I don’t recall them having a very strong opinion of Kotkaniemi at all. Or at least not one that was public.

Right. Nobody connected us with Kotkaniemi but we were connected with Hayton.
Could a major part of that been because Montreal was so heavily spoken to wanting him? We didn't even get a lot of news about the coyotes and Hayton until a few days before the draft, maybe a week? I think most had us taking a D, Tkachuk, or Wahlstrom.

I’ll find the draft video. I remember Chayka being relieved when Montreal took Kotkaniemi.

Oh I remember it, you could also see how pumped he was talking about Hayton. Montreal helped the optics of taking Hayton 5th. I'm just saying that because he wanted Hayton rather than Kotkaniemi, kept that quiet for so long, followed by Montreal winning 3rd overall, we were never even part of that conversation. Basically a byproduct of circumstance and secrecy.

The draft always has secrets. It’s like playing poker. In small towns we notice a lot around the rink.

In the Soo rumour was that Montreal had Hayton and Kotk pretty much tied. Ottawa tweeted a picture on draft day of Breakfast with Hayton. Vancouver and Chicago had scouts all over him since Christmas. The Buffalo scout was flying in to the Soo all the time until they won the lottery. We hadn’t heard much about the Coyotes, but clearly they were doing the same.

My point is teams do their homework. They do their best assess the player the kid projects to be. . Not which kid will show best in 3 months later in preseason.

I can tell you there was next to zero Hayton talk in Montreal. Fans wanted Zadina while insiders expected Kotkaniemi or Tkachuk with a dark horse in Hughes. Maybe behind closed doors there was talk on Hayton but everything I read up to the draft he wasn't an option for Montreal.

And yet Bergeron flew to the Soo during playoffs? Why do you think he was there?

Antoine Vermette has played over 1,000 games and averaged about .5 ppg in those 14 seasons. Not quite eye-popping and probably never a legitimate top line center, but very good. Very good is what you're hoping to get from a 5th overall pick.

Vermette was also an instrumental part of the best season this sad franchise has ever had in Arizona, so if Vermette is Hayton's ceiling, I'll be thrilled.

Yeah, but he may have been totally sure "we don't get Kotka. We don't have to spend so much time with him. He goes to Montreal" - and others might have been like "that's surprisingly unprofessional". Well, he might be to professional for this scenario, but can you rule it out?

Is that true that Barett Hayton is injured?

He was in concussion protocoll a few days ago, but Tocchet was all "oh, it's just a formality" when they talked with him about it. If anyone has any updates, they'll probably add them.

I assume you are trying to be funny, but I don't think anyone is laughing about an 18-year-old kid getting a suspected concussion.

To Mr. Moosemeisters defense: if it really just was protocol, and no real injury, I think we laugh of it.

Let's hope it was really nothing then?

Thanks for your answers. When did it append?

There's an article here, https://eu.azcentral.com/story/spor...ould-mean-trouble-arizona-coyotes/1385302002/

with the text:
"Although not expected to be part of the Opening Night roster, 2018 first-round pick Barrett Hayton also missed practice and is currently in concussion protocol following a hit he took in a game Tuesday. Tocchet said Hayton felt better on Friday and should return to the ice soon."

This looks a bit more serious than the interview I saw with Tocchet (somewhere), where he didn't look very worried, as mentioned above. But not to bad.

Haven't been following the preseason that closely. Has Hayton been performing at a level that justifies the decision to take him over Zadina (or Hughes)?

I was very disappointed when Zadina fell and we took Hayton instead. It was definitely a reach but some people also thought the Keller pick was one too. I'm hoping Chayka is a genius, and that he hasn't become overconfident after nailing the Keller/Chychrun draft.

In general, I have the impression most fan-bases gets disappointed with their high lottery-picks at first. Detroit is disappointed with Zadina. Buffalo is disappointed with Dahlin! Montreal is really happy with Kotkaniemi though, so it's not all over. Ottawa also seems to really like Tkachuk.

But the extreme expectations must be dragged down somewhat most of the time. Really, to expect 18 year olds to come in and turn into hockey-gods is to expect to much. Most important is Zadina hasn't started very well either, and that's the one so many talked about. Kotka and Tkachuk was out of reach anyways.

I was livid when we didn't take Zadina, but I've mellowed since the Draft and, with the recent slate of injuries to our centers, now realize that if Hayton gets anywhere near where Chayka expects him to, he'll be worth the pick. I feel like you can get scoring wings a lot easier than you can get a true two-way center, and while I love Zadina's attitude I am not sure he can maintain his brisk points pace at the NHL level.

Anyway, the denouement will take years to happen, so any toldjaso's will have to wait a while... :D

I remember two things from the first round of the draft...After the Coyotes selected Hayton, I said "who?"; and I remember Craig Button saying that after the first 2, the difference between the next 13 picks or so was negligible.

If you look at the last 10 drafts, I'd imagine picks 5 to 15 support Button's comments about this draft.
