So who do y'all think returns more in a trade between Saros and Helle if they're both available this offseason?

Saros 2x5m, 0.920 over the last 3 seasons

Helle 1x6m, 0.915 over the last 3 seasons

I think Helle has a higher reputation /name value across the league. And evidently longer track record. Think they'll be 3rd and 4th in Vezina voting but Helle obviously the finalist.

Saros right now. 2 years left. Cheaper. 2 years younger.

Can't re-sign, is an unknown long term. After July 1st Hellebuyck can sign an extension, and obviously has more value amongst a lot of GM's as they vote on the Vezina. I think Hellebuyck has more value with the extension.

Saros absolutely over rental Hellebuyck.

Also fwiw Saros has never been *great* in a playoff series. Mid to meh outside the spot duty as a backup in 17-18.

Yeah we dropped the ball. Best goalie this franchise will likely ever see.
How did we drop the ball if he just doesn't want to be in Canada? I think the team has treated him very well, given him the playing time he wanted and put up with a lot of his drama.

Someone earlier researched goalies with the same amount or more of Vezina finalists and wins as Helle. All cup winners or cup finalists iirc.

Yeah he's likely gonna land on a team and take them to the promise land at some point.

We dropped the ball by building a dysfunctional team around him that obviously had massive issues in the locker room for the better part of half a decade and doing absolutely nothing about it. Mr. Dithers strikes again!

Heart aches at losing Helle, but the Jets have wasted him to date.

Edit: If Helle wants to head to the US because of Canada’s COVID policies, then we finally have something to justifiably blame on Trudeau :naughty:

This news sucks
It does suck, but I'm already into rationalization mode. Let me share.

Helle is at his absolute peak--30 years old, finishing a year where he is above his career save % and with three Vezina nomination (& 1 win) in the last 3 years. He will never return more in trade than right now.

His next contract will be for 7-8 years at over $10M AAV ,taking him from 31-38 or 39. I am convinced that his body will break down well before that and his performance will drop commensurately. Don't ask me why I am so sure--most (but not all) of the info is accessible to anyone.

If the team was going to win a Cup with Helle the window was 2018 to now. Nothing is going to propel this team to stardom in Helle's remaining peak years.

This is a compelling sell-high situation for the team.

Helle has been arguably the most durable goaltender in the league since entering. Guy could and would play every single game if he could. Brushes off collisions like they are nothing and generally isn't phased very much by any kind of contact. Not only is he a workhorse, dude is an iron horse.

Not great news, however all of this could really be a blessing in disguise. Hellys new contract very well could have been the Wheeler 2.0 contract.
The goalie market is saturated this year, however Helly is heads above anyone available and the return should put us in a good position moving forward.. We will also have a good bit of cap space to work with, and signing a platoon 1A 1B goalie should be the direction we look to move towards.

While I think Helle probably prefers to be play in the U.S, I will not buy that would be the main reason he wants out. I suspect this reason may be put out there ( even perhaps from Hele's camp as a bit of a fairwell solid) to soften the blow and stigma that it's a Winnipeg or team failure thing . The main factor is his ability to win. I have no doubt in that

That is all true, which is why he is going to fetch a fortune in trade. But it does not predict the future. I don't believe his body will be able to keep up this level of performance through his 30s, but am happy others, especially other GMs, feel differently.

The only other player I said this about was Byfuglien, who lasted a bit longer than I thought, but not much.

Agree with you
I think his style of play is less susceptible to injuries however they'll eventually be a breakdown given the mileage.

And there should be no confusion about whether Hellebuyck has interest in signing an extension in Winnipeg. That ship has sailed. His next contract will be with a new team.
Certainly salivating over what we may get for him. I hear we have an up and coming superstar goalie currently playing with the Battalion in the O H L. Fingers crossed on that one, even though he may be two or three seasons away.

Good riddance to bad rubbish! :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, I expected this would be the case. I think a lot has to do with the covid and vaccine requirements followed by the government regulations at the time. It probably has soured his opinion of playing for a Canadian team.

Hopefully the return on Helle will be good.
