I still think the Sabres will take a shot at landing him at the draft or after. They are in that sweet spot with their contracts that they need to take a step up and he would help them be way more consistent and they could spell him more often with Comrie there and let Lind get a ton of games in the AHL.

They could see how the year goes and if they do well and I think they will sign him after.

The question people need to ask is, are you willing to have Helley on a long term deal worth McDavid type cap hit. Then we can discuss possible trades or not.

I don't think that is quite the right question. I mean, it is A question but it is not THE question.

You need to ask if you want Helle and his contract on a team that can't contend before Helle regresses. All he would be doing is getting a few more wins per year, reducing the value of our draft picks.

Helle just named a Vezina finalist. Great accomplishment in a difficult season.

3 nominations, one win in the last 4 years (or is it 5?). Pretty impressive.

Helle to LAK for Brandt Clarke - straight up.

Sorry for cherry picking pieces of your posts guys, but honestly, this is where I stand right now as well.

I see this off season as an opportunity to get rid of some huge future contracts, while adding some real young talent to replace what would be leaving. But I really have little faith that the Jets won't screw this up.

My expectation is that they simply won't do it. A whole lot of nothing coming, like last off-season. Hope I'm wrong. :(

Plenty of talent in that club. But lots of pieces I doubt they'd want to move on from.

What do they offer?
(Can reply in trade thread if more appropriate)

I don't know but they acquired a lot of talent over the last few years and they got most of their core signed outside Dahlen and they need to make some hay while guys like Power,Krebs,Quinn and Peterka. Not to Mention Savoie,Kulich and Ostlund in the wings.

I think the 13th pick would be my starting point. Probably UPL as a goalie coming back. Like really they don't have to move anyone off there current roster and make a solid deal for us.

None of it? The poster doth protest too much, methinks. Helly has to own some of this team's failings. That he has never, ever uttered a mea culpa is the main reason I can't stand him and can't wait for him to move on.

I have always thought of that as his way of maintaining his self confidence. It can be a little annoying at times, but if it helps him to bounce back next game I have no problem with it.

I agree with your post but disagree with the bolded. With 80/55/26 as good as gone, if Helle tells Chevy that he is willing to stay, he will have a blank check from Chevy to name his price. The Jets will feel the need to "save face" in front of the STH (eventhough they shouldn't) after losing so much star power and use Helle to sell that they are still a competitive team.

I do agree however that it likely won't get that far as Helle won't wanna sign after losing the top 2 Cs.

Hope your first point is wrong and your second is right.

As a current Vezina nominee who already has one on his trophy shelf, the return on Helle will be too big to lose out on.

Another Vezina nomination is great for Helly  I don't think Dubois is staying and that will affect Helly's decision for sure. If he does want out trading him to Philly for Hart and a high pick would interest me .

Sure - but Philly is way more than Helle away from contending. I don't think they are a good trade partner.

Kulich is looking extremely well in the AHL already.

He's our 1 marquee trade chip. I think you have to hold out for a home run.
I hear ya. I'd take it for sure.

Kulich is putting up slightly less PPG in his D+1 in the AHL than Perfetti (although Kulich is doing it over more games). Looking really good for sure.

I just think it's hard for teams to trade high value young pieces for an older player like Helle (who is great no doubt), AND then have to pay a boatload on a new deal. It's kind of the double whammy.

The thing is Buffalo's forward core is pretty locked in and a are young. I think they can afford that kind of package and not miss a beat.

That would be a grand slam return IMO. Would be amazing. I'd probably settle for Kulich and a 2nd honestly.

I think that undervalues him by quite a bit. It has to start with #13 I think. Then it is a matter of which prospect is added.

I think not taking anyone off the current roster is often a big thing. That is with teams that have just put together a good roster. You are giving them the last piece of the puzzle.

Possibly. I'm looking at it like Kulich is the piece representing the value of the 13th, and a high second will turn into a good prospect.

I'd love to see it, but IMO if the 13th is in the package I don't see us getting a Kulich like 2nd piece, the 2nd piece is closer to the early 2nd round pick value IMO.

I'm looking at it like Kulich was last year's #28 and the value of the 13th would be the 13th.

Kulich is looking better than either of the guys they took ahead of him so you can elevate his relative value if you like.

I think a goalie with Hellebuyck's resume is worth 13 + Kulich quite easily. And I don't buy the comparison to Schneider. Helle is way more proven than Schneider was. This latest Vezina nomination has to add to his value. Not as much as winning a cup would have, but still something.

Sabres can give us that kind of return without disturbing the existing roster and they can easily afford the cap hit. There will be competing offers for Helle.

Interesting I rarely get into speculating about specific trade returns because they never happen in real life. Buffalo makes an interesing trade partner for Winnipeg and Helle. They have a very high scoring team, they have so much young talent, and they have a top 5 prospect pool IMO. They are overflowing with young talent and as you correctly pointed out they can make the move without disturbing what they have. Heck they could make all sorts of moves with their ELC depth. Thomson is 24 and a Star #1 centre that is that 100 point type, Cozens is the #2 center only 21 years old and got 68 points last season.

I think it comes down to how much faith they have in Devon Levi being their goalie of the future after his amazing College career. Not sure I would sell the farm for Helle with Levi becoming a full time NHL’er this season but how often does a guy of Helle’s pedigree come along?

We’ll see I guess.

Nice post! Someone like Helle comes around almost never. Jets would need to consider filling the shoes of a centre (or two) as well as goalie if this trade happens.

I agree, but this also may be why a trade doesn't happen (i.e. the home run is never offered). Not necessarily because Chevy is snoozing at the cottage all summer.

It's all pure speculation of course. But I'm inclined to believe that Chevy works and tries harder to make trades than many on this board think. Just my opinion. It's also possible that he purposely doesn't make deals.
