Fair enough. Give him the rest of this season and from there you can decide if he has it. Lots of people just seem to see him as a AAAA player with not enough size and speed for the NHL.

He may be just that, but there's only one way to find out. Since we're not pushing for a playoff spot, it seems like the right time to let him and Lysell get quality minutes and see what they got.

The forward lineup I'd like to see down the stretch...

Geekie - Mittelstadt - Pasta
Merkulov - Zacha - Poitras
Marat - Lindholm - Lysell
Lauko - Minten - Kastelic
I like it but I doubt Sweeney does it. I think we are going to see a lot of Brown and Letteri (too tired to spell it right). Seems pigs need to fly before Lysell is called up again.

Hopefully I am wrong and Sweeney does a U turn on giving higher end prospects more than a game or two

The only way I see Marchand returning is if the offers he gets in FA are similar to what Boston was offering. He seems like the kind of guy that will live in Boston after his playing days are over. Would he want to uproot his family for 3/4 years for a marginally better deal then what Boston would give him?

He needs to. If he doesn’t want to waste pasta’s last years, especially if they intend to re-sign Marchand in the summer, is to throw their prospects out into the deep end and see which ones swim and which sink and make some more moves with those guys this summer

Given the injuries and the trades made today, we've got arguably one of the weaker rosters in the East. I get the rationale for playing Lysell and Merkulov. That said, what are your expectations for these 2 players over the next 20 games or so? What are you hoping to see from them that'll give you a good idea on whether or not they're legit?

If they both put up Wahlstrom numbers (which very well COULD happen), are we going to write them off? What do you do then? My point here is that the expectations for both of these guys, on this roster, this season, should be low. If the results are low......what are we really learning?

I'd like to see them each get 10 games.

If Merkulov can't produce after that, then yeah he slides closer to the AAAA / Lettieri category. He'll be 25 next year. The book isn't closed, but it's not looking good.

I wouldn't write Lysell off, even if he goes pointless. He's only 21 and this would be his first extended look. I think it's important he get that experience. He can take what he learns from those 10 games into the off-season, hopefully it will give him some confidence and incentive. I don't want him coming into camp next year still wondering what the NHL game is like. I want him to know what it is, and that he can play at that level.
