Red Sox/MLB 2024 Spring Training Part 4: - Ownership seems content with another last place finish in 2024

Are some folks really excited about this bullshit PR move? Who the f*** cares about them hiring an executive when the entire roster top to bottom f***ing blows? It was a last place roster last year and they've only gotten worse. No f***ing front office hire will fix that shit show as long as they refuse to sign and pay for actual talent.

The "reports" that Theo was brought in to focus on the roster is laughable given they told Breslow he'd be able to spend money to improve it, yet they didn't allow it. This is 100% PR spin and reason 5 million why this ownership group blows.
What are your thoughts on our chances next season?

I'd say they're probably about a .500 team. If a few things break their way, they could make a run at 87+ wins and a playoff spot. Probably about an equal chance things go south and they end up winning 70-75 games.

Can’t say bringing Theo into the mix doesn’t excite me a little bit, regardless of his “title”.

I mean between he and Breslow, at least they have 2 guys who, at least have an understanding of how the average fan feels about the organization.

From Boston Globe when Breslow hired

▪ Perhaps the best news about Breslow is that Theo Epstein’s fingerprints are all over this important Red Sox hire.
Theo is the one who first brought Breslow to the Red Sox in 2006. Breslow pitched in 88 games at Pawtucket over two seasons and got into 13 with the Sox before Epstein let him go on waivers during spring training 2008. Breslow returned in 2012 and was part of the 2013 World Series winners.
While Breslow continued his 12-year big league career, Theo moved on to Chicago, enhancing his Hall of Fame résumé by winning another curse-busting World Series with the Cubs in 2016. All the while, Theo never forgot about his fellow Yale prodigy

After Breslow’s final season, a year in the minors in 2018, Epstein’s Cubs were among the many teams to pursue him for a front office position. The Cubs were having problems developing pitching. Impressed with Breslow’s brilliance, integrity, and relentlessness, Epstein identified him as a person who could fix things.

Breslow was living in Newton, looking for a challenge in baseball, and had spoken with then-Sox baseball boss Dave Dombrowski. It turned out that Breslow wanted too much and was perhaps too analytical for the old-school Dombrowski, who won a World Series with the Sox in ‘18 but was fired by John Henry the following year.
Epstein feared the Cubs were falling behind other organizations in the ever-evolving area of pitching development. Theo went after Breslow, but it was not an easy hire. Breslow had more questions for the Cubs than the Cubs had for him.
They turned out to be a better fit than the Red Sox. Within a year, the Cubs turned over their entire minor league pitching operation to Breslow. When Epstein left the Cubs after the 2020 season, Jed Hoyer took over and made Breslow assistant general manager.

Theo to Dan Shaughnessy a few months ago on his reaction to the Red Sox hiring Breslow……..hmmmm

Epstein on Breslow: “Craig is one of the most impressive and impactful baseball people I’ve ever met. He combines a powerful intellect and deep pitching expertise with a real understanding of players and fearless approach to problem solving. With his mind, work ethic, and character, there is no limit to what he can accomplish in this game.”

Last place. They were a terrible team last season and have actually gotten worse this off season, while the rest of the AL has gotten better.
I got them last in division but I would say Tampa definitely took a big hit but are still better than Sox and Toronto about same - Guerrero needs to be 22 version

I don’t see Orioles winning over 101 but talent wise they are better and I’d expect them winning at least 1 playoff game

I'd agree and say they're basically in the same place they were the last few years. I'd peg them at 82 wins as a baseline, plus or minus 8 games as a standard deviation. If absolutely everything goes right and the pitchers catch lightning in a bottle, etc., they could overshoot that mark and fight for a WC. If people get hurt, pitchers flop like they did last year, then they'll falter.

I know in the end you are what your record says you are, as Bill Parcells would say, but even though on talent I'd project them at .500, they're not actually finishing at 81 wins because if they're out of the race in August, they're going to give up the last 6 weeks like they did last year, vets will be checked out or traded, they'll bring up rookies to get some experience making mistakes and losing meaningless games in September. If they're in the hunt in August, they're going to add at the deadline and finish better. So even though they're a .500 team, they're not going to be .500 either way, if that makes sense.

And of course given the track record of the last half-decade, I'm leaning toward the pessimistic end of things, but not altogether ruling out any Bailey-Breslow magic with the pitching staff.

I was at unassisted triple play game

I think it was a Friday and I was with 4 or 5 guys from work

We went to the Ratskeller before game for cheap beer because it was raining a bit

The Rat was a legendary dive in Kenmore and great bands played there

We were in good seats in grand stands a little past first base

When the Mariners guy hit into triple play I asked my buddy Mike, “did he just hit into a triple play ?” Because Valentin was so nonchalant and I probably had 3 or 4 beers in me. Mike said “no, I think there was one out”

Well it was (RIP Mike you were way to young)

Also A- Rods first mlb game

Sox won by a run and all 3 outs by Mariners were web gems by Sox

Not sure if Billy Hatcher or Troy O’Leary but the RF robbed I believe Reggie Jefferson of a home run in top of 9th

By end of game we were front row on deck of Seattle

Those were the days

The bolded part is exactly what is going to happen. This team is going to go into full rebuild mode.......ownership just isn't fessing up about it yet. Now that Theo is involved, I'm more sure of it than ever. If they are 10+ games out by July (and they will be) this roster is gonna get torn down to the studs.

Its going to be a fire sale come August, and I'll wager anyone out there that Devers is gone before the season ends....
