I don't think he wants to sign with a contender. I think there are two possibilities with 1 being the more likely one:

1.) Rantanen is looking for money. Period.

2.) Rantanen wants to play for a specific team, maybe a shortlist of teams.

I think it depends on Rantanen's willingness to play in Dallas. If he wants to play for the Stars, a deal is gonna get done. Not likely though.

I think he either wants to test Free Agency no matter what or he knows exactly where he wants to play.
 
Guessing Mr Nill is playing hardball..... The offer is out there, take or leave.

You have till deadline or less, depending if another deal with another play can be done.

The no state tax helps this contract for him but like some have said, he may want as much as possible, whatever State be damned!

If it doesn't happen I pray someone will leak what the agreed trade was. I'm very curious on what Nill is willing to give up and what the Canes deemed as good enough value.

For me, it's hard to see us getting a signed Rantanen without giving up something very valuble.

Sounds like Mikko is just playing for money. It'd be great to have him but if he's just trying to get the most money whatever.
 
If he wants a crazy amount at least we don't have to worry about him signing with a good team in the offseason.

Maybe if he makes it clear he won't sign anywhere until the offseason, the Canes will lower their asking price to that of a pure rental...

I was so upset about losing Stank. Then I got super excited about adding Rantanen. Now I am sad again. What a morning...
 
If he really wants an extension to be so expensive, I prefer if we just don't trade for him, tbh. That way got that little short-lived burst of excitement that we all want from a Free Agency/Trade Deadline without handcuffing the team to a terribly overpaid contract, lol.

I would also love to know what Nill had in mind for fitting him in next year.

probably one of the few times, of we'll figure it out later makes perfect sense.

They'd probably have to bridge Wyatt instead of go term, until the end of Seguins contract. not the end of the world.

So if this Rantanen thing fall through what else do we do ? We do kind of need a defenseman
