I don't hate it, he played QB in the league for a decade and has experience with being a QB coach.

This team has so many holes on the roster from a talent perspective that I really don't think whoever the coordinators are really matters.

An OC who didn't call the plays was not really an OC. Calling plays is half the job!
Have to admit, when I heard we got Van Pelt I was assuming he did call plays previously. Sad!

I don't know what this means but the head coaching hires have been slanted to defensive guys this cycle:

Mayo
Pierce
Macdonald
Quinn
Morris

I guess I'd have to do some digging to see who these guys have as OCs now.

I know that Raiders just hired Kliff Kingsbury as their OC.

My take. This probably leads to them running a west coast offense. You know who was pegged by every draft site as perfect QB for the west coast?

Mac Jones. My prediction. Harrison at 3. Tackle at 34. Jacoby Brisset signed as free agent to back up Mac. They run it back with Mac one more time.

Definitely didn’t expect the Patriots to hire Alex Van Pelt as their OC. I remember watching him play his college ball at Pitt (I feel old). He’s a pretty smart guy. A “football guy” and I think a solid hire if not a spectacular one. Definitely an improvement.

I’m willing to give Van Pelt the benefit of the doubt, and I like that the Patriots brought someone in from the outside.

I like all of this except for trying again with Mac. I think Mac needs a change of scenery for his own good and a fresh start.

At least this guy isn‘t a first time coach at the position Like the rest of the staff. Considering nobody seemed to want the job I think this guy is fine.
Some here are never pleased. They live to whine. I swear Felger & Mazz are posters here using undercover aliases.

I’m fine with the hire. Considering the Browns QB situation this season and they still had good QB play and made the playoffs, with Flacco. Wolff worked with him in Green Bay?

How many of the Shanahan and McVay tree guys that everyone wants had ever called plays before becoming head coach?

Baker Mayfield went 21/34, 263 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in the one game Van Pelt actually called plays in. The offense had 5 total touchdowns.

Daniel Jeremiah who's pretty plugged in on what teams are thinking with the draft said he would be stunned if they don't take a qb at 3. They aren't building the offense around giving Mac one more chance. Someone like Brissett might be brought in but it will be the mentor the rookie.

You could've just said "yup I stepped in it by calling his Jets tenure a joke", or simply walked away. Either one would've worked. Doubling down probably wasn't the way to go, but congrats on that I guess. If 2 AFC championships with a team that really struggled before he got there is a joke, then Bill sans Brady is the ultimate punch line.

>thinks I'm defending Belichick's tenure without Brady

lol

lmao even

The only joke here is your argument that Rex Ryan was a decent head coach with the Jets and the Bills. The difference between Belichick's final years in New England vs Ryan's tenure with the Jets is that Belichick was at the end of his rope just like Tom Landry was in Dallas while Ryan was at the ceiling of what he could do as a coach. When the going got tough, Rex caved like a house of cards. Belichick's biggest mistake was always his stubbornness getting in the way of making the right decision and sabotaging himself as a GM. Even as much as I wanted Bill fired, I have to admit the fact he was able to rebuild the defense to be as strong as it was stands as a testament to his ability to get the most out of players on the defensive side of the ball. Rex always needed high end talent to bail him out on both sides of the ball to be halfway competitive.

I'm not going to even bother arguing Cleveland because that's ancient history and a completely different league, arguably a better one that was more competitive and a higher standard of play to the way it is now. And while there are behaviors that Bill carried over from his Cleveland days once Brady left for Tampa Bay, which I have pointed out mind you, he still built a competitive team before the wheels fell off thanks to his meddling.

At least the team actually has coordinators now. Covington is a great hire for the defense. Springer is only marginally better than Achord based on record but I will give him some botd. Know very little about Van Pelt so I will wait and see how he puts his game plan into action.

I don't think you can really nail the first post BB staff either.

Bill got so many wins because his opponent was an absolute clown that beat himself. Especially when we played his disciples. But some of the decisions and leadership from the other sideline was keystone cops pretty regularly teams just beat themselves all the time.

Anywayss we aren't gonna outcoach the rest of the league. These hires are pretty solid 5 irons into the fairway. Please stash a guy like McCarthy sign Cousins or Wilson and draft MHJ no rookie messiah QB please. None of these 3 dudes are it let them play for the Commanders or something.

Maybe reading too much into this but I feel like them picking an OC with so much experience coaching QBs almost guarantees they go QB at 3

So here's the thing with Van Pelt. Looking back at the QBs he's coached, since that's basically been his primary job for the last 15 years, they often have a bump in year 1 (great!) and then get worse in subsequent years (not great!). The fact that it's happened at five teams makes it a worrying trend.

There's a reason all of the comments about him are about how experienced he is, how he's great for culture, and how he's got a versatile system. It's because when you look at the actual results, they're not good. From looking at his QB development history, this is making me think the last thing they should do is take a QB at #3.

Cowards if they take one of these overrated QBs and pass on Marvin. Playmakers are more rare than competent QBs this year showed you don't need an elite guy the higher end mid tier dudes did well and then you have Flacco showing up etc. Purdy was the last dude drafted.

We had a decent WR record prior to BB.

Vincent Brisby very servicable same class as Drew.
Shawn Jefferson was good for us and obviously his sons best WR in the league
Terry Glenn headed to the HOF and better than any other WRs for a minute.

I'm with you Brad. They NEED a MHJ. Go QB in the later rounds. Sign a vet. Let the rook sit a learn and build your offense out.
