WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

I mean forget Bedard and Fantilli who people knew since last world juniors wouldn't be coming back, even throw in Wright there (even though he's an AHL player right now) if Canada had Benson, Korchinski and Luneau that would make them a heavy heavy favorite. They got hit harder than a typical year with unavailable players in terms of relative to expectation and as far as the overall makeup of the age group goes. Still have 3 1st round picks on Defense but I dunno if there's a superstar amongst them.
It’s better not to think about that, in the long run the strength of the player pool matters so losing guys isn’t the worst sign but try to win with who’s available.

And Mateychuk and L’amour need to be better than tonight

I hope Beck is alright after that dirty hit. IIHF is a complete joke. Guaranteed that if a Canadian made that hit, it'll be 5 min, an ejection, and suspension. f***ing idiots.

he slows down the play especially on the PP, he doesn't think the game fast enough to play with the top skilled players on Canada.

You can argue it isn't his fault that he is being played in roles that are above his ability, but he has clearly been one of, if not the worst, forward we have so far.
He hasn't been great but if you think he was the worst forward today then maybe take off the beer goggles.

A lot of panic and being down in this thread. You guys need a little composure, everyone turning in the boys when the going gets tough? The sky is falling but as far as I can tell there is tons of talent on this roster and I’m still proud of the effort level and drive of the players.

You can’t win every game, there are other legit teams in this tournament. Attitude matters here boys, let’s dust ourselves off, check out the game tape, learn what we did wrong, and get up on Sunday and show the Germans why were the best god damned hockey nation on the planet.

I think the loss will be good for them, adversity now is better than later (example: 2021). Rehkopf needs to play. Not sure the rationale in benching him. Him & Celebrini together could be lethal Poitras and Minten are not living up to expectations.

100%. But it's also not like they got killed. They lost 2-0 to a team that has been unreal defensively and many viewed as being better than Canada to begin with. Team knows it has to play better if they wanna win now so thats good, even if it may not be possible for them.

Minten needs to be in the bottom six in a checking role. Shocked he wasn't in that role to start with, as a Leafs fan.

Sweden is an absolute wagon this year and Canada is weaker. We knew that befor going into the tournament. But man, did Canada look bad on the big ice today. The fact that we couldn’t enter Sweden’s Zone is a testament to their defence.

However, in our zone it felt like every loose puck, we were so slow getting to it. Literally, everytime there was a loose puck, I was like oh Sweden’s gonna get there first. Props to Savoie. Only player i jumped out of my seat from when Canada had the puck.
I agree.

To Canada's credit, if Savoie doesn't lose the puck, it's 2-1 and a different game. As someone else said (I think it was @hockey20000), we are capable of beating Sweden but it would require we score first - we can't be chasing the game.

100% accurate - minus the swearing.

**

Put someone else in net for Germany, get a win against Czechia and play our best game (yet) against the U.S.. If we meet Sweden in the GMG, score early (and often).

This quote threw me through a loop. I was thinking "I swear I used profanity." (No pun intended lol)

Just a shocking call. I was prepared to be mildly annoyed with only 2 minutes. No reason why this isn't AT LEAST 5 + game, given their standards. IIHF isn't better than the NHL when it comes to consistent calls. They're both bad at what they do.

I thought it should have been 2 minutes. 5 would have been fine, obviously, but 2 minimum. I agree, if a Canadian had done it, we would have been hit with the max.

I felt we were completely dominated and the score flattered us. Having said that...

We're capable of better. The loss will hopefully be a positive and motivate the kids to be better. We are due for a BIG game against a top team after losing to the U.S. and Sweden.

Stop being so negative guys, its just a round robin game. canada is always doing great when its playoffs

I would agree - we have seen the Canadians lose a round robin game and then rally into the medal round time and time again. Helluva thing ignoring all of the times that has happened and not think they are likely to do it again. It's a hallmark of Canadian play.

This is possibly the worst overall D Canada has brought to the WJC in some time.

#13 had a really challenging game and exhibited some real deficiencies when it came to his ability to process the game. Not sure why he got so much ice time.

#4 is a meh. Also, subpar game IQ and late to anticipate.

The rest of the D , excluding #24 who displayed good game sense was not noteworthy.

The forwards were also subpar in their game in general. I think most are highly skilled but, don't process the game well. Specifically, wasn't impressed with #12, #28, #9 and I expected more from # 15 and #17.
If you're really going to do this why not include a link to the roster with jersey numbers so people can actually interpret your post?

It hurts when you lose. Then you remember it's the Round Robin and it won't matter.

How many Canadian players produced offence against Sweden? Obviously, the players who produced the offence should have the ice time. In a two zero loss. I would like to see how other Canadian players produced more offence than he did.
In a 2 0 loss when NO ONE produced offense I'd like to see better balanced ice time in the hopes some one would emerge. Running the same guys out that gave you nothing, unsurprisingly, continued to give you nothing.
