Pull a Tampa Bay and trade 2 first rounders or even an entire draft class for someone who fills a whole at a fixed cost for a few years.

Rantanen article.

Contract negotiations?

Rantanen's contract expires on June 30, 2025. Suddenly it seems like it's still a long time, but for the top players, they start talking about an extension in good time.

This is what happens with Rantasen too.

- Negotiations haven't started yet. According to NHL rules, one year before the end of the contract, further negotiations can begin. They will probably start next summer, Rantanen tells Iltalehte at the table of a cafe in the center of Denver.

Is there an option to go elsewhere?

- Probably not. I have had very good years here. There are so many good players here. I'm only interested in winning, that's the most important thing. In this team, many players are in prime time, this team will be able to win in the next few years, 27-year-old Rantanen answers.

So based on this, a small home-town discount coming? I hope.. He doesn't want to leave it seems.

C-Mac has zero excuses this year. He has the ammo to get a deal done. He can manage the cap if he’s willing to pay the price. Team looks really good but has a few major flaws.

No reason the Avs shouldn’t move from that 6-10 range into that 1-5 range after the deadline.

Not enough to afford Rantanen at 13+, a proper 2C needed to win, and the depth required to win.

AND you're staring down the barrel of the biggest defenseman contract in NHL history.
And let's not forget that new contract will certainly come with an NMC for a few years and then an M-NTC which will make it very hard to move once he starts regressing. He needs to go this summer IMO.

Yeah, if we keep Rantanen, we must keep Ritchie and hope he pans out. Basically our only hope solving the center situation for cheap. So not exactly great situation.

If the pro scouts can work their magic on an undervalued 2C, then that also offers hope for keeping guys.

And I dont think for second but that he RJ mistake is on the proscouts. Its not consistent with their handiwerk. It is, however, consistent with CM being cheap and having the Columbus connection.

Sam Bennett was once an undervalued 3C in Calgary. Zacha took a step forward in Boston also from where he was in NJ. And even look at guys who have recently turned the corner/are showing signs while remaining with their cirrent team. If the Avs can land a Sam Bennett the way Florida did, it would be huge.

True true.

When you look at good deals, it's exactly situation like you mentioned.

Kadri, ROR, Bennett etc. traded and these teams had good centers front of them. Not that we wanted to trade ROR thou.

Team with too many good centers is a good starting point. Then potentially players who want change of scenery but has shown good level (like ROR).

It's doable.

I kinda hope we keep him around, give him the LOC contract, if he'll take it.
Yeah that's probably not the value although that would be amazing.

I think if Drouin is extended with the Avs, you're looking at $2.5M-$3M per year for 3-4 years. If he wants more, he can be a UFA and most likely get it on the open market but he's fit in well here.
