If the Stars do acquire Rantanen and extend him I'm guessing Nill would have already had preliminary conversations with Benn, Duchene and perhaps even Granlund's camps on next year's money situation. If he hasn't, big gamble trying to get some if any of these guys signed to team friendly deals. If I had to guess Stankoven is going the other way. Hopefully it's not Robertson!!!!!!!

Don't break up this chemistry:
Since the 4 Nations break the Dallas Stars are 6-1-0. The leading scorers in the NHL during that time:

1) Roope Hintz (3-13-16)
2) Jason Robertson (7-6-13)
4) Wyatt Johnston (7-5-12)

The only deal that made sense to me, being the least disruptive to the roster and locker room, was a one-for-one with Robertson. If that were the case, I would have been okay with it so long as the Rantanen contract was reasonable.

I do worry about giving him ~13mill a year given stars top players around him have taken team friendly deals to make the cap work.

Might either create a locker room grievance or when coming contracts are up see players put foot in ground and say OK pony up.

Would love Rantanen, but if I wake up tomorrow (deadline is overnight for me in Aus) and we haven't signed him, I'll get over it quick.

I'm wondering what kind of a deal that could be. This is a very delicate affair. The Canes are in a playoff spot and wanna win so they won't be overly interested in prospects or picks unless they can flip them right away in other deals. They're looking for players who can help them now. The same goes for the Stars who would be going sideways giving up important roster players for Rantanen. Also, Dallas probably needs a defenseman more than they need another forward and the Canes paid Necas, Drury and a 2nd round pick to get Rantanen (and Hall who probably didn't have much value) just a few weeks ago. They can't really justify trading him for much less. At the same time Rantanen hasn't really proved his worth away from MacKinnon. This is very complicated no matter how you look at it.

Also, I could be completely wrong but my guess is that Rantanen just wants the best deal possible and therefore wants to test free agency no matter what. This could backfire though as his current play doesn't really help his chances of getting a big deal.

Feel like Rantanen has given himself a Pseudo Free Agency here. Got his offer from Avs which wasn't enough, got a higher deal in Carolina said no...seemingly has said no to the Stars offer.

Seems as though true contending teams won't be able to sign him, so a team like Seattle or Chicago or one of those who can throw a big bucket at him..he might have to accept having less success with his higher money...has his ring.

Time is key here..... His time to sign with a contender is running out fast! I predict he signs extension with Dallas before deadline.

May be in the final hour or minutes, but ultimately he signs now on a contender or risk ending up highly paid, on a mediocre team.

The delay is in hope for higher offers, most likely not gonna happen.

Welcome to Dallas!

Agreed.

The question here is if Rantanen overplayed his hand. Like I said I think think he wants to to test Free Agency, get the best deal possible. However, how many teams are gonna want to spend north of 10 millions a year for a byproduct of MacKinnon? If Rantanen doesn't get traded then he has to find a way to score on that Canes team. Otherwise he might regret not accepting that Avs offer.
