have shown offensive talent.

We already have Veleno at C who just had a fantastic year and a strong list of forwards to choose from at 35.

People were mocking us and laughing in the main draft board but that’s it
