My money is on Wennberg I think. with darkhorse being that they shake loose someone not thought to be available, but that seems like an offseason move given how to FO has operated in the past

Why is Philly selling Seeler/Walker if they're in a playoff spot?
Do you think they have a chance to win 1 round let alone any more than that ?

I think they are being realistic and if they aren't going to re-sign either guy, get something for them.

I don't think they're a good team at all I get what you're saying. Just not a good signal to send to a team that worked hard all year. Expiring contracts and not a contender makes sense.
TBH they could probably put up a good fight against Carolina (they would play them if playoffs start today). Nothing special about Carolina's team.

I get the sense that CMac and Sakic don't feel like they have a lot to work with asset wise and they only want to spend if they think they have a good shot of success. If they don't make any kind of deal, it's probably going to be due to knowledge of Landeskog and Nuke's readiness and maybe even things like how much Makar is hampered.

If that read is correct, the big mistake they made was letting Kadri go. Sure he's expensive and the contract won't age well, but it wasn't essential that we spend 4.5 on Manson, 4 on Ryjo, etc

They pulled that shit last year. You can't go belly up two years in a row when you're supposed to be competing in your very limited window.

What a bunch of p***yes Avs management would be if they passed on the season again.

If it's inevitable that CM is just going to get someone like Roslovic/Wennberg/Granlund, why the wait? Just do it already and move on so you can lighten the load of key guys and the new acquisition can have more time to find their footing.

Just because this board assumes one of these guys are inevitable, doesn’t mean management has decided.

There are likely many conversations on many players happening right now. It may very well be that one of those guys is who the Avs trade for, but that doesn’t mean they’re their primary choice.

For example, if communication is still ongoing for guys like Nelson, or Mittlestadt or Zegras or some other random center, why would CMac and co settle prematurely for something less desirable until it becomes clear it’s the only option.

Takes two to tango. One could argue that Craig Conroy could've got more value from Zadorov, Lindholm and Tanev if he would wait a bit more. The returns have not been underwhelming, but just ok. The rest of the GMs have not been as eager to get deals done.

Think about it, there are plenty of teams looking at players, not just us. Not that many deals have happened yet.

This is a lie, they have plenty of reasonable to quality assets. Plenty to sure up some holes in the roster and balance out the team.

CMac is just too big of p***y to use anything. Then the worst f***ing part is when he does finally decide to get off his lazy ass, he almost always overpays at the deadline for some crap ass vet, that will be lucky to score 1 goal, because he waited far too long and got desperate.

Avs currently have 1,241,000 in cap space. Assuming they send Kiviranta and Wagner to AHL, they will have 2,791,000.

That maybe enough to make one trade. Like Henrique with 50% retantion, pretty much takes up all that money. The Avs need more though. Sending Wagner down means they would need a 4C and also they still need a back up goalie. Also they have to fit in Kovalenko when he comes over.

There is just no way to do all this without trading RyJo. He has to go

They could also just do what Calgary did and get 75% retention for an extra 4th rounder or so.

They would still have a hard time finding a 4C and a back up goalie because they would need retantion on them also and I’m not sure the Avs have enough assets to make all those moves

If they get a quality #2C, I don't frankly give a f*** what else they do. Run with Prosvetov and hope that everyone stays healthy. Just make RyJo go away and get us a #2.

Sit Nuke until the playoffs. Problem solved.

Vegas does it again and will get Guentzel.

And Dallas will do the same if Seguin is out longer.

Aren't you kind of making the point here? Do you remember the Ignore the Blonde scene from A Beautiful Mind? Its somewhat applicable here, no?

Wennberg, Granlund, and Roslovic might be traded. But that doesn't mean they all will be traded. The game of musical chairs works on the supply side of things as well. Columbus, Seattle, and San Jose would all like to get something as opposed to nothing, no?

They can’t just sit Nuke. He’s not injured and has already cleared to practice and will probably play on March 4th

Yeah, but the deals that happened included both 2C... And thats something we are in desperate need...... So that means the price for the remaining 2Cs will go up......

Thats what happens when you gamble instead of solving this damn problem.

Mittelstadt is only making 2.5 this year and don't forget Buffalo's AGM was in the building for three straight Avs games.

It might be the only move of significance cMac has left available to him.

Going after the lesser guys could end up being the result of a domino effect caused by what happens with the bigger targets. Thats true. But it doesnt have to be that way. And to be honest, the idea the Avs are truly in on the bigger targets is likely head in the clouds like always. So why not do yourself a favor and be practical about it by leaning into getting a lesser guy so you have the benefit of time? Do people actually believe the Avs are going to outbid others for these guys?

Btw, the resistance to trade goalies and Cs seems to be so uniform, that the issue of collusion can legitImately be raised.

At the deadline, the cap can be figured out. Between retention, sending players to the minors or money in/money out... plenty of ways to make it work. The Cap isn't a huge limitation right now.

Just say the Avs wanted Guentzel and Neddy from Pit. Get Pitt to retain 50% on both. Run Guentzel through Chicago and add a 3rd for another 50%. Then you have the duo for a cap hit of 2.25m. Just sending Dermy down leaves the Avs like 20k short (though Avs would send down Annunen and have to figure out 250k).

Or in a different, more realistic trade... Avs grab Wennberg + Dreiger from Seattle, both at 50%... run both through Detroit for a 3rd and a 5th for another 50%. They end up with the Avs at a cap hit of 1.7. Send down Annunen and that leaves ~300k worth of room. Where they could send down Jones and Wags to run a minimum roster (I doubt they would, but could) to open up a $2m space for another move... where even directly they could add a ~4m guy at 50% retention.

The cap is an issue to start the season and move through the first half or so... after that, you can find maneuverability quite easily. Especially at the deadline where ~1m retained is more like 250k (sometimes much less with signing bonuses) in real dollars.

Yeah, if Avs are willing to give up Byram, I can see that working out. I’m just not sure they’re willing to trade Byram. I’m thinking they don’t

I don't either, I 100% believe their plan is to keep Byram and trade Girard.

But if their AGM is there for that long, they're probably talking about something.

Yeah cap is a lame excuse for lack of moves or attempting to get better. If you have desire to fix an issue you can make it happen.

Some moves take more work and assets, but it can be done.
