Red Sox/MLB 2024 Spring Training Part 4: - Ownership seems content with another last place finish in 2024

ESPN just put out their MLB Farm System Rankings and listed the Red Sox at #13.

Last Season Rank: 14th

Top 100 prospects: 3

Ownership has made it clear that the Red Sox are purely a business and that going above the CBT line is not part of their business plan. That means the farm system will be counted on more than in recent years with the success of the scouting and development group providing reasons for optimism: Triston Casas, Brayan Bello and Jarren Duran look like core players among recent prospect graduates (you might include a few more players) and there should be a couple more coming from the group of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel and Ceddanne Rafaela.

Right now on the major league roster, only Rafael Devers is projected for 3+ WAR though, and the second-best projection belongs to a player with 0.1 career WAR in Vaughn Grissom. I don't know exactly how this puzzle gets solved, but I'm not blaming the scouts and coaches.

“So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”…years from now.

If you say so.
He’s a smart, brilliant guy. He’s been angling for cut of ownership from a team since he left. Now he got it, and will oversee the company, not scout baseball games Sox ownership figured right that it would be viewed as a Sox baseball thing

Orioles are 1, Yankees 6 and Rays 7 so probably not

You just make this up as you go don’t ya?

Baseball America has the Yankees ranked ahead of the Red Sox? Great stuff.

This narrative of them having a great farm and just have to be patiently waiting for those prospects to arrive is a hoax. It's a typical excuse of a struggling franchise (well, and fans who want to cling their hopes onto something).
It's actually an insult that they are kind of punting this and probably the next season with the excuse that the top prospects will be ready by then. But these guys are nowhere near talented enough to make that kind of promise. We are not talking about elite prospects such as A-Rod, Harper or Rutschman.

Considering the circumstances that they basically hoarded prospects for 4 years, this result is rather unimpressive. The farm really does not have extraordinary quantity, is not exactly top heavy (no top 10 prospect) and frankly lacks elite pitching prospects.

The Yankees have been going for it non stop and were still able to not miss a beat on their farm. That way they have a steady influx of prospects they can trade for established players if need be. Same as the Dodgers over many years.

This goes to show that it's not a law of nature that winning and having a bad farm must go hand in hand.

All Red Sox fans need to finally wake up and realize that this has gone into the wrong direction for many, many years. Probably since Dombrowski left. This goes way beyond not being willing to spend. Of all the issues this franchise has had for the last 4-5 years, "not excessively spending" wouldn't be anywhere near at the top of my list.

I don’t think the ownership has issues. Seems they are doing exactly what they want.
Have a cash cow

Not really. He would be running the Mets if the owner gave him a stake in the team. He held out for a stake in ownership, FSG gave it to him. He's been out of the league for three years, all those openings and nobody wanted to hire him?

I am the biggest Kiley McDaniel fan as a person - phenomenal, run for President- pretty good on baseball but I’ll take Callis/Mayo

That said the Sox don’t have the pitching to run with the big dogs

They need to nail all three of Mayer, Anthony, and Teal.

The orioles farm system is spectacular- they got stud prospects backing stud prospects.

The Orioles are set up to be baseballs version of the 79 Edmonton Oilers and looks like this new owner is into trophies

They got a beautiful park a great manager, their scouting director is considered one of if not the best

Im so happy for them - I grew up rooting for the Red Sox but those Orioles were magic - Brooks & Frank Robinson, Paul Blair, Palmer, Cuellar, and McNally.

I remember getting a Brooks Robinson glove and sleeping with it all summer - unfortunately I fielded more like Devers

The other news is Theo coming in - clearly he’s going to be the next owner of the Red Sox when Henry leaves us under the FSG umbrella (hey Theo is a Bruins fan so at least he knows what a puck is)

MLB network guys say he’s expected to be working with Craig Breslow who’s a fellow Yale alumni and Cubs FO guy I believe hired by Theo/Hoyer and of course Red Sox player

I hope to Christ Theo gets in John Henry's ear and gets him to wake up to the new reality of the AL East so he can actually spend money.
lol yes

Theo is a psycho and I’ve had more then one person tell me Theo end game will be point person on owner of this team. This is his baby and gotta think where he’s headed

here’s my assessment of AL East

Baltimore - loaded and future is phenomenal. 95 + wins

Yankees - they love a good fight and have a strong farm system and with Judge & Soto must watch - Cy Young winner 90 + (100 would not surprise me)

Tampa - they still have the guys coming like SS Junior Caminero who’s top 2-5 overall and have another SS prospect in top 50. Wander Franco is a killer but they are resilient

Issac Parades picked up for Austin Meadows shows how brilliant they are

No one should deal with them or count them out but they just don’t have financial resources others do (in a salary cap they would be monsters) I hate them

85+

Toronto

If Guerrero shows up in shape and teams up with Bichette they can drive team. Springer regressed and Kiermaier has seen best days - I love Varsho and their catching room. Is JT going to see time at third. Pitching is good not great after top two

83+

Red Sox

77

Add Montgomery & move Houck & Whitlock to pen and deal Jansen

Sign Right power bat Duvall

They do that they jump to 85 +

Theo let’s go !!!!

It helps that they had a top 5 pick in 4 consecutive MLB Drafts:

2019 - Adley Rutschman ( 1st overall )
2020 - Heston Kjerstad ( 2nd overall )
2021 - Colton Cowser ( 5th overall )
2022 - Jackson Holliday ( 1st overall )

Was thinking about something earlier and I have no idea: how is their payroll even as high as it is? Who the f*** is even on this team that makes a lot after Devers?

Story? Okay, where the f*** is the rest of the money going? They don't have anyone!

It’s a fair question lol

Yoshida and Giolito get a nice chunk. Martin and Jansen get good chunks for relievers

Not getting a lot of bang for their buck overall

STORY HAS FOUR f***ING YEARS LEFT!!!!!
6/140 was considered a value play at the time too. Funny thing about baseball! It’s never not a MF

I will say I do think he can be worth ~3 WAR and if he does that he’s worth it. He’ll obviously need to hit better but even with the rough return from injury at the dish mid season his defense and base running almost got him to 1.0 WAR in 43 games. Possibly a .500 team with him instead of Hernandez at SS for all of last year. Glorious, glorious .500
