Top 2 of this draft looks great, Demidov and Levshunov also look pretty good.

Thankfully we’re all but guaranteed to get one of them.

Obviously hopefully it’s Celebrini, but Eiserman isn’t a slouch either.

Misa next year would be awesome too.

Guaranteed?? There’s over 70 games left.
We are arguably the worst team in NHL history. It should be clear that we don't have a single defenseman who would start on any playoff-bound team. Our forward group is three-quarters composed of has-beens and never-weres, and probably half of today's starters belong in the AHL (Carpenter, Hoffman, Kunin, Smith, probably Zetterlund and Zadina).

It would take a miracle for this team to finish 31st. We're probably going to finish ten points below 31st.

Our third season, we started 0-8-1, identical to our record now. We made the playoffs for the first time.
You can hem and haw about this player and that player but there is way too much left in the season.

No. Another 10.5 seasons, 11 years later Thornton would join the team. 3 years after that year Thornton would be drafted into the NHL.
That was a special year though. So much was new. New coach, ton of new players, new arena which was packed the whole time. They figured it out and caught lightning in a bottle. My first game ever was a win against the ducks that October (was the 2nd win of year) and it was electric.

That isnt going to happen this year.

The flip side is we are tied for 10th longest winless streak to start a season. Get it to 11 and we are tied for 2nd longest.

I do think that folks are overestimating how bad this team is by ignoring the loss of Couture. Couture is still a 2nd line center, he obviously won't make the team good but his presence should win us a game or two.
Team is averaging losing by almost 3 goals/game.

Couture is also the captain of a team that has finished 8th, 7th, 6th, 7th in the division. How is he going to handle this team and new guys who know they arent part of a long term solution.

You could be right, but it also seems like a perfect storm waiting to happen, as if it could get worse.

Logan Couture doesn't move the needle on this team

We're currently scoring 1 goal a game, that's the 2nd worst offense in league history if it holds, adding a 70 point center won't stop a historically bad team from being a bottom feeder, it probably isn't even enough to push us to challenge for 31st place

According to Vegas, we are expected to finish with 60 points, dead last. The next closest team is the ducks, with 69 points
We had the least amount of wins in the league last year and are most definitely a worse team this year with the departures of Karlsson and Meier.

This team will easily finish bottom 3, if not dead last by a decent margin.

How does Misa and Hagens compare to Celebrini and Eiserman?

Yes, Logan moves the needle. Does he move the needle away from this team being last? No, I agree with you there. But he moves the needle away from this team being historically bad.

Granlund actually gave some spark tonight. We were in the game until the final 5 minutes. We held a lead through 2 periods. It wasn't a blowout. Add a Captain/veteran/respected 2-way centerman, and we are going to win some games.

Let me be clear: this start definitely sets the table for a clear last place finish. Which is what we want! But I also agree that people are overstating how bad we are. It might be fun to say things like "we probably won't win a game all year" and "this is the worst team in history" but it's simply not likely to be true once we have 2 of our top 6 back (Granlund and Couture).

I think it's really hard for anyone to know this early on. People seem to think Misa may be a very, very strong 1OA but there's so much time before he's drafted... over 10% of his entire life until he's drafted. And anyway, because of the lottery system, we're really just hoping that we hit in the top 3. I think we all know this, but it seems necessary to keep saying it as folks get a little too attached to one prospect or the other.

Did we have Thornton by chance?
Years before his arrival. We did have 2 legendary Russian players in Larionov and Makarov. Also, a little Latvian by the name of Arturs Irbe. We beat the vaunted Detroit team and took Toronto to 7 games. It was incredible.
No reason it couldn’t happen again. It doesn’t matter what Vegas or pundits say.

Misa broke a ton of OHL records last season, but I haven't been too impressed yet in the minimal time that I've seen him. Still early, but he kinda reminds me of Heatley in the sense that his skating mechanics seem a little clunky and a lot of his goals are garbage clean-up goals. Doesn't really generate plays out of nothing like Bedard or Celebrini.

Couture's return won't prevent us from being historically bad because he no longer drives play at an elite level, he's a 60-70 point top-6 center who plays responsible defense, he's not going to turn anyone else on the roster into a legitimate scoring threat and without a Meier or Karlsson to drive play for him his counting stats will also regress

No reason it couldn’t happen again.
As noted, there are plenty of reasons why it couldn't happen again

I'm all for optimism, but there has to be some level of realism. That team had a lot more talent than the current one. With the exception of today, and the game against Colorado (and that was only because of Blackwood), the Sharks haven't been in any of their games. If the Sharks develop a scrappy defensive minded approach and just compete harder than everyone else, then sure, they might have a higher than 0% chance of making the playoffs.

Granlund isn't a good player - he's a middle-six complementary winger on the downslide of his career - he's not going to move the needle this season and by the end of the year is more likely to be deserving of being waived (he won't be, but that's a different matter) than deserving of top-six minutes.

Couture is a top-six complementary center who is also on the downslide of his career, but who was a much better player at his peak and so has much further to fall. He doesn't drive play, he needs a good play driver on his wing, but right now we have maybe three play drivers in Hertl, maybe Eklund, and maybe Barabanov, but the latter two are a prospect (albeit an excellent one) and an older and now injured complementary winger who himself needs someone strong to help him create space.

These guys aren't going to make this team much better. Of course we will win some games, but that will be due to luck, not due to our own skill, because we are entirely and utterly bereft of breakout ability.

We're over 10% of the way through the season and on average we're outshot by over 13 shots a game

This isn't an NHL caliber roster, we're not in any danger of spoiling the tank, even teams that decide to sell at the deadline won't be able to catch us because we'll have such a huge head start

Sharks are on a 9 point pace. For the whole season.
