Something’s gotta give at some point about the Taxes situation. Gonna be really tough for the Cali/Canadian teams here if every star player only wants to sign big deals in No Tax States
There are plenty of players who have signed big deals in states with income taxes (there is no such thing as a "No Tax State") or in Canada.

Veleno to Chicago for just Mrazek and Smith.

I remember when he was given exceptional status. I saw him at the world juniors and was not impressed at all.
Yeah, exceptional status was pretty wack when they were giving it to guys like Veleno and Sean Day. Glad they're pulling back on it to some degree.

Dallas being a powerhouse might help get us an extra 3rd!
Yes, but it lowers the value of the first.

Not to mention that nobody wanted to play in Florida/TBL/etc. when they were awful franchises. Winning, great ownership, and no media pressure play a huge role in attracting talent.

Not saying that they won’t ever sign in CA/NY/Canada, but it seems pretty clear to me in recent years the players are preferring to sign in places without income tax. Pretty big advantage when they’re saying Rantanen takes home $4M more signing this deal with Dallas than he would for signing the same exact deal with COL, but we’re all under the same salary cap number.

Honestly, I think that's just confirmation bias.

Day I almost get because he was way more physically developed and was able to clown 13-14 year olds just based on his tools and skating. It wasn't until he got to Jrs that it was exposed that he wasn't skilled enough to elevate his game and work through his lower hockey IQ and technical ability.

Veleno just never seemed like there was much there. He looked incredibly meh. He was taller but not physically bigger/more imposing, and didn't seem to possess any standout physical ability. He looked like a mediocre 3C/4C on Team Canada and I couldn't see a single thing that would point to him being special in any way.

In what way? Brindamour likes a more grinding style of play as opposed to run and gun. 5'8 Stankoven isn't an ideal fit for a grinding team.
Stankoven may be 5'8 but he plays above his size and has a really good motor, can definitely thrive with guys like Jarvis and Aho in the top 6

on some level, no tax states level the playing field with the Torontos/New Yorks of the league where endorsement opportunities can supplement income as well, where Dallas and Florida are unlikely to offer those opportunities.

Theres no way to completely even all the advantages.

Players also have to want to live in Dallas or Miami. Most of them seem to be fine with it, but I'd be demanding an extra $2 million.

I will say I am happy with Grier’s deadline generally. I expected no 1st rounders and we got 2, that’s a win. I am though questioning if he could’ve gotten more, just looking at other trades around the league.

That said, we really didn’t have a lot to work with.

Feels like we're entering that part of the deadline where the buyers are all happy, and now the sellers are getting desparate.

Yes, I wonder...

Not a full fix because of cash out the door for an org, but some sort of tax adjusted cap could be a bandaid. Basically something like San Jose getting additional cap space to offset the taxes when compared to a no tax state.
