My addition:
TBL goes deep in the playoffs, neutering Chicago's second pick in the first round.

I'm also not convinced that we wouldn't just want the 11th pick this year rather than the unprotected. Bird in the hand and all, plus a shot at an upside D at 11OA. Sure if they trade Crosby and Guentzel, and Letang and Malkin retire, they'll be a bottom 5 team, but they also probably shouldn't be as bad as they are this year.
nice.

The point of this was to kinda keep track of the different things we should be hoping for. The Sharks getting the #1 pick isn't the only factor to pay attention to

Yeah, I really like both of those teams as potential offersheet targets in ~2-3 years. I really think up and coming teams should take advantage of the offersheet mechanic. Or obviously as a discounted trade target.
That could be good, timing-wise. It seems to me you have to do it at a point where you're confident you're not going to be sacrificing too high of first round picks, so if you have the base of young guys in place (and cheap) and they're on the rise, then you add a very good player on an offer sheet, nice. But there is certainly some risk in doing it too soon.

Also, we probably shouldn't kid ourselves. It's the NHL--what manager out there actually does this?? (Not enough, that's for sure!)

Non Sharks draftee: Michkov with all the hypes before the draft, is just average. While Will Smith and Leonard are doing better than Michkov.

So for the record, I'm delighted with Smith, but to call Michkov "average" with those numbers in the KHL is hard to take seriously. That' not average at all.

Yep, I would say KHL is still probably the closest to NHL points comparison. So Michkov would have a pretty good rookie seasoni if he was playing in NHL right now.

I wouldn't, have you seen who the top players are in the KHL? Goldobin is tied for 2nd in league scoring, that should tell you something about how that league has fallen in recent years.

What a cruddy pick Svoboda was...
Lol if people are already complaining about a 3rd round pick when literally every other player we drafted last year is outperforming reasonable expectations, we are in for a LONG ten years or whatever this rebuild ends up taking.

The D+1 performance of the players we drafted last year is a pretty extreme outlier and I would bet a lot of money that not only will some of them regress next season (at least in terms of production) but we will not get similar D+1 performances out of our 2024 class.

McDavid is 27 and they were bad for numerous years. Outside of getting lucky in the draft, it's super important the GM makes the right moves at the right time.

Otherwise you end up with horrible contracts like Neal, Lucic, Nurse, Kasian, Campbell, etc etc. (I'm watching the oilers game right now 🙂)

This is my concern. Look at those horrible contracts Pat Verbeek gave out.
I think theres a general disconnect between fans view of bad contracts and GMs. Friedman has mentioned, and i tend to agree, that having veteran players on a young team is very important to learning how to be professional and adapt to the game. Now just spitballing but are guys like Gudas and Killorn worth their contracts? No. Is it really impacting Anahiem's ability to compete? Also no. They will long be expired by the time that their young guys need new deals. And TBH they probably need to overpay to get guys there since they know they wont be a cup contender. If im signing for cheap, why not sign for 1m with a team like Toronto or Colorado.

I think this is why i dont view any of Griers deals as "bad contracts" since he's getting vets in to help the younger guys for a few years. The only truly bad deal we have is Vlasic's since hes also highly unlikely to be a positive vet presence.

If all we did was play young guys, sure it's more "fun" as fans because of the unknowns about prospects, but even if theyre GOOD-GREAT prospects thats how you end up as a Buffalo or pre McDavid Edmonton. Always young, always loads of potential, but also never a playoff team.

I agree that the 100% tear down is bad. I'm not contrasting this with GMMG. Anaheim and other teams like the Oilers who gave out awful contracts the moment they were signed should be warnings.

However, there is a difference between Vets and legit bad contracts. They had Silfverberg (33), Carrick (32), Lyubushkin (29), Strome (30), McGinn (30), Henrique (32), Fowler (32), and Gibson (30) on the team at the start of the season. All of those players are 'fine' vets. Gudas and Killorn were awful signings day 1 plus the head scratching Ross Johnson waiver claim. Johnson with 2+ more after this year.

Side note, kinda wild that we don't have our own 3rd/4th/5th/6th round picks this year.

some posters here just think every vet signing is a bad one cause it blocks a younger guy.

But i also dont hate the Gudas/Killorn deals. Gudas especially since outside of Fowler that D looks like ours so more vets back there helps. Killorn is overpaid but again both of them expire early.

Johnson is a goon and is paid like a 4th liner. Nothing spectatular. He makes slightly more than vet min. Good guy to keep around IMO.

Oh I understand how the draft works. Still doesn't change the fact he was a bad pick on draft day (and we even traded UP for him) and he's progressing very badly in a low level league.

Would you also describe the CHL as a low level league? Because there's no difference in quality between it and the USHL where Svoboda is playing.

He was a 3rd round pick. What are you even expecting? All the scouting geniuses on here wanted 5'9 160lb winger Jayden Perron who currently has 15 points in 33 games for North Dakota.

It's tradition around here to get zero value outta that 3rd rounder. Greiss in 2004 is the only NHL'er drafted from that spot in Sharks history haha

I'm no Michkov truther, but he's playing two leagues above the NCAA.

Yep, I would say KHL is still probably the closest to NHL points comparison. So Michkov would have a pretty good rookie seasoni if he was playing in NHL right now.
I think it's fair to say that, for the most part, the talent on KHL teams is not NHL level.
I would KHL teams consider a quality AHL level starter to be good enough to be a starter (suggesting that KHL is about on the AHL's level), would Michkov be given a backup job, or would something else happen entirely?
Here is my rankings of the different hockey leagues:

1. NHL
2. SHL
2.5 AHL
2.6. KHL
3. NCAA
4. WHL
5. MHL
6. QMJHL

Michkov was touted to be 2nd overall in the last draft except NHL teams didn't believe in him and he has KHL contract baggage so he falls to #7th. I know it's early, but it starting to show that he just had 1 exceptional year for MHL (20-21) where he scored 35 goals. I would expect him to be a barn-burner in a lower league like the KHL. He has all the tools to be a NHL superstar but his motivations might be in question. Look at his career stats, he is just AVERAGE. Before stating the obvious "KHL has superstars" it's worth remembering but there's very little parity in the K for teams outside of Moscow and apparently Magnitogorsk.

What about his career stats shows that he's average? Playing for Sochi is not like playing for Moscow or Magnitogorsk. By your standard, Kaprizov was also just average because they're doing similarly at similar ages.

The KHL used to be significantly better than it is now. Michkov is still a special prospect but the fall of the KHL has been well-documented.

I think the AHL is the second best hockey league in the world now.

They are not similar in stats. Kaprizov's significantly better stats than Michkov in the KHL. See below. That's being said. It's still early for Michkov to turn this thing around. But is Michkov worth going 2nd overall? That's my main question. Kaprizov was a 5th rounder@ #135.
