WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Minten has a spot on this team but there isn't a single person who can argue he should be getting more minutes than Celebrini.
Not overall. I don't think he has. He didn't against Sweden though, but he will definitely lead the team in ice time when the tournament is over.

This is possibly the worst overall D Canada has brought to the WJC in some time.

#13 had a really challenging game and exhibited some real deficiencies when it came to his ability to process the game. Not sure why he got so much ice time.

#4 is a meh. Also, subpar game IQ and late to anticipate.

The rest of the D , excluding #24 who displayed good game sense was not noteworthy.

The forwards were also subpar in their game in general. I think most are highly skilled but, don't process the game well. Specifically, wasn't impressed with #12, #28, #9 and I expected more from # 15 and #17.

Luneau was such a massive loss, he would have been one of the top players in this tournament. But that created opportunity for others and there's still time to seize it.

Minten has been the worst forward, Rehkopf has been good and one of the top pure scorers on the team. Explain to me how their ice time has anything to do with earning it?
It is easy. The coaches believed that Minten (and every other player with more ice time) gave the team a better chance to win. Minten isn't the whole team lol

Would've been nice if he was in the tourney but, frankly who on the D is capable of seizing it. The roster composition seems weak..

He’s been brutal actually. I couldn’t care less if he was a prospect for the Leafs or from my team the Jets. Sure he has a role, but leading the team in ice time when down by 2 goals for half the game ain't it.
I couldn't care less which team he is a prospect for either. ( he just happens to be a leaf prospect and I am a Leaf fan)
He got some chances had some poor play, but so did every other player. Sweeden was just the better team that game.

Just outplayed by Sweden who hasnt allowed a goal all tournament. Honestly ASP looked like the worst defender on Sweden and he wasnt even that bad. There D is probably one of the best groups we have seen at the WJC

How has he been brutal, exactly? Did he have two bad giveaways that led to goals or even scoring chances? No. He just didn't score, just like everoyone else that got shutdown by Sweden's D. People are overreacting like crazy.

I would like to see some lineup changes by putting more skill with skill but Minten's been fine. People just seeing what they want to see.

No excuses. We got our asses handed to us. I cannot remember the last time we lost that badly.
A 2 goal loss is a really bad loss?, what are you smoking, they lost to the Czech's 5-2 last year and almost lost the gold to them, give your head a shake.

Sweden is an absolute wagon this year and Canada is weaker. We knew that befor going into the tournament. But man, did Canada look bad on the big ice today. The fact that we couldn’t enter Sweden’s Zone is a testament to their defence.

However, in our zone it felt like every loose puck, we were so slow getting to it. Literally, everytime there was a loose puck, I was like oh Sweden’s gonna get there first. Props to Savoie. Only player i jumped out of my seat from when Canada had the puck.

This was probably a good loss for them, they can learn from it and see what they need to do better, but the youth inexperience is showing from this team.

The Minten sucks stuff is overblown by people looking for an easy scapegoat. That line actually started to click a little in this game, Minten lead the team in shots on goal. The problem is he's miscast at 1LW, he's not the go-to trigger man on this team and shouldn't be deployed like one. The talk about juggling the lines and better defining/aligning the roles makes a lot of sense. Celebrini needs to go into the top 6 on the wing. I'm struggling to think of another forward that has really earned more ice time but the top 9 needs to go into the blender. Poitras waking up would be nice.

The losses on D are what they are and this F group is going to have to do a lot of extra work in their own zone and the neutral zone whenever Mateychuk - Lamoureux isn't on the ice.

I have no concerns in goal which is nice for a change.

he slows down the play especially on the PP, he doesn't think the game fast enough to play with the top skilled players on Canada.

You can argue it isn't his fault that he is being played in roles that are above his ability, but he has clearly been one of, if not the worst, forward we have so far.

Canana isn't weaker, they just are younger and have less exp, with each game they play they should improve, Sweden always choke when the games really matter, you can never call Sweden great when they don't have the stuff when things get tough.

What has he done to earn his ice time? A couple shots directly into the chest and other missing the net point blank? Producing zero offence whatsoever
How many Canadian players produced offence against Sweden? Obviously, the players who produced the offence should have the ice time. In a two zero loss. I would like to see how other Canadian players produced more offence than he did.

I mean forget Bedard and Fantilli who people knew since last world juniors wouldn't be coming back, even throw in Wright there (even though he's an AHL player right now) if Canada had Benson, Korchinski and Luneau that would make them a heavy heavy favorite. They got hit harder than a typical year with unavailable players in terms of relative to expectation and as far as the overall makeup of the age group goes. Still have 3 1st round picks on Defense but I dunno if there's a superstar amongst them.
