Point is Buch doesn't show any improvement from last year, when he was benched a lot under AV. And this seems to continue with Quinn.

Brooks is calling him out, and I have to agree.

The season started 10 days ago, but sure... Buch has not shown any improvement. By that logic, Zuccarello has taken a nosedive and should just retire hahahaha

Anyway as far as the tank. I don't want my team just going through the motions. I think it's dangerous not to put out your best effort towards winning.

On those who want us to lose every game so as to get Hughes or Kakko. I don't know what you guys are bothering watching the games at all for. I haven't got that level of masochism.

They've put forth a great effort every game, often against top competition, usually led by the youth. Not sure where the effort comment is going.

To the 2nd thing...some of us like hockey and have patience so we can study the individual players, enjoy each games little plays and we still enjoy ourselves. It's really not that crazy of a concept

He should be putting it together more than he has. I dont think he works hard on all aspects of his game. I see way too many low effort shifts from him. He's not talented enough to be as disengaged as he frequently is.

Or maybe... He's just not the player people want him to be. Not every player is a sparkplug who skates at 100% every shift.

That "or maybe" makes no sense for you to say for many reasons. People expect him (like all NHL players) to be a competent NHL player. Now to be that, he has to have exceptional talent or some degree of talent along with a willingness to constantly improve in many aspects of his game. If someone is mad that he isn't elite yet, your comment would make more sense. But we'renot discussing him being elite. Were talking about him having a combination of abilities and effort that justifies him having a top 9 roster spot. I'm seeing snippets of some of that but way too infrequently.

I assume by that you mean Zucc :DD

Anyway, Avs on Tuesday and Caps the next day. both solid teams. I guess Georgiev will play one of these, he wasn't exactly sharp in his first one. Should we expect 1-6? Ugh...I really hope not.

No, you Norwegian baby. I wasn't talking about Zuccarello. Because he's been gliding a bit too much this season. By sparkplug I mean guys like Dorsett, Callahan, Brown, Reaves etc who have to give 100% effort to make it.

really I think we are too focused on him and are noticing every little thing negative he does without seeing the positives. I'm not sure why but we always seem to have a whipping boy in this fanbase. Right now its Staal
I’m sure you and I aren’t the only ones noticing it, but yeah. This is very true and probably needs to be mentioned every-so-often.
I’m also sure lots of people agree Staal is not as bad as people make him out to be. I think his real fault is that he’s an old-school type. He plays defensive defense, if that makes any sense. I think the modern style is more possession-minded. Which I would agree, is better. It’s clearly better to have the puck and be going forward than to be on your heels defending. No matter how well you’re defending. But staal seems to be trying to change and regardless, those defensive defenders still have value killing penalties, for example and going up against top forward lines.

It looks like Hank and Staal are handling the media so I see why they wont bench him and really I think we are too focused on him and are noticing every little thing negative he does without seeing the positives. I'm not sure why but we always seem to have a whipping boy in this fanbase. Right now its Staal, last was Girardi, keep going down the line. This is a nothing year, a year about learning to play the right way and helping the kids become pros by either mentoring them or having them play another year in Hartfors. Staal playing actually helps all that.

What positives?

He positively sucks but that’s about it. The highlight of his season so far is a forced pass that went off a skate and went right to Zibanejad.

Tony Amonte was alive during the Civil War.

I know better than to keep arguing with you, and I'm not — this is just funny.

If anything, Montreal looks like the team that "could surprise" that some swore the Rangers would be.

We may not be Detroit, Ottawa bad but we aren't far off. This defense sucks and the offense is going to struggle to score the entire year. This shouldn't come as a surprise, they struggled last year with a deeper roster under AV, who for all his faults almost always had this team scoring at will.

Henrik is also not going to sport a .950ish Sv percentage for the entire season. Once an injury or two hit the offense, this team is going to sink.

People need to stop complaining about the officiating. If a bad call is the difference between losing and not losing a game to Edmonton, then you didn't deserve to win anyway.

One thing I can't figure out is how we are so notably worse at completing a first pass than basically any other team in the league. Only Arizona, Edmonton,Detroit, and Buffalo really compare. What I can't figure out is, is it the forwards, the defensemen, the quality of the ice (seriously bad at MSG just based on watching around the league), or is it a team that is still adjusting to a brand new system without clear roles or steady lines?

If it's the latter two more than the former, then we're closer to MTL by year's end. But you may be right that our defensemen are just that bad. That first pass makes such a difference in 2018.

Yeah, no. That’s a piss poor excuse for Buchnevich and players like him - primarily because, especially at this level, there’s really no valid reason not to be fully engaged every shift.

Different players have different styles. Jagr was never the fastest player, nor the player with the most energy/hustle etc. But he still made it work. Buchnevich to a lesser degree is similar in the way he moves. There are certain players like Hagelin for instance, who made a career out of being the fastest player on the team. Great for him, but that doesn't apply to every player.

I just have a problem with people claiming players aren't trying hard enough. That's BS. At this level, players always give everything they can otherwise they won't be in the NHL. But with 15-20 shifts a game, you have to pick and choose when to go all out and when to preserve your energy a bit. Every smart player does this.

Buchnevich has the opportunity to be a top line player on this team sitting there on a silver platter and he continues to float. In one sentence you say players are always giving their all and the next you say they need to preserve energy. The truth, perhaps, is somewhere in the middle but you also wouldn’t have to go into these contortions if Buchnevich wasn’t just going through the motions lately. You can’t watch these first few games and declare he’s trying to make an imprint on the game. He’s floating. Period. He needs to step it up and I don’t see the need to make excuses about it

I guess we will see what happens in the remaining 77 games of the season.

Yeah, so, I’d be more inclined to accept such an answer without the 100+ games of inconsistency already under his belt

Last year was his first full year in the league and you don't think there's still adjustments he is capable of making? He's 23 and with a great organization that gives their players every resource imaginable to improve. I'm confident he'll step up.

Well right now, it’s hard to imagine a worse group in the league.

Skjei is a 2nd pairing guy, Smith has been okay and tops out as the same, McQuaid is a bottom pairing guy playing on the top pair, Shattenkirk has been ass and Staal has been Staal. Then we have DeAngelo who the coaches refuse to play, Claesson who has looked pretty good (2 games, we’ll see how this plays out) and Pionk who has not been good.

Our best players at the position aren’t here yet, but for the short term this is going to really suck, especially if this is what we get from Shattenkirk. I’m not going to write him off yet but there are red flags abound.

We need/deserve Jack Hughes

They can't connect on East-West passes.

If I was Quinn, I'd drill the shit out of this. The showing the first 5 games from a passing perspective has been crap.

What surprises me is that most Ranger fans still believe that we have a solid offensive line.

Let’s be honest: we overhype our players. We are simply not a skilled hockey team. Quinn has A LOT of work to do. We work hard, because we lack talent.
