Speculation: 2026-27 Trade/FA thread/Roster Thread - Waiting for the SCF to be over….

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
If the Sens are unwilling to move Yakemechuck/Pinto for McTavish than pass on trading with them. The 25th overall pick does nothing, you are lucky if that 25th even becomes a bottom 6er who scores 15 to 20 a year and given the Ducks history with late 1sts and Forwards (Tracey, Perreault, Jones, Steel, Gaucher) they are more likely to get nothing out of that pick. A Steel type player is the best case scenario and they already got Washe/Gaucher/Procyszyn.

I think we need a complementary mid-pairing D that can play with LaCombe carrying them (like Trouba was), and a second mid-pairing D that can play like a mid-pairing D, assuming that they can play with Mintyukov.
That's at a minimum but doesn't make the team any better than it was 2 months ago. If the goal is to improve then that isn't enough.

I think options open up tremendously if we're open to a LD and playing someone on their off side. And acquisition cost will be much lower as well.

What is Chicago doing ? 4th overall + other assets for just Byram & bottom 6 grinder ? Byram is the most overrated Dman from the 2019 draft who's rep is from being on the Colorado Cup team. Same GM who thought it was smart to trade into the 2020 top 7 to pick Korchinski who's just about to completely bust.

It's reasonable to expect the young guys (collectively) to show some improvement, even if it isn't linear. This isn't the Kings team you keep trying to compare them to.
I expect the young guys to improve but that won't be nearly enough. If Verbeek replaces the RD with guys like Spence and Carlo what does other improvement matter? The team just won't be good enough.

I love what the hawks are doing… Carry on hawks, carry on. (8) don’t stop believing (8)

My goal at this point is to not get worse, without burning every asset we will need to actually push over the hump in a couple years when we should be contending.
I understand and agree but the equivalent replacement for Trouba is Parayko. Anything less IS getting worse.

I think all this misses the point. No one is saying Stenberg isnt a good pick and it makes sense that deciding on Stenberg (or McKenna if Toronto gets squirrely) makes Eklund a lot more expendable to shore up the defense. But they didn't trade Eklund for second overall. They traded for 9th overall.

I don't know, for me, I see this draft having a solid top 7-8 guys with strong NHL potential. Maybe the 7 guys I have in mind don't all go number 7 but if the idea is that they're gonna use 9th overall to draft their defensive reinforcements there's a lot that can go wrong after trading a proven commodity for what is essentially a higher odds dice roll.

You're mind reading again of what could be done.

SJ isn't looking to win the cup today. They're still filling out their organization with talent. They found LD Dickinson at #11 overall in 2024 while using their #1OA on C Celebrini.

There could be a possibility that SJ was thinking about drafting a defenseman at #2 overall because they needed high end talented blueliner in their pipeline. SJ probably felt that Stenberg was more of a sure prospect compared to the defensemen available. Thereby reducing the risk at what to do at #2 overall. By acquiring the 9th overall pick, SJ potentially improves their scoring winger from Eklund to Stenberg at pick #2. Stenberg scored at a much higher pace than Eklund as an 18-year old in the SHL. Then they use the #9 pick for a defensemen, where they are guaranteed to grab one of the high tiered d-men.

I do want to see a vet added for one of those spots but I'm quite adamant that Moore can quickly grow into a no nonsense top 4 minute muncher if given a chance.

There's also one large wild card that doesn't seem to get mentioned but that is that Q absolutely loves Hinds, who has plenty experience playing either side. Despite the lack of NHL experience (heck he at least has more NHL playoff games than a lot of guys), I wouldn't be shocked to see him thrown right into the fire and playing significant minutes right off the hop.

I'd feel a lot better about the roster on paper if we had a proven top 4 RHD but I also don't want to make any major expenditure on some passable top 4 guy only to find that we have multiple internal options who can fill those minutes. There's a line somewhere between making LaCombe babysit or actually giving a young Dman a chance to prove they can be a suitable partner. Trouba definitely gave us that one veteran default option if all else failed, I get that.

Moore turns 25 mid season, not really a kid anymore. Has a season under his belt, even if a lot of it was on the wing. He has all the physical attributes of a defensive minute muncher who can move pucks in a top 4 role. I'm quite good with giving him 18+ mins per night playing with one of our top lefties and working him into the PK mix.
