So many NJ fans were sleeping on how good this pick was, given the polls we did.

The "oozing talent" cliche applies here.

STI was a huge fan of this pick, one of his favorites of ours from the draft. If the board isn’t paying attention to his opinion idk what they’re doing here…

IIRC he only thinks Casey will be like a bottom pair guy. The potential is there to be far more than that. Casey is sick. Should've been picked somewhere in the first minimum

Will Scouch - Scouching report had Casey rated top 20 I think or even higher pre draft.
He was very high on him , but more so as a huge boom or bust type. I don’t see the bust potemtial though where I think he can still be a good to very good D man even if he doesn’t hit his ceiling. Scouch thinks otherwise.

I’m old and somewhat skeptical of smaller defenders. Ty Smith didn’t change my mind on the issue. Sure there are some that can overcome physical limitations but they tend to me really good like Quinn Hughes or Adam Fox etc. Does Casey have that sort of potential? I have a tough time seeing a 5’10” 175 pound defender be more than a fringe guy if he’s a good but not great player. He has years to grow his game so hopefully he can reach his full potential.

First of all - Scouching live in his own universe. He loves some thing, he miss some thing. You should definitely watch and listen him if you are interesting in prospects, but you can't use it as foundamential.
Where Casey can show himself he is doing it now. But he isn`t small defenseman who play big. He will face absolutely new challange for himself in NHL. How he will escape the zone under pressure, how he will play against big forwards on breakaways, how he will win puck battles on the boards in both zones, what he will actually do on the slot. I think he is better skater than Ty but he isn`t much faster skater. Like his open ice game, how he feel pace of the game without the puck, very good hands, he can be very good in transitioning.

I was happy about this pick because we got really talented player. But again. He isn`t guaranteed NHL player. Like evreybody loves to tell - big ceiling, low floor. I gon`t think floor is really low, because if he will develop some parts of his game, he will make some NHL career. But NHL game is NHL game and 75% of it is what is going on under pressure and along the boards. He is a great prospect to have, will see how he will transfigure it out.

Smaller guys obviously will have that label but I think he could be like Sam Girard(he was taken 47th in his draft year). Casey is a tremendous skater which Smith never was too, and skating is paramount in todays league.

I agree i that his skating is lacking . But only in some areas. He is very elusive and shifty , but his straight line speed and first few strides need more work. If he can be more explosive with his first few strides… look out. For now , he is lookig very promising and I hope he can continue to impress. First pairing with Hughes (in Michigan ) would be very cool to see unless Luke continues to play the right side , then it won’t happen

I don't disagree but I feel like we've realized now straight line speed is pretty overrated in terms of "skating," It's really about 4 way mobility and edges. I think he looks amazing in the clips I've seen on this front, especially with the puck on his stick, but it's also the case that basically a generation of elite skaters are now entering the league and taking the league to the next level.

Like 20 years ago Casey would be a superstar I reckon, or at least Tobias Enstrom level contributor. In any case, a great pick, looking forward to seeing him grow.

I mean, let's be honest, most people here don't know much about these prospects :P Like I wrote a while ago, Casey used to be considered an A tier prospect a long with Nemec and Jiricek. I still am in shock the devils managed to get him tbh.

I was shocked but I too wasn't too high on his potential and saw him more as a future 5-6 d-man. This is mainly due to him not progressing much as a prospect. The next few years in Michigan could definitely change things.
