I believe that Jeff Gorton should approach Marc Staal and his agent privately and ask Marc to waive his his NMC/NTC. If agreed and there are no interest from other clubs then send him to Hartford ala Wade Redden.
As a player/coach he could have a very positive influence on our developing defensemen.
The sweetener would be that when his contract runs its course he will always have a job with the organization.
If they do not waive then sit him every night.
Either way it will open a spot for one of our developing prospects.

There's a better chance of me playing Defense for the Rangers this season than this ever happening.

I ****ing hope we go 0-82. We absolutely NEED an elite player on this team to lead all our young talent that isn't here yet to multiple Stanley cups. And this is our biggest chance to get that guy and his name is Jack Hughes. Tank this season, it will be worth it. I will not hold it against the coach.

This isn't the NFL where you sometimes need to win 0 games to get the #1 overall pick. You realize that Buffalo won 25 games last year? Why the f*** would you want us to win 0?

Just what the vast majority here has been clamoring for.

Would you be happier if the team came out 5-0, then was shit rest of the season but with weaker lottery potential?

Think of rebuild as a building. The building will take 3-4 for completion. Now its day 3 into the build and all you see is construction tape and 25 con ed guys staring at a hole.

And you stand outside shouting “this is not a building!”

Zucc was great for us for a while there. He wasn't an elite scorer because he had no shot but he had near elite passing. He would make Gretzky like passes almost regularly. I don't know what happened to him. He can't even make a simple pass anymore. He's not that old. It's as if he's disinterested because the team is going nowhere.

I wouldn't say he was ever really elite. He's had 3 very good seasons under AV.

He's not a big guy and maybe he just can't win those board battles anymore.

It’s NOT because people like u keep thinking this is about this season and OR next.

It isn’t and when u decide to wake up to that fact you will know why he isn’t bought out

But... I digress

I'm not so sure (and I'm someone who has been saying for a while that Staal won't be bought out).
If Hajek can continue his strong start with the Pack, and show that he's ready for NHL hockey next season, his ELC and Staal's buyout almost perfectly coincide meaning that you you reduce your defensive core cap-hit while improving its play. And then when Hajek needs a raise there's only one year left on the Staal buyout at pretty minimal money.

I'd be very surprised if all 3 of Smith, Shatty and Staal are on the roster for opening night next season

You realize that if we do that we still only end up with an 18% chance of getting the 1st overall pick right?

We could be like Colorado 2 years ago or Buffalo the McDavid year and be historically bad and last place by a wide margin and still not get the first pick.

This is the correct course of action, they're not going to waive him. As much as his play deserves it and as much as I can't wait until hes no longer on this team, Staal doesn't deserve that. Just make him an extra. We don't need the cap space this year.

Play Hajek instead. I'll live with the mistakes of a 20 year old who can probably learn at this level while being pretty good over watching Staal make the same mistakes over and over again while being too slow to keep up.

You're arguing with the wrong person if you think I care about this season. I'd rather see another young dman in the lineup than continue to watch Staal stink up the joint. He has no future with the team.

Buffalo ended up with Eichel so that didn't exactly turn out poorly for them.

Regardless, I'd rather pick 4th than 9th.

Thank you. This early in the season we should all as fans be rooting for a win every night.
Yeah no thanks, I'm not dellusional. This team as presently constituted is going nowhere and any success they have hurts the long term chances of this team having a serious shot at winning championships. If you don't see that you are going to suffer a lot these next few seasons. I notice a lot of Ranger fans not just here but in general are in complete and total denial about our present roster and circumstances. Not only that, are in complete and total denial that every single team in our division has 2 or 3 elite players and we have ZERO.

He's fine, had a lot of great passes against the Preds, and some last night. But the entire team was a mess in this game...honolulu hockey.

And offense won’t die on Hajek ‘s stick.

Thought the Rangers looked fine. For a developing team. I would like them to grow more of a spine though. They are getting beat up by cynical vet opponents. And not fighting back. which is one reason I want de Angelo playing every game. Staal has been fine but he is soooooo soft. Mcquaid even got beat up. Come on. I can live without the wins but need some fighting spirit at least.

Game is progressively getting faster by the year.

Game changes every decade. Look at the 70s compared to the 80s compared to the 90s etc. The immobile power forwards like Bates Battaglia and Mike Leclerc became extinct when they went from the Dead Puck Era to the post lockout. Some of the linebackers that played in the league when it rebooted in 2005, they wouldn't be able to keep up today. Half the teams from 2005 to 2012 would be three feet behind the play.

Zuc isn't slow but he's not naturally fast. He's very similar to a player like Callahan in that there's a hustle and a motor to his game. When that motor gets old, it makes most of the other elements of his game not as effective.
