Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of prominent North American sports owners led by the Red Sox’ parent company Fenway Sports Group, is closing in on an investment that could approach $3 billion, according to a source close to the negotiations.

But the can't afford to add payroll to the Red Sox. Henry sell the team plz !!!!!!

This might legitimately be the worst thing to happen to the Red Sox this winter.

Rubenstein is a 75 year old billionaire from Baltimore. He's about to pump so much money into that team to try and win a ring, this might be the worst news of an already bad offseason.

I have one distinct memory of Jimy Williams

Back in 1988, I was producing a baseball show that aired locally on Boston area cable. One night our host interviewed Jimy when he was managing the Jays and since Toronto played all their home games on Astroturf he asked Williams 'How does your team play on grass?' and he answered ' None of my players use grass'.

I am the cameraman and I knew what I had was gold. I left Fenway and went back to Somerville to make a copy and then drove to Allston and gave the tape to Lobel knowing he was doing Sports Spotlight that night and he used it.

A week later I am half asleep watching Letterman and Marv Albert comes on with his sports bloopers and the Williams clip appears. :biglaugh:
Lobel aired the clip again in 1995

They raised ticket prices all while knowing they had no intention of doing anything of significance after another last place finish. That’s a special kind of screw you from John henry.

The Red Sox are a tourist attraction and the "Fenway experience" brings in a lot of out-of-towners, as evidenced by the hordes of away fans who came last summer(Mets, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Astros, etc.). There are also plenty of locals who like to spend an afternoon or evening at the Lyric Little Bandbox, regardless of the anonymous product on the field. FSG has enough headaches, the Klopp announcement, the Penguins struggling to reach wild card position, a NASCAR team(NASCAR was big once), golf investments, real and virtual, and a possible pursuit of an NBA franchise in Vegas(over to you, LeBron!)..

The Red Sox even have Peter Gammons depressed. If my kids ever ask me if we can go to Fenway I'm gonna have a difficult time controlling my laughter.

I saw that - just wow

I’ve been asked why do you think they are doing this ?

No idea but some possible answers

1. They hate Boras and won’t overpay or play the game for his guys

2. They want to see what the Casas, Vaughn, Rafaella, Duran, Bello, Crawford, Anthony, Teal, Mayer etc become

3. They hate the fans - they consider them ungrateful ingrates. ‘I gave them 4 WS and all they do is complain- nothing is good enough for them. F them’

Henry mindset

4. He doesn’t care all that much - he’s into soccer in Europe and golf - different fans and crowds and far away from Boston

Whatever it is Henry doesn’t seem to care

Real or imagined but perception is reality here

FWIW, I have less of an issue with not bringing back Turner than some of the other decisions (...or non-decisions) they've made this winter.

They need to improve defensively, and if you've got Turner taking most of the ABs at DH, then that means Yoshida has to play the field. Bring back someone like Duvall and while he won't give you the same impact at the plate, O'Neill, Duvall, Abreu, and Refsnyder are all average to well above average defensive outfielders.

Give me a full season of Trevor Story at SS and if Grissom can hold his own at 2B, I think there's a chance they could be dramatically improved defensively.

Because money.

The Red Sox are nothing more than a line item on the balance sheets to FSG. Another holding in their portfolio, that simple and cold. They only care if the asset makes money or loses money.

Similar thing happened to the Braves with the AOL-Time Warner merger. They went from Ted Turner who was Jerry Jones level in his pursuit and spending to win to a line item to a corporation.

There really seems to be a concerted effort amongst owners to break Scott Boras this year. That and the fact this years clients don't seem worth gigantic contracts

But they'll be selling the "Fenway experience" to the ever faithful fans this season. Has me all excited.

There's no good reason not to expect a full season from Trevor Story.

He was extremely durable in Colorado, and he successfully recovered from elbow surgery at the end of last season.
That was almost 4 years ago with Colorado. He recovered from elbow surgery last year but with what we saw I will be damned to call it a "success".
