This is the most honest, transparent and trustworthy Don Sweeney press conference I have ever seen.
No word salad.
I would even, surprise,
allow Sweeney to manage what is obviously a hybrid rebuild.
Not a retool. A rebuild.
Without burning down the house, unnecessary in any case.

Bitch about the nebulous Marchand return, but both sides negotiated from the beginning of season.
Bringing back Brad wasn't in the cards for several reasons.
He will always be a Boston Bruin to me.
I am pleasantly surprised and perfectly content with the moves made today.

Only trade I'm disappointed with was the Brazeau one.
At least Sweeney got one Canadian player with all those moves (Fraser Minten). Though he did trade 2 away.

I agree - Florida or the Caps win the east. Florida’s experience from the last two years is huge. Let’s still need the big guys to step up and the jury is out on that.

Thought he was pretty forthcoming. Even got in to some potential tampering which was amusing.
All in all he had a good day I thought. Team has become stale and complacent. Lots of new bodies coming in and they’ll have some new voices in the locker room too
I like Carlo but the speed of the game has exposed him significantly the last 2 years.
It's actually comical how both the Leafs media and fanbase have coagulated around Brandon Carlo as this huge add. Jeff O'Neil was the only guy who seemed to go "wait, there's probably a reason they're dumping him"

Marchand will play a lot better if used in a complimentary role playing in the Panthers top 6 . He still knows where to go and he can shoot . He can’t drive a line anymore but he won’t have to . I think he will have a great playoff statistically .
I guess if I worked for Brad as Agent, take 1 year at 4-4.5.
Start rehab now, 6-months of healing and training. Catch the fountain of middle-aged hockey player and if healthy and feeling it, 26-27 season another one year deal. That could be 7-8 million in bank. Cementing more his legacy.
Conversely, a playoff bound Brad could be playing well into May, getting banged up, much less rehab and possibly broken down more heading into UFA time. Big risk and I think a mistake on Team Brad's part.

Marchy probably took a look at the bad contracts Sweeney gave out and decided he deserved one of those .
This is what happens when you overpay for mediocre talent.
At some point even a guy like Marchy ,who has taken on team friendly contracts realizes that if everyone else is getting paid there is no point .

I for one really appreciated the candor. He laid it all out there. Even with the idendity of the team he envisions. A team that can play it any way you want, like 2023, but with commitment to team D. Hope they can turn it around before the core is out of their prime.
