OTOH, the key when rebuilding is to be able to suck enough to really get top talent. We should get a shot at that this season. I am not sold on that the timing would have been right 2 years earlier than we started it.
The problem I see is that this:
(1) We have zero room to try to find any pieces for the future to play in on the blueline. And we have three HUGE commitments on the blueline for THREE more years. How will that synch with the rebuild? Shattenkirk is already way into Beaver territory. Anyone with half a brain knew he would be heading there, but still its like a surprise. Lets say we get Hughes now. FOA pick plays right away and usually does it fairly well. Lias, Chytil, Howden and co are getting older. If we can get a top talent in this draft we should have a team that should be able to grow together and build something in 2-3 years. But we won't even remotely be close to it due to the horrible commitments we have on the blueline.
What you are seeing is the 5th most expensive blueline in the NHL. Today. The game is getting faster. These guys will be as higly paid, while getting slower, while the game is getting faster, for three more full seasons. That is not great.
2. While we have the horrible commitments on the blueline -- we don't have a ton of guys on the way up to replace them. We will have zero room to find any bargains because we can't play them. Someone like Butcher would never sign with us due to all the contracts we have.
3. If it drags on 4-5-6 years we face a very high risk of completely ruining the kids we have.
Gorts MUST start to clear the mess he has created on the blueline.
