Word on the street is Helle is a wanted man, should he become available.

Ottawa and New Jersey are also rumoured to be very interested in Helle, if he does not sign with Winnipeg.

LA has a lot of good assets but word of caution with them, many of their good assets could bust. I like NJ the most as a trade partner with Nemec as a target... I know NJD fans will balk at such a proposal but their GM might think differently, goaltending is the most important part of a team playoff time, look at how many years of McDrai the Oilers have wasted by not having decent goaltending, NJ would be wise to avoid that fate.

I think NJ's GM would balk at Nemec. Best you'd likely get is Seamus Casey.

”IF” Helle is going as part of the larger plan then you sell him if and when the market is hot. If you have young teams like LA , New Jersey, and possibly Ottawa you really only need two to create competition. Helle has been our rock and I will miss him but we need to maximize the return on such a key organization asset.

I love Helle but I don’t want his next contract for a team that is not in contention. Same as Scheif I have zero interest in Mark’s next contract for this team.

Totally agree. Yes it is one of the toughest decisions to make to give a top 5 goaltender away in the modern NHL but if you don't have the proper D and F roster to match it with, it kind of only holds you back. It's exactly the reason why Montreal has been lost in mediocrity over the least 10 years. A lot of that has to do with Carey Price and his contract.

I feel conflicted on this one.
Ideally I’d like to see 26/55 gone and PLD stay if that makes him “the guy”
I’m probably delusional to think PLD could be happy and more importantly healthy.
In my delusional scenario I’d want Hellebucyk to stay also, however like you I’d like 55 & 37 to find true hockey happiness and success because it won’t be here ultimately.
I don’t trust this organization not to screw up this offseason.

I don’t know what direction it will go.

I have lost faith in our owner and that is never a good place to be.

An undersized 5'9 162 lbs D man for an elite goalie like Helle? That shouldn't even be a discussion from the Jets perspective.

Probably not but he's their best RHD prospect behind Nemec and I really don't see NJ trading Nemec for Hellebuyck, especially with the number of goalies that'll be in the UFA pool this summer. They also have other guys to pay, can they even fit a Hellebuyck extension under the cap?

I'm not saying target Casey but, from NJ's perspective I can't see them give up Nemec right now.

The question people need to ask is, are you willing to have Helley on a long term deal worth McDavid type cap hit. Then we can discuss possible trades or not.

Helly 3-4 years @ ~$10,000,000 no longer than that. But, we can't afford the extra $4,000,000 cap hit for Helly unless we dump another large contract, like Wheeler.

If I did my math correctly, here is the list of goalies who have been nominated for the Vezina at least 3 times, winning at least once. The Vezina trophy was award to goalies by voting starting in the 1982-1983 season.

List of goalies who have 3 nominations (or more) + 1 win (or more)
Vasilevskiy
Rinne
Lundqvist
Brodeur
Kiprusoff
Belfour
Roy
Hasek
Barrasso
Fuhr
Hellebuyck

Some big names are not on that list.

Vezina candidate. This is only good news if Jets trade him. Sell high. Could get a massive return for an elite goalie still in his prime.

every goalie on that list has either won a stanley cup or at least been to the finals. It shows just what a horrible job chevy has done putting a quality team around helle. Wasted opportunity.

Hadn't looked at it like that. I think Helle should eventually end up in the hall. Not getting a cup out of a hall of fame level goalie is really a miss especially since we had him during (likely) his peak.

Helly is not going to sign a 3-4 year deal. He is at the point of being able to sign his career contract and he isn’t going to piss it away because Jets fans want the perfect scenario. 7 X $10 M is what he will be looking at and it won’t likely be with the Jets unless Chevy commits everything he has to trying to win now.

Yup , he would be stupid to sign for such a short term, max term, max dollars is what he will want and what he will get.

Sorry for cherry picking pieces of your posts guys, but honestly, this is where I stand right now as well.

I see this off season as an opportunity to get rid of some huge future contracts, while adding some real young talent to replace what would be leaving. But I really have little faith that the Jets won't screw this up.

I know he won’t sign for 3-4 years, that’s what I want not what Helly wants. And if his ask is 7 X $10 M then he’s as good as gone. You say unless Chevy commits everything to win now, except we can’t afford to give everyone what they want , so unless we get players back from say trading PLD and Chef that makes us competitive for a while, theres no way Helly would stay.

We had Helly for his best years IMO, the team just didn’t get it done.

Long way of saying Helly is getting traded, maybe not now but at the next trade deadline, but I just hope the return is good.
