I'm just not gonna trip on it. It happened, we picked him. We hope for the best just like every other team is. Wheeler was a reach in the top 5. Zadina could be boom or bust, same with Hayton.

Not worth stressing on it anymore, happy to have what looks to be a solid natural center prospect. Hope we never see another top 5 pick any time soon.

Except for when we barely miss the playoffs and win the lottery this year.

To be fair, Zadina isn't a great skater either, albeit a little better than Hayton. This last year was the year to take a Dman. Hughes, Bouchard or Dobson...this year is the year to take a C, there are a lot of them.

You have to assess each player independently. Coyotes did that and came to the conclusion that Hayton would be more useful than anyone else available. I'm glad they weren't concerned about next draft when it came time to make the pick.

Maybe Zadina will be Vanek and Hayton will be Carter. Maybe it’s the 2003 draft all over. Carter was already a late riser to be picked at 11th. If he’d have gone 5th, over Vanek, people would’ve flipped out. Vanek probably would’ve been scooped up 6, 7, or 8 despite those teams wanting D and looking at Suter, Coburn or Phaneuf.

Vanek came in and made a huge goal scoring impact in the pro ranks right away. Carter spent two more seasons with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds before making the Flyers. Vanek looked much better early on. Carter’s overall impact has been undeniably greater and has clearly been more effective despite all of the early flash that Vanek had.

There’s my optimism moment. :)

Let’s also pretend it somehow applies to Strome v Marner. Haha.

Sorry to ask, I am such a confused person. How is it with Hayton, is he cleared to play, is he sent to OHL, or what? :)

Hayton is like you are playing Dungeons and Dragons and decide to balance all of your stats out. A guy like that almost always makes it to the NHL but whether he becomes an impact player depends on how much his offensive game matures with his defensive game.

Guys like that can be a risk because if they take an injury or a step back offensively, you might find yourself with a serviceable player but nothing like what he was drafted on expectation for. Arizona had Kyle Chipchura for years. He wasn't drafted to be a bottom six guy, but after his injury, he could still make an NHL team but he couldn't be the top six two way complete centre the Canadiens drafted him for.

He needs to get as much PP time as possible, even if the Soo play him on the wing. He needs to develop an offensive edge before he touches the AHL let alone the NHL. But I got respect for the system in the Soo and think they will do him right. He stays healthy, stays focused, never neglects his need to create offence, I see him as the kind of guy you can put against the other teams best line on the road and know he will shut them down and get the puck in the net.

Curious why we haven't sent down Hayton. Is he still injured? I wonder if they're keeping him around for his recovery as we did for Perlini's hand injury when he was in junior.

I guess there's also a small possibility he could get the 9-game look given our injuries at center.

If he hasn’t played since concussion protocol that’s a sign.

This is about teaching him about what it takes to be a pro. I have no doubt he’ll be a nhl player. I just don’t know yet if he’s a 2/3C or a 1/2C. That’s what we are hoping to see this year in the CHL.
